Perfect Overnight Accomodations

My niece and I were driving from NH to NYC to see a performance at the Lyceum and needed overnight accomodations. After much location deliberation, I chose the Lucerne away from Times Square. Upon arrival, well past the 7th inning stretch, we were expertly met, directed, assisted, and unloaded at the curb by the doormen and painlessly checked in and instantly upgraded by the clerk. Valet was offered however, we selfparked at a nearby garage for $34. The room was pleasing to the eye, spotless, fresh and well appointed. The beds were very comfortable. I arose early to attend 7:30 AM mass at nearby Holy Trinity Church and coffee and croissant 3 blocks from there at Le Pain Quotidien then, a refreshing walk in the crisp air to Central Park.

Double check your venue; not all Lincoln Center Events are at 65th Street. : ) And, many thanks to the Russian Cab Drive who got us to the theatre on time.

Great Hotel in a Safe part of town

The Lucerne is a very nice hotel in a fabulous part of town. It is only 1 block away from the subway, so it is easy to go downtown, but it is quieter and a little classier than Times Square or Mid-town. It is very clean and has a luxurious feel, even though it is fairly small. No comp. breakfast or anything like that, but it was a very pleasant and very quiet hotel.

Take the Staten Island Ferry across and back. It offers a great view of the Statue of Liberty, and it's FREE!

Lucerne in August

Pretty darned terrific. All went well. Just some extremely minor issues with amenities in the room that were quickly solved. Location could hardly be better. One block from the American Museum of Natural History, two blocks to Central Park and just a walk across the park to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Lots of great restaurants in the area.

A terrific Japanese Restaurant about two blocks north on Amsterdam on the east side of the street. The name may be Karu, but I am not sure. Pricey, but worth it.

Lovely setting for family with toddlers on the Upper West Side

We have twin 3 1/2 year old toddlers, and this was our first experiment with travel relying solely on mass transit. We picked this place because of its proximity to Central Park and the Museum of Natural History, but it proves to be a terrific location for a batch of other reasons. Subway accessibility is good (1 train at 79th street and Broadway, B and C at 81st Street and Central Park West), though neither stop is handicapped accessible (for that you take a seven block walk from the 72nd Street stop on the 1/2/3). Many terrific restaurants in the area, a top tier coffee shop cata-corner on Amsterdam Avenue, and a big low-priced grocery store chain at 72nd and Broadway. Our superior queen suite was ideal - for a Manhattan hotel, quite roomy main room with two queen beds, and a separate sitting room with a small kitchenette (fridge, microwave, Keurig coffee machine, a few plates, bowls, and silverware, and a corkscrew). Flat panel TV in both rooms, though the cable signal was not HD and defaulted to a stretched display. No particular view from our room and the windows were unopenable, nice from a safety standpoint, but meant we relied on the in-room AC units to regulate temperature (which they did well). Bathroom was a judicious size, well appointed, with Gilchrist & Soames toiletry products. Cleaning services were excellent, and you had your choice of two newspapers delivered to your doorstep every morning. In house WiFi worked pretty well, delivering good speed fairly consistently through the day. In the lobby, there is also a restaurant attached which is a very fine bistro-style, moderate-to-high priced French restaurant (nice if it's pouring and you're feeling lazy, though many fine take-out options will deliver to your room in the area and know the hotel well). Downsides: Our double wide stroller fit into the elevator only with wiggling and yanking. It did fit, but was something of a struggle, and anybody with a wheelchair may find the same struggle. You have to negotiate steps with said stroller or wheelchair, there is a side stair with a ramp though the ramp is not wide enough for a standard width wheelchair. Noise was reasonable, though I could hear my kids shrieking from around the corner as I was returning to the room one night, so I don't know how well soundproofed the rooms are (though nobody complained to us). All in all, though, this is more constructive criticism than genuine gripes. We loved this hotel and would definitely stay if we're looking to stay near the subway on the Upper West Side in the future.

For parents with kids, there's a lovely playground at 77th and Amsterdam (though this is closed when school is open, so weekends only). Central Park is up a hill and a little further down.

Use the subway! Less than a block from hotel, quicker than taxi by far, and a wk long ticket, good for subway and bus less than 30 dollars!

Solid performer

While our daughter was attending school in New York we stayed at the Lucerne many times. Nice rooms, attentive and friendly staff, and a good breakfast at the first-floor restaurant. We needed an Upper West Side location and Lucerne is convenient to shopping, eating, touring, strolling, and the subway.

Nice surprise

I thought the location was very good. More residential and quieter than staying in midtown or downtown. Close to the park, subway, shopping and dining. The room was comfortable and quiet. I would stay here again.

Sightseeing tip: Long walk from hotel

I thought the Staten Island Ferry was an easy way to see views of Manhattan, as well as the Brooklyn Bridge, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. It doesn't get you up close to the Statue but the views are still great. It's free and runs 24/7 every 30 minutes. Can't beat it.
