Henry Roger Wolcott hired John H. Duncan, the same designer who built Grant's Tomb, to build the Wolcott Hotel New York in 1904. The Erlich family purchased the hotel in 1975 and they have been dedicated to its meticulous restoration ever since. Adventurous travelers looking for a comfortable yet elegant home base while they tour New York City will find just what they're looking for at the Wolcott. Rich in history, the hotel is the place where, in 1907, Edith Wharton penned her novel, The Fruit of the Tree, while in residence. As time advanced, celebrities including Buddy Holly, the Everly Brothers and Miles Davis also stayed at the Wolcott. French and Renaissance styles, along with ornate stonework, crystal chandeliers, and marble columns adorn the Wolcott.

Wolcott review

We've stayed at the Wolcott twice and it only gets better! You're in the center of Manhattan, just walk to 5th Ave. and catch a cab downtown or walk to the other corner (6th Ave.) and catch a cab in minutes to Uptown. You pay no more than $9.00 to the end of the island or to Central park. The subway entrance is 1/2 blocks away. The staff are GREAT! Knowledgeable on all the great authentic local inexpensive food places! Even on Perfect delivery service for those lazy nights in... The hotel has a great person to do research for you or use their computer on your own. They provide coffee and breafast snacks every morning! It's the perfect hotel for the person/ family on a budget or for that couple/ single person who wants to spend their money on shopping/ eating around NYC rather than on the hoterl where you only sleep a few hours a day! It will be my place of stay for years to come!

Good value hotel.

This hotel is very much like an old European hotel. It is in an okay neighborhood, a thirty minute or so walk to Times Square. The hotel staff was pleasant except for the woman behind the activities desk. No personality! The rooms are clean, with TV. I would recommend it for a family who is not going to spend much time in the room.

great location with atmosphere

The Wolcott Hotel has one of those superb/beautiful lobbies that you can spend time in without pressure. It has a very classic feel to it and the hotel guests were quite diverse, with many languages spoken. If you're looking for a hotel, for entertainment, I cannot speak to that, but the location is excellent for seeing all of NYC and having a great place to relax after a long day. After one day I felt like a resident New Yorker!

Time-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Two blocks from the Empire State Building and just off 5th Avenue. A few blocks to Grand Central Station for many choices for dining. Very accessable to subway & buses for short ride to Times Square, FAO Schwartz, and just about anywhere in Manhattan in under 20 minutes.

Great location; clean and comfortable

The Wolcott Hotel is less than three blocks from the Empire State Building, and within easy walking distance of Times Square, Grand Central Station, and Central Park, with the inexpensive city bus and subway lines very nearby for travel greater distances. The hotel is charming, beautiful in an old-worldly style, clean and comfortable. The breakfast muffins and coffee/tea are a delighful way to start the day, with a chance to meet other guests from far-away places. The hotel staff are friendly and helpful. When I developed an infection from a minor surgery I had before travelling, the desk clerk called a physician's assistant who makes house calls, and she was there to see me within an hour, after 10 pm on a Sunday night! I was able to obtain a prescription from an all night pharmacy and continue my tour uninterrupted the next day. The room was quite small, but adequate, and the bathroom was roomy and the beds comfortable. I would love to visit again some day soon!

In addition to the many attractions within easy walking distance, don't hesitate to use the inexpensive subway system and city buses, which run within a block or so of the hotel. They are fast and fun!

Very,very clean

The rooms are very well maintained and extremely clean which was important to us. If you are a walker-we are-the location is fine. There is dining in the area, not in the hotel. We did not realize we would have a separate sitting room. Staff was very helpful in getting us to the airport.

Fabulous stay!

We did a lot of sightseeing. In comparison to the previous stay in February which was in Chinatown, 91 Hotel Wolcott's location (on the corner of Broadway and 5th avenue) was time saving as a great many attractions are a stroll away (Empire, Broadway theatres). However, if you wish to go further (Metropolitan museum, for example, or the Statue of Liberty)a subway (line B and D) is a couple of minutes walk from the hotel.

Macy's shopping mall. We were lucky to see the presentation of Madonna's new collection Material Girl at Macy's. The hotel has convenient lockers (for 50 cents) so if your departure is after check-out time(11am)you may leave your suitcases in the lockers and explore NY. Complimentary coffee and muffins in the morning is a nice addition if you want light breakfast. And most important, the staff was awesome!

Midweek getaway

Location: Great location. Just 3 blocks from the Empire State Building. Convinient garage parking right infront of the hotel. Close to everything. Dunkin donuts at the corner. Room: spacious. Got three twin beds, i was looking forward to a king or queen since im by myself. The third bed is on a "separate" room. Like you have your own private oasis. It has its own tv. No view on both windows. Service: fast check-in. No drama when it come to check in time. Once theres a room available, you can get it. Breakfast available. Coffee and muffins. Good enough to start your day. Gym needs to be updated. Note: funny smell on the hallway.
