Not So Great Expectations
Travelin Mom Oct 13, 2009
We have stayed in New York many times so we have knowledge of several hotels. The shower was terrible with water spitting out ... all over and the tub filling up. My husband went to the car to get his charger, and it was unlocked with no-one around. Anyone could have stolen anything in the car! The best thing was the bed--very comfortable.

Good location and rooms, service lacking
Frequent Traveler Sep 27, 2009
I reserved a king-sized bed, but was stuck w/ two doubles on the first night. Once we got a king-sized room, we really ... enjoyed the location and the room comfort and decor, it was a relaxing stay. The TV, however, had no movie options, and who wants to channel surf these days? Plus, they charged us $4 to borrow a wine bottle opener, which was annoying. Otherwise, once the renovations are done in the lobby, it seems like a really nice place to stay. I would recommend if these issues are addressed.

Fun time in the city
i lurve LA Sep 10, 2009
The Helmsley was a good hotel to stay at during our weekend in NYC. The front desk and concierge were extremely friendly and ... helpful, but I often found that the cleaning staff was a bit rude. One time, my friends and I left our room around 11 AM. We asked the staff to come back later to clean our room and she gave us a big frown and said, "TOO late!" Really? Nonetheless, I thought that we got a pretty good deal for a nice hotel in the city. The only real complaints that I have about the hotel are that there wasn't much to do in the immediate vicinity of the hotel, and that the nearest subway station was off from the main lines. Otherwise, a great stay - clean, spacious (for NYC), and quiet.

Good Location, Ugly Lookin Place
Family 'O Four Sep 8, 2009
The Hotel lobby is under constuction, so you walk through a small entrance followed by a sheet-rock hallway leading to the ... elevators. Thats it! The reception is on the 3rd floor. The rooms are similar to a motel, with the exception that they do make the beds everyday and replace the towels. That is probably the only resemblance to a 4-Star hotel. There is no restaurant in the building but it's centric location saved the day! The place is not horrible, we just had a different expectation of what it would look like. I would have saved a few bucks and stayed on a 3-star on Times Square.

Bad experience
traveler875 Aug 19, 2009
I got there late with my wife and two parents, close to midnight. I had made the reservation at about 7pm that evening. ... When I arrived (with my confirmation of the booking at Orbitz.com), I was informed that the hotel didn't have my reservation and that they were overbooked for the night. The guy at the front desk was dismissive and acted as if I had made some sort of mistake. Rather than helping look into the situation by calling Orbitz, he began to help customers in line behind us. We had to stand there and wait for someone else to get off break to help us sort it out. I ended up on the phone with Orbitz for about 45 minutes and in all the four of us stood at the front desk for over an hour before getting to a room. Of course, the hotel went on and on blaming the situation on Orbitz. Horrible situation, but compounded by horrible service from the hotel.

The location of the hotel is amazing. It is located to the west of Times Square, a short walk and south of Central Park. The ... metra is close however i recommend walking to 5th ave, times sqr, and central park. The view is amazing and worth the walk. As we arrrived at check in we were told that our room was upgraded. The upgrade was directed probably to the floor of our room b/c the view was amazing. The rooms were clean with neat linen, however it took a while for the water in the bathtub to drain. Besides for that inconvenience the room was worth it. Overall the price was pretty fair for the location and the view. Right next to the hotel there is a cafe with breakfast and lunch options for pretty cheap, compared to other food/beverage prices in NYC.

New York Trip
I love New York Aug 12, 2009
New York is always a wonderful place to visit. I don't look for to much entertainment as I really just enjoy walking around ... the city and taking in the sights. The hotel a few feet away from Grand Central Station, therefore, not in the heart of Time Square but an enjoyable walk approx. 20 - 30 min walk. Hotel nice and quiet at night. Hotel rooms okay could use some renovation also it is an older hotel. The rooms were neat and clean. I did have a problem with tub draining to slow, a note was left advising of the problem and it was fixed that day.

The good and the bad
First time to NY Aug 12, 2009
The room was very nice, the hotel is convenient to the subway, which we used alot. We found it inconvenient to use the ... concierge due to the fact the Hotel lobby and restaurants were under remodel, one had to get off on the 3rd floor to see the concierge and then take the elevator again to get to the ground level to take a cab or walk to the subway. The location of the Helmsley is excellent, and we believe all in all once they are finished with the remodel we would consider staying there again. We were disapointed when we arrived to see it in the state it was in...we were unaware when we booked out reservation that it was under construction..
Traveler type: Family
The subway entrance is just a short walk and takes you straight to Grand Central...we lucked out everytime we rode the number 4 train it was an express...so there were few stops...we took it to most of the attractions we wanted to see...ground zero, battery park, statue of liberty, statten island ferry, sea port marketplace, wall street...it was very convenient...pick up a small subway map at the GrandCentral information desk...it was a lifesaver.

FamilyGuy Aug 7, 2009
I would not stay there again. Good location and a nice, clean room. But the hotel is undergoing major renovation, so there ... is not much to it. No lobby. No restaurant. No vending machines even. It feels like a motel. We wanted something to drink, and so had to rely on room service. A one-litre bottle of coke and a one litre water cost us $30!!! I am not kidding. I know room service is expensive, but this was outrageous, especially since there was no vending machine.
