Chic decor, luxury amenities at this stylish hotel near Gramercy Park
This hotel is all about style. Its small size (just 135 rooms) and location in the Gramercy Park neighborhood make it feel more intimate and less touristy than a Midtown high-rise property. Modern furniture and animal print accents lend a hip vibe. Frette linens and marble bathrooms provide luxurious touches. A guest lounge offers free coffee and tea and computers for guests to use.
Highlights
  • Luxury linens and marble bathrooms
  • Guest lounge with seasonal outdoor terrace
Location

The neighborhood is known for its historic townhouses. Gramercy Park, however, is private, so only neighborhood residents have access. The blocks just south of the park are full of restaurants, bars and shops. The Flatiron Building, Fifth Avenue and Broadway are just four blocks from the hotel. Union Square is a short walk from the hotel, and from there it's just a couple more blocks to the famous Strand Book Store. Greenwich Village, the East Village other exciting neighborhoods are an easy subway ride away.

Rooms

Rooms are chic and modern, with accents such as animal-print pillows, velvet drapes and leather headboards. Beds are dressed with Frette linens and down comforters. Marble bathrooms have bath products by Lather. Expect in-room amenities including iPod docking stations, bathrobes and slippers, 32-inch LCD TVs, Wi-Fi (fees apply) umbrellas and in-room safety deposit boxes.

Features
The 10th floor guest lounge offers free coffee and tea and computers for guests' use and has an outdoor terrace open seasonally.

Hotel guests receive discount passes to the nearby New York Sports Club.

They were horrible

I arrived at the Marcel at 2:30am after being delayed on a flight into Newark and as a result just barely missing the train into Penn Station. Upon arriving, the guy at the front desk told me he didn't have any rooms and had to move me to a different hotel 30 blocks North. At 2:30 in the morning. Why didn't they let me know before I got there? With a 3:00pm check in time, they would have know they had to move me almost 12 hours earlier and they couldn't call or email me to notify me?

Cool vibe, clean and friendly...just a bit small.

I was here for one-night on business and The Marcel fit my needs. It was clean, the staff was friendly and the decor was very cool. My only complaint, like many others, is that the rooms are TINY. Clean, nice...but SMALL.

Tiny Room, Clean

The room is very small as was the bed. The shower didn't work particularly well. The room was very clean. I stayed overnight for work purposes and would stay again. If the shower worked better, i would have gone 4 stars.

Small Rooms But Good Location For Me

With our corporate offices on 21st and Park Ave. S, the Marcel Gramercy is in a perfect location, only a :5 minute walk. Be warned, the rooms are some of the smallest I have stayed in, in Manhattan. Not even enough room for a work area. Rooms are clean and that staff very friendly.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

If you like Thai food, Lantern is a short :10 minute walk on 2nd Ave. If you are just looking for a basic cuisine and like a variety of beers, The Tap Room is right across the street. A bit expensive, $30 for a burger and a beer, but definitely worth it after a long day at the office.

Comfy hotel close to everything!

I was given a room on the smoking floor for the first 2 nights even though I had requested a non-smoking one. The smell was quite unfortunate and it's location on the 2nd floor made for two sleepless nights because of the loud street noise. I was much happier though for my last 2 nights when I was given a non-smoking room a few floors up. Great aesthetics, pleasant staff, and yummy food from Inoteca downstairs!

Small, cosy, mid-centry mod decor boring

Very nice staff. All went well. Not good for a long trip--no closet, no bath, no full length mirror--but ok for a couple of days. As per short review, pseudo mid-Century modern decor better than shabby Holiday Inn generic 80s stuff, but starting to grate. Seems like cheap way to be hip.

Not a Bad Deal

The location was excellent; only a couple of blocks to the nearest subway stop. Of course there are tons of restaurants nearby (a trademark of NYC). The real negative was the climate control of the room: i.e. I had none. Thankfully it was Spring and I could open a window to cool down the room for sleeping BUT then you invite more street noise into the room.
