Nice Views of the Willamette River

We had a reasonably good experience at the Avalon--but, nothing to write home about. The staff was nice and very efficient. The views of the Willamette River (river-side rooms) were very pleasant. Our room was nice and quiet. To the negative, we arrived a bit after 4 p.m. and our room was not ready. The carpet in the 5th floor hallway is stained and dirty. The hotel offers no free parking ($19 for overnight valet). The location was a good distance from downtown and is a 10 minute walk to the nearest streetcar pickup location. There was nothing terrible about this hotel ... It just didn't seem worth the price we paid.

Quiet rooms, nice beds, difficult to find

The beds were awesome and their complimentary breakfast is set up on each floor, so you just have to shuffle down near the elevator and get breakfast. I liked that. But it was difficult to find and valet parking is annoying. They charge $19 to valet park (only parking option) and I could see my car from the lobby 20 feet away. It's a lame add-on charge.

Great last minute deal

A classy if out-of-the-way hotel with comfortable rooms and a very good associated restaurant next door on the banks of the Willamette River. The hotel is not walking distance from downtown so be prepared to drive if you're interested in seeing this lovely city.

needs some balance. great facility

The hotel staff at the front desk chided us for not using the valet parking which was $20.00 per night. The parkers were never available when we arrived so we parked our own car and still paid. The front desk person almost scoffed when I asked where I could obtain a soft drink and pointed me in the direction of the restaurant across the street. Room service took an hour. Two hamburgers, 2 choc. chip cookies and fries cost almost $80 with tip, and the burgers were raw and salty, the cookies were raw, and there was no ketchup. The server said he would be right back with the ketchup and we waited another half hour before I had to call, and was told he wasn't coming back. I complained and he came back and they ultimately refunded $30.00 but the whole meal was horrid. The room service staff and manager were courteous though.

The interurban train is wonderful and will take you anywhere downtown you need to go. The hotel offered a shuttle, but we had a car. You are only 1 hour and a half from Mt. Hood or the beach and the Art Museum is incredible.

pleasant city stay

Very efficient and friendly staff; the valets are right at hand when you arrive to help you unpack and take your car. Desk staff very informative. The Avalon is very peaceful, quiet and a welcome haven for the weary business traveler. The breakfast laid out near the elevators on each floor makes it convenient to run grab fresh juice and coffee in your bathrobe. The gym is very nice!

Nice hotel with a great view!

Very nice hotel. Great view of the river off your balcony. Get a river view room. Disliked valet only parking at $19/night. They have a towncar to take you to downtown and back that is complimentary.

Too much Hype

This hotel was nice, though not as nice as the marketing suggested. It smelled wonderful which I appreciated and the staff was very friendly and helpful. I LOVE what they're doing to be environmentally conscious and responsible. Having the river behind the building is really great, I wish I would've had time to enjoy it more. I booked a small room, but it was much smaller/cramped than I expected and not nearly as bright and aesthetically pleasing as I hoped. I knew the view I had picked wouldn't be amazing, but it didn't show much 'hill', mostly the building next door instead. The Salon, which was what finally led me to choose this place, didn't offer Reiki as advertised and it was difficult to discover what techniques they actually do offer. There was no menu for it listed in my room notebook. Room Service menu is very limited. Continental breakfast was dissapointing, I've had much better at 2 star establishments. The sink/counter in bathroom was beautiful, but the shower was cheap looking in comparison. This won't be my first choice next time.
