Great value for a classic NYC hotel

This was a mini-vacation and the midtown location made it easy to see the sites. Staff was especially helpful and friendly. Room had a homey feel, including a credenza with books to read! I liked that the tv was situated so you could watch from a chair as well as the bed.

Comfort of a B&B in NYC

We've stayed at many of the premiere luxury hotel properties in NYC, but this trip was spur of the moment and many of them were full do to the Christmas holiday. So we took a chance and looked online for a boutique hotel. The Roger Smith exceeded our expectations! It had a cool vibe, the staff was friendly and helpful. Our room was spacious and lent the feeling you might find in a bed and breakfast. Staying in a small hotel was cozy and comfortable, but it was still big enough to have a bar and restaurant. We loved the location which was convenient to great shopping and dining. Overall, it was an outstanding value and made our trip more pleasurable.

Excellent hotel!

The Roger Smith is a charmer -- graceful bronze sculpture outside the door and other bronzes sprinkled throughout the downstairs area, a staff that doesn't ignore you when you approach the front desk (the manager even stepped in to check us in, as the other staffer was on the phone), excellent location, spotless -- just wonderful overall.

Cold showers in otherwise lovely hotel

Finding a clean hotel in a great location of NYC is tough for 2, add on a 3rd and it's nearly impossible! It seems a king bed is the answer for 3 from most hotels. The Roger Smith was in a great spot with beautiful, artsy vibe. They also had 2 full size beds to accomodate us. We hit up a bunch of galleries in Chelsea, had drinks in midtown, and wrapped up the evening in the Russian Tea Room and a stroll by 30 Rock. Street noise was distracting, so bring some ear plugs if you sleep light. The night's rest was cozy, with rooms that feel like your sleeping in a wealthy grandmother's place. We were, however, bummed that the water was ice cold and impossible to shower in. The issue wasn't resolved until we checked out, and I feel the front desk should've appologized upon checkout.

Dining tip: In Hotel

The dessert and drink list of the hotel looked amazing, but they close at 1am. So get in there before your nightcap!

Should have been much better

This is a small hotel and so there is no pool, workout room, etc., though there is a decent restuarant. Since it's Manhattan, it's hard to single out any one place being noisy because it's everywhere. The big problem was the air conditioner: it reeked. There was either mildew or bacteria or something which was causing a bad odor to spread through the room while it was on. The night shift attendant noticed it right away but all he could do was spray air freshener on it. The filter was very dirty also. The maintenance/repair people blew off the repair and did not fix it. For nearly $300 a night, that shouldn't have happened. The manager made no offer of compensation, I had to ask for it. All he was willing to do was credit $50 - should have been at least 1 free night!
