Caters to Parties, Not to Guests
Visitor to Portland Dec 18, 2009
The hotel is lovely. The lobby inviting. Unfortunately the lobby is rented out to outside parties, and hotel guests are ... not able to enjoy the space. I had looked forward to a glass of wine and time with my book while relaxing near the fireplace and Christmas tree. However, on two of the three nights we were at the hotel, I wasn't able to do this. One night the party was quite large, and upon returning to the hotel we had to squeeze through the guests in order to get from the entrance to the elevator to our room. Between the conversations and the live music, the noise was loud and intrusive. The party continued on our floor (the 12th), the revelers having no regard for those of us trying to enjoy rest and silence in our rooms. We called the front desk and complained, but there were no results to our call. I have no other complaints at all. Staying downtown within walking distance of shops, theaters, and restaurants was quite nice. Our car stayed parked most of the time we were in Portland. However, I will now make sure not to stay at hotels that cater to outside parties as the hotel guests are made a secondary priority and the ambiance that draws visitors in the first place is compromised. We enjoyed good dinners at Ping, just inside the gate to Chinatown, and Bo Restobar across the street from the Benson. The Portland Street Car is a great mode of public transportation. 23rd St. has nice shops and restaurants and can be gotten to via the street car.

Lovely Downtown Hotel
Not 2 Bad Chad Dec 1, 2009
Wonderful old hotel with all the modern conveniences. Free wifi and cable access for our laptop. Complimentary robes and ... slippers. Coffee maker in the room. The room itself was nice, although although not fabulous, with modern appointments and muted tones (black and beige). Let me say that I judge a hotel by its level of service and the complimentary conveniences provided. I was a little surprised that a Best Western or Clarion hotel would provide a complimentary continental breakfast, yet this three-star hotel does not. Nice location for someone who wants to be near downtown and doesn't mind paying a premium.

Best location going if you want to be near the city center in a nice bed. Cheaper rooms are on the air shaft, but those ... tempur-pedic mattresses are warm and extremely comfortable. If you know your way around downtown and are street-smart, it's a perfect place for those who love the night life. I wouldn't recommend the Benson for the elderly or those who move only from suv to climate-controlled room and back their entire lives.

The room was clean and well-kept. The bed was the *most* comfortable hotel bed I have *ever* slept in!. The coffee pot was ... cracked when I arrived; they replaced the entire coffee maker immediately. The free wireless Internet worked well once I removed an issue with my computer (my fault; fixed with help from friendly tech support). In all I would recommend this hotel.

They ... started cleaning rooms and making lots of noise in the hallways, even come in your room if you don't have the dnd sign out, way before check out time. Not nice. Benson Hotel, Portland
Pete Sep 14, 2009
Service was excellent, and the fact that all of the people were experienced, professional and knowledgable really was ... evident. The hotel is old with fairly small windows and small bathrooms, but at this rate was a real bargain. Only complaint was that it could be noisy from the hall (there was a wedding party) and from the single pane window on Broadway.

A worry free night at the Benson
AJsmom Sep 8, 2009
The location is wonderful. It's very family friendly, too. Room service variety was good. Overnight parking is $30, which ... is more than we were expecting, but you do get in/out privileges which was nice. Walking distance to Powell's, the Saturday Market. The beds were awesome and the customer service couldn't be better. We were there over the weekend so there were city noises that woke us up (people leaving bars at closing time, cars honking late at night). We'll just ask for something higher than the 5th floor next time. We can't wait to stay again.

A gorgeous, century-old hotel that has been impeccably maintained. Everything (bed, furniture, bath, etc.) was excellent. ... Food was excellent. All service was warm, courteous, prompt. Location (middle of downtown area) is great, and a few blocks from all the light-rail lines. We did not use the pool or fitness center. Parking is expensive (downtown location), but you may not need a car - lots to see/do by walking or streetcar or bike. (You can rent a bike or a car by the hour.) We rented a car but we won't next time. It definitely earned those four stars to us. We will certainly stay there again.

Three Nights @ The Benson
Cindy Lou Jul 25, 2009
We came down from Seattle to explore Portland as part of a vacation. The classic older Benson was all that we needed in a ... downtown hotel with impressive interior design, great location and a helpful staff. Hallway noise did creep into the room at times, but that was the only negative. Valet parking was a little expensive ($29 per day plus tips), but that is to be expected downtown. We did miss the music in the Lobby Court, as we were there on a Sunday - Tuesday night visit. The staff directed us to Jimmy Macks in the Pearl District for a great evening of Jazz. We would have expected that there at least be someone on pianno every night in the Benson's Lobby Bar. We would stay at the Benson again when next we visit Portland.
