just ok

It was a great location, but the rooms were old and lacking common perks like in room coffee. It was clean and good for a cheap price. The location was perfect

Wellington too old

The Wellington badly needs updating; taps old and hard to turn, no vanity in bathroom. If you are going to NYC, the hotel is part of the experience. Spend the little extra cash it will take to have a better hotel. There are no fitted sheets on bed; not enough towels or shampoo, etc. One fork, two plates in Family Suite! When asked, staff comes quickly with what you need, but why must you ask. Only good thing was that staff was friendly and helpful.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Buy a subway pass. We wasted time on a city bus. We bought a hop on hop off tour bus ticket the first day and saw the NYC at night; took the downtown tour which gave us our bearings. The pass was $54. You wouldn't need it the second time to NYC. Street vendors start high with price but come down to about 50 - 75% less. Canal Street is no cheaper than the street vendors for purses and can be scary as you have to follow a scouter down basement steps or get into a van where doors are locked. We were confident from others' comments that this was safe but in retrospect would not bother doing it again. There is a free Staten Island ferry that takes you out to the Statue of Liberty but you need to get tickets well in advance. Most of the T.V. shows we tried to get into don't tape over the summer. The city smells, is always crowded and noisey at night. It probably appeals to the 20 to 40 crowd more. We didn't go to bars. The Broadway show, Chicago, was a highlight, but the Bodies Exhibition, while exceptional, would not appeal to kids or most people who were not in the medical field. For those, it would be amazing.

New York City

The Hotel is old so there isn't much space in the bathroom to spread out your personal items. No fan in the bathroom. We could hear the people in the hall and the next rooms. Wish we were closer to Time Square. I would not reccomend this Hotel.

Needs a makeover

We thought other reviews were so good that we booked this hotel and were greatly disappointed. I wish we had spent a little more money and stayed at one of the many other nearby hotels. At the Wellington, the room, halls, and elevator were all dingy and badly in need of updating. The bathroom light didn't work, the TV couldn't maintain a signal and cell phone service from the room was also very difficult. The staff was attentive. As others have said, it's a great location if you like theater and museums - we do - and the subway is right there so you can easily get to any place in the city. There are also many restaurants and delis nearby in every price range.

Average

The hotel was disappointing. It was very old and dated and I certainly wouldn't class it as 3 star accomodation. The staff were very helpful though.

A Bit Short

This was my second stay at the Wellington. I returned, obviously, because my experience two years ago was good. Unfortunately, I did no have the same experience this time around. My room was much smaller this time. Apparently, a regular sized mattress would not fit in this very small room. Not only had the mattress been significantly shortened, it sank in the center. It reminded me of one Lucy & Ricky tried to sleep in on their way to California. The staff was friendly and the Park Cafe has good food and service.

Great Birthday Getaway

Initial room was too small. We were given another room that was already occupied. The third room was okay. I drink a lot of water and missed the courtesy ice machine. We were very busy and did not stay in the hotel for long periods, only to sleep.NY is a fantistic city, a lot to see and do. A great time was had by all. I've had better hotel accommodations. The 2-star rating is for location only.
