Stay Away

If by historic you mean old and run down, then yes the Gideon is historic. The finishes were worn, the paint on the ceiling was peeling, there was no fan in the bathroom, the tile was painted, the plumbing fixtures were rusted, and the hot water kept running out. The Gideon could definitely use a modernization. Additional, I found the Gideon front desk to be very unaccommodating. We visited the hotel as party of the wedding party. We arrived early because we had to attend a rehearsal. Not only would they not allow us to check in early, but they also harrassed us when we came back to check in on time (the wedding party reservations were all made under one name). At a very exciting and hectic time, it was frustrating to be treated so poorly. Upon check out, we requested a late check out (we were in the wedding party and had a lot of stuff as well as a brunch to attend). We were abruptly and insincerely told that it would was not allowed. Given all the other hotels in the area, i would highly recommend chosing a different hotel to stay at.

Outstanding location for the price!

Lovely old world charm. The grounds were spectacular. The room was nice and the beds were great. The hotel is old and in a state park and that is what gives it it's charm. We had a great deal that included breakfast and two mineral baths all for $106.00. I would definatley book there again.. Staff friendly and attentive.

Great place

The hotel exceeded our expectations. It was beautiful, very clean, comfortable. Our package included breakfast which was excellent. We also had a mineral bath included, which was an unexpected great perk. We walked to our show at SPAC and couldn't have been more pleased.

grandeur in decay

we stayed in one of the updated rooms - everything was great except for the bathtub. they had them painted instead of re-glazed so paint peeled off and floated in the tub when you took a bath. otherwise, the room was large - the beds were comfortable...the staff was friendly and accommodating. we have a very active three year old and no one complained about her running around like the place was hers. i had a mineral bath and a deep tissue massage and they were great - and i'm a pretty big massage snob.

Elegant, peaceful historic hotel

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay - peaceful, historic surroundings. Fixtures dated but for the most part elegant. Drinks and breakfast in Putnams were good quality and value. Friendly and helpful staff.

Nightlife tip: Short drive from hotel

Plenty of restaurants and entertainment to choose from in town - drive north up Broadway. Found Saratoga Gaming and Raceway a little seedy - tho harness racing was interesting to watch (head south on Broadway then left on Crescent Rd).

Beautiful!

It was beautiful! The building is very historic and has been updated. The bathroom still had original tiles, but was immaculate. The white bedding was the cleanest I had ever seen! Walking around the grounds was amazing! The staff was so friendly and courteous as well!

Classic Saratoga

We have stayed at the Gideon before and love the old Saratoga feel. It is very peaceful and the park is a great place to explore. The Victoria Pool is very beautiful, well-run and large. However, it is a bit of a walk from the hotel- bring the stroller if you have a little one! The food was very well prepared for hotel food. Bathrooms could use an update.

Great location and ambience!

The outdoor dining was great, it was cool and restful and a two piece acoustic duo performed while I had dinner. It's also just a few minute walk from the Saratoga perfoming Arts Center or around there, it's know as the 'SPEC.' There is also an art gallery with great Horse racing sculptures and paintings for the horse racing aficionado. One of the best stays I've had!

classic old dame

I was really happy with the Gideon Putnam resort. As we parked the car in the center of a gorgeous pine forest, two gigantic red headed woodpeckers were a few yards away and I knew it was a good sign. Check in was smooth, a nice wine and cheese happy hour in the lobby was an unexpected perk. FoxHill wine was very nice and the crackers and cheese were not average at all. Whole grain and sesame flats and some really tasty NYS cheddar. Our room was very clean and very good bed linens. Nice view of the grounds over the front entrance. We really found everyone to be friendle and especially a chambermaid named [...] who was so eager to give advice and chat. The pool alone was what will bring me back next sumer and we loved the architecture and flowers. Breakfast was very good albeit a bit pricey....$9. for eggs and sausage???Come now! Our dinner in the Putnum room was not good.Vegetable pasta was really bland and all we could taste was red pepper. Pizza was very soggy and the mozzarella was like chewey plastic...almost unmelted. Again, for the money, I would eat off premises....a shame because we liked everything else about the place. The proximity to SPAC is of course the main reason to stay there. My blueberry pancakes were really good but for $8., they should be. I spent $204. dollars after booking on Orbitz for $159. That included the breakfast. I still would recommend this place and highly recommend swimming in the beautiful pool.
