Roger Smith Hotel

Old building not updated. Mangy carpeting all over. HVAC was awful. I turned on the heat and went to relax. After a while I thought, oh no, it's raining very hard. But it sounded too loud. I got up and there was water running all over the floor from the HVAC unit. I had to turn it off and had no heat that night. They fixed it the next day but the temperature could not be adjusted. I'd rather have no heat than be hot. This place should be avoided. Shower water temp varies. Lobby is awful. The Roger Smith is beat.

Should have been much better

This is a small hotel and so there is no pool, workout room, etc., though there is a decent restuarant. Since it's Manhattan, it's hard to single out any one place being noisy because it's everywhere. The big problem was the air conditioner: it reeked. There was either mildew or bacteria or something which was causing a bad odor to spread through the room while it was on. The night shift attendant noticed it right away but all he could do was spray air freshener on it. The filter was very dirty also. The maintenance/repair people blew off the repair and did not fix it. For nearly $300 a night, that shouldn't have happened. The manager made no offer of compensation, I had to ask for it. All he was willing to do was credit $50 - should have been at least 1 free night!

Rough around the edges

The room is no frills but we we OK with that with a "more affordable" rate. Free WIFI was a nice perk. However, the room temp couldn't be easily moderated and we were very uncomfortably hot during the night Also, the mattress wasn't up to conventional/high-end standards. We didn't eat at the hotel so we can't comment on that aspect, but to cap off a less than stellar stay the front desk never answered the phone on 3 separate occasions: once to get our car from valet parking, once to inquire about an extended checkout (no was the answer), and to report there was no hot water (problem was at the street, to be repaired by Con Ed). In summary, I'm going to Marriott next.

Needs some help

The Roger Smith served its main purpose for the stay, which was being a place to sleep and clean up before the next day in the city. The room was nothing extraordinary, and I've enjoyed better-appointed, more updated rooms in cheaper hotels; the stained carpet and headboard that leaned against the wall the whole stay were the most obvious problems. This doesn't strike me as a couples' hotel, especially with the narrow shower - further exacerbated by the poorly placed handicap bar and cloth liner that stuck to you and leaked like a sieve. The restaurant was disappointing and slow. We ate there once and it took an hour even though we were the only ones there. Even though it's not in the heart of Manhattan, the Roger Smith is in a convenient location and about a 15-minute walk from Times Square at a much lower price.

Good Stay

Went for a quick last minute end of year trip to NYC and found the Roger Smith! We loved the location as we could walk to American Girl Store, Rockefeller Center, St. Patricks Cathedral, Times Square and ice skating at Bryant Park! There was nothing overly special about the room but nothing wrong either. Everything was clean and neat and the price was right. We didn't stay in the room very long and but it served our purposes perfectly at the right price!

Walking distance from Grand Central

I booked a room with two full beds and at first they put us in a room with only one bed so when we went back down to the lobby to remedy the situation, one of the employees started to give us attitude and was making it seem like we were just going to have to "deal with it." Then the other man, I think he was the manager, took care of the situation. Very nice man, he upgraded us to a jr. suite for no extra charge!! The only other thing worth noting is that the room was on the warm side. It did have air conditioning, but I was really hot and didn't sleep that well. It also was in the 90s outside so that might have something to do with it. Overall good stay, only a few blocks from grand central station.

Old school, great location

Very nice older property, clean, smallish rooms but nice layout. Shower temps a bit quirky. Perfect for rock center and shopping
