Henry Roger Wolcott hired John H. Duncan, the same designer who built Grant's Tomb, to build the Wolcott Hotel New York in 1904. The Erlich family purchased the hotel in 1975 and they have been dedicated to its meticulous restoration ever since. Adventurous travelers looking for a comfortable yet elegant home base while they tour New York City will find just what they're looking for at the Wolcott. Rich in history, the hotel is the place where, in 1907, Edith Wharton penned her novel, The Fruit of the Tree, while in residence. As time advanced, celebrities including Buddy Holly, the Everly Brothers and Miles Davis also stayed at the Wolcott. French and Renaissance styles, along with ornate stonework, crystal chandeliers, and marble columns adorn the Wolcott.

Great Location

The location is great, walking distance of Time Square and the loads of shops! Empire State building round the corner, bus stop for sightseeing buses (definitely recommend). Muffins and coffee in the morning very nice. Love the original features of the old building but some parts a little shabby. We booked a junior suite, bed super comfy, room clean, BUT the wall paper was very green and overwhelming and we didn't realise we had booked a room with no view apart from a flat roof at the back. So the room seemed dark, however we were out most of the time. Had to pay for wifi, and not much TV channel choice. thought the concierge could have been a little bit more helpful New York is a great city though!

Great value in NYC, right in the middle of everything

I was kind of skeptical about booking at this hotel, due to some reviews here and on other travel websites, but I just got to the conclusion that these people that rated the hotel terribly just have no idea of how NYC prices go, plain and simple. First of all, the hotel is in a GREAT location. If we hadn’t stayed at this hotel, the other option in the same price range would be all the way down Manhattan, in the financial district, so probably only with cab costs we would’ve spent our entire budget. Instead, from the hotel you can walk easily to Times Square, Empire State (is like next door to the hotel), and the area is surrounded by businesses – literary across the street there’s a Subway and a coffee shop, couple of businesses up on 5th avenue there’s a pizza place and a bunch of pharmacies, so we could buy stuff everyday back to the hotel. The hotel itself you can tell is old, but very well kept. The lobby is beautiful, the corridors look outdated but very clean and well kept, and the rooms are very clean. You do get an air conditioning unit (not central air), but that worked well for us, and the only “complain” I would have was about the shower curtain/bath space that was very small that the curtain would be touching you while you’re having a shower. Other than that, the hotel was GREAT. They even serve a little breakfast in the morning, with coffee, milk, tea and delicious muffins. In my opinion, if you want better than that in Manhattan on the same location, you gotta drop the money for it. But for the value, the Wolcott is the greatest deal we possibly have found and I’m definitely staying there again next time I’m in the city.

Classic NYC hotel

My mother and I spent one night in this hotel during a quick NYC getaway. This place could not have been more perfect. The hotel lobby is absolutely gorgeous. They have information on the history of the hotel and it made us appreciate it even more. They've been able to maintain this over 100 year old hotel very well and have been true to the history of it. We stayed in a twin bed room - there were actually 3 beds because there was a sitting room with a twin bed set up as a sitting area, so we were able to sleep in separate rooms. There were lots of original details, like the beautiful crown moulding on the ceiling. They had muffins and coffee in the morning. They also had an area to store your bags if you arrive early or have time to spare between check out and when your are leaving NYC. The staff was friendly. Location was very convenient to Penn Station. Will definitely stay again if have the opportunity!
