Overview

Henry Roger Wolcott hired John H. Duncan, the same designer who built Grant s Tomb, to build the Wolcott Hotel New York in 1904. The Erlich family purchased the hotel in 1975 and they have since been dedicated to its meticulous restoration. Adventurous travelers looking for a comfortable yet elegant home base while they tour New York City should consider staying at the Wolcott. Rich in history, if the walls could talk they would relate marvelous stories such as when, in 1907, Edith Wharton penned her novel, "The Fruit of the Tree" while in residence. As time advanced, celebrities including Buddy Holly, the Everly Brothers and Miles Davis also stayed in rooms here. French and Renaissance styles and ornate stonework adorn the Wolcott and upon entering the lobby look up to see crystal chandeliers and marble columns.

Perfect sightseeing location

Hotel is a perfect location for all of New York tourist attractions. Hotel is lovely and warm and perfect for what you need. Decor a little dated but the location more than makes up for this. Staff very helpful! Free morning muffins a great touch!

Great location if that's all you want!

Would not recommend Wed, Jan 6, 2016
Location very good, close to Penn Street and Macy's and very close to a 'Bread and Butter' deli for excellent, reasonably priced food. Hotel reception is beautiful but this does not extend to the rooms, which are outdated. Hotel staff were fine, but I would not describe it as a friendly hotel. Wifi not free and we did not pay the expensive fees. Coffee and muffins in the morning but nothing to shout about. Ice machine and vending machine on bottom floor but we had to find this for ourselves as no one pointed it out. I asked myself would I return to the Wolcott and the answer is no, as it was over priced and basic.

Second time we've used the wolcott, it's relaxing, comfortable and the position is pretty good just round the corner from empire state and macy's store.and a short stroll up to times sq. The decor is pretty impressive in the reception area and the rooms are quite large and roomy, would definitely recommend this hotel just fails on the wifi find its very expensive..

You get what you pay for

Overall it was a good value for the money spent. I had a junior suite so I had a bathroom in my room. I got the impression that some rooms did not have a bathroom as there were rest rooms in the hallway. The bed was comfortable and the TV worked well. The bathroom décor was right out of the 1970's with black and white tile floors and a ceramic towel hanger. One morning one the two elevators wasn't working which was a hassle. The continental breakfast was a nice touch and the location was good.

great Christmas weekend in NYC

Would recommend Tue, Dec 22, 2015
We loved the Wolcott. The character, history, and ambiance in an older hotel can't be beat. Our room was cozy and comfortable. The hotel staff were all courteous and smiling. A nice extra was the morning coffee and delicious muffins. We would definitely come back to the Hotel Wolcott! The location was just right for us to be able to walk to the Theater district and Times Square. We had a wonderful time. New York City is great!

quick pre-Christmas 2 day visit

Would recommend Wed, Dec 16, 2015
It's around the corner from the Empire State Building, and 2 blocks from Macy's. A few more blocks, and you're in Times Square. Only 10 streets away, and you're at Rockefeller Center. All within walking distance. We came by train, arriving at Penn Station, and that's only 3 avenues away. No cab fare needed at all. Great quick breakfast place away that the staff recommended, and thousands of other lunch & dinner spots, as you can imagine. It'll be my #1 first plan for next visit.
