Henry Roger Wolcott hired John H. Duncan, the same designer who built Grant's Tomb, to build the Wolcott Hotel New York in 1904. The Erlich family purchased the hotel in 1975 and they have been dedicated to its meticulous restoration ever since. Adventurous travelers looking for a comfortable yet elegant home base while they tour New York City will find just what they're looking for at the Wolcott. Rich in history, the hotel is the place where, in 1907, Edith Wharton penned her novel, The Fruit of the Tree, while in residence. As time advanced, celebrities including Buddy Holly, the Everly Brothers and Miles Davis also stayed at the Wolcott. French and Renaissance styles, along with ornate stonework, crystal chandeliers, and marble columns adorn the Wolcott.

Classic NYC hotel

My mother and I spent one night in this hotel during a quick NYC getaway. This place could not have been more perfect. The hotel lobby is absolutely gorgeous. They have information on the history of the hotel and it made us appreciate it even more. They've been able to maintain this over 100 year old hotel very well and have been true to the history of it. We stayed in a twin bed room - there were actually 3 beds because there was a sitting room with a twin bed set up as a sitting area, so we were able to sleep in separate rooms. There were lots of original details, like the beautiful crown moulding on the ceiling. They had muffins and coffee in the morning. They also had an area to store your bags if you arrive early or have time to spare between check out and when your are leaving NYC. The staff was friendly. Location was very convenient to Penn Station. Will definitely stay again if have the opportunity!

Great NY Hotel

Located two blocks from the Empire State building and walking distance to Penn Station, Grand Central Station and even Central Park ( Hotel is about 1.5 miles south of the Park.) We even walked to Times Square! The Junior Suite was just like the pictures. Pleanty of space in the bathroom and clean. Bed was comfortable and air conditioners worked great. No problem with noise. Staff were very helpful and polite.

The Lion King completely lived up to expectations. The Wollcott is located about a mile away from Times Square- not too far to walk! No need for dinner reservation after the show on a weeknight- fantastic!

Great bargain hotel!

We were apprehensive of what we would be getting for such a low rate in NYC in such a nice, central neighborhood. What a great surprise! It's a classy old hotel within walking distance to Penn Station and around the corner from the Empire State building. Lots of great walking, buses and subways very nearby. We don't do shopping, but if you do, the great Macy's is a couple of blocks away. It's a great location for long or short sightseeing walks all around. The hotel staff was very friendly and nice, and there's a workout room. It's quiet despite the location. The entire hotel is air conditioned (thank goodness!! It was almost 100 degrees when we were there!). Our room was very small, had no window view of anything at all, but this is NYC ...We were hungry when we arrived at 10pm and there was a great little restaurant right across the street. The hotel breakfast consists of muffins and coffee, that's it. Another nice convenience: lockers to rent for a mere 50cents! (Penn Station no longer has lockers.) Check out is 12:30, which is nice, but you can leave your luggage in the locker and go out sight seeing. We would definitely go back to the Hotel Wolcott.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

Though the view from the Empire State building is really great, as is the interior of the building, it is really, really crowded when you finally get to the top after waiting forever on a long line. It's so crowded on the observation deck that it kind of ruins the experience. I bet if you go really early in the am it's alot better...

Felt like a favorite little Paris hotel

I was looking for a small hotel with character, close to my client near the Empire State Building, shortwalking distance to shopping on 34th St., for around $200. The Wolcott Hotel fit the bill perfectly. While the room and bathroom were compact (more like Europe), my non-smoking room was clean and quiet, staff was courteous, and a continental breakfast was included. Not plush, but perfect for my needs. I will return.

Not bad for the money

Small but nice ornate lobby, though the room felt like it was last updated in the 1940's. Still, it was clean, the bed was comfy and the price was right.

Great for the Price!

Were in New York just for the night for work event and just needed a place to stay. Didn't see much of hotel other than lobby and room, so I can't comment on that. Room was nice and was also quiet. Location is about 3 blocks from a metro station so very convenient to get around. Great value. It's not the Ritz, but for the price you can't beat it.

Elegant, comfortable, attentive staff

This trip was for our 5th wedding anniversary.I really liked this hotel. The location was five star. The lobby staff was friendly and professional. The maid service was excellent. The king room was not too small and the bathroom was huge for NY. Aside from the staff and the ambience of this ornate jewel, the location of the Wolcott is great. Subway stations close by, Keen's Steakhouse within walking distance as are so many major NY attractions. We stayed for three days and it was the best hotel experience out of the four trips I've made. Previous stays including the Hyatts and the Waldorf.

just for sleeping

If you're coming to the city with lots of things to do and all you really need is a place to sleep and that's it, then this is a good place to stay. It was clean but it doesn't have a lot of amenities. What we found strange was that they did not provide wash cloths for the bathroom. You have to bring your own wash cloth or loofa. The location is really convenient since you are close by to 3 different subway lines and they did provide breakfast which consisted of coffee, tea and muffins, but do not fret if you're in the mood for more then just that, their is a Dunkin Donuts right across the street.
