Book with confidence

This is a perfect 3 star hotel. It's very traditional with lots of gold around the hotel. It was a stones throw away from the Empire State Building. It was so close that we had to make sure our curtains were closed at night as the glow from the top shone through. The view from our window was incredible with the Empire State in all it's glory. It was also very close by to Madison square garden which is handy if your going to see the Knicks, GO KNICKS!! If you look at a map I would say the Wolcott is pretty much central in downtown manhattan. It is right in the middle between Central Park and say ground zero. We walked every day up as far as central and yes it's a lot of walking but you do want to see everything on the way. The hotel rooms were perfect with a big flat screen tv on the wall. The rooms were always heated and never once cold. The were always tidy and never saw any dirt around. The bathroom was also clean and fairly standard although it did take a long time for the hot water to warm up. Wifi was cheap although signal in the room wasent great but down stairs in the lobby it was perfect and we used Skype for back home a lot and worked with no issues. In summary the Wolcott hotel is not a five star hotel however we did not want a five star hotel. The only time we spent in the hotel was when we went to sleep. With that in mind we decided to choose this over a more expensive hotel and spend the money we saved else where. The Wolcott is similar to a premier in but much fancier, it does exactly what it says on the tin. It is lovely accommodation, great value for money and ideally located. Book with confidence you won't be dissapointed. The attached photo is the view from our window with no zoom. What you see is what you get!!! Breath taking

Shopping tip: Long walk from hotel

Bloomingdales is a much further walk than Macy's however is worth the distance. They are owned by the same companies however the staff in Bloomingdales are much nicer, you get a better discount and bigger knock down prices in the sales. Visiting card is always worth getting for a 10% discount off most items except some select designers. I bought a Tag Heuer watch and saved a massive 15%. Worth the trip

Better than expected

Got a great rate in a great location just a few walkable blocks from Penn Station. Small but clean room. Only two complaints -- really bad tv picture, barely watchable, and the room was VERY hot -- the heating definietly works (was an unusually mild December night). But the windows do open, and with the help of staff I did figure out how to reduce the heat (old style circulating water heat), so just an hour or two of mild discomfort. Well worth it!

Empire Pizza a block away on 5th Avenue serves a mean, old-style New York pizza. Yum!

Needs a freshining up

We reserved a non-smoking room, however, upon checkin were told that "non-smoking" was merely a REQUEST and not a given. We were placed in a smoking room and the lingering stale tobacco got to be just too much. We were then placed in another smoking room (they didn't have any non-smoking rooms available) which didn't smell as bad. Unfortunately at 6 am we smelled aweful, ethnic food odors wafting up the central air shaft and permeating our room. I went down to the front desk and was informed that not only were about half the floors in the hotel dedicated to smokers, but they also had permanent residents and it was likely one of them cooking. They did eventually change our room to a non-smoking room, facing 31st. Despite the significant street noise (we slept with the TV on) and the difficulty regulating the temperature in the room, we were so elated to have a room which was palatable. I would be hard pressed to stay there again tho.

Worn down hotel in small side road of 6thAve. Has certainly seen better times - maybe 70 years ago. Room micro small. Bath room at least warm water but sink was made for dwarfs. Heater in the room was a one hot iron piece from 1930's that started to make music with 10 knocks every 1 hour. Good night sleep guaranteed.

Last resort

I'm a business traveller. stayed here to save money during the busy holiday rush when the typical room was 2X what I typically pay. Room was tiny, but clean. bathroom was almost too small to stand in, and I'm not a big guy. I was on the top floor, but the street sounds make it seem like I was on the 2nd floor. location is OK. near the subway but not walkable to mid-town offices. walkable to penn station.

Optimum location and friendly staff

The room appearance was clean and comfortable considerable the age of the hotel. There is a need for pest control with a few small roaches noted. New carpeting would help in the hotel's face lift. Overall, wonderful stay for a short getaway weekend.

Pretty decent actually!

The Wolcott is more or less what it describes itself as, clean, functional (if a bit gaudy) and with an exceptional location. Subway stations were close by and the area was safe and quiet at night. Free wi-fi would have been a decent perk, rather than the high rates charged to get it yoursef. The room was on the small side and could have benefited from a tad more storage, but was clean and the standard of housekeeping was great. If you plan on being out and about rather than in a hotel, then that's not much of a problem! There was an issue with our reservation as *this website* had not released the funds to the hotel but the staff at the Wolcott assisted with this on our behalf and resolved the situation quickly. I did find some other staff members and the concierge a little on the brusk side, although I would happily return if on the same budget.

Get a Zagats guide and stick to it! There are a lot of wonderful places to eat in the city but around tourist areas, not so much.
