Simple, clean and cheap
The rooms are small, typical for NYC, but they are clean and comfortable. This is the second time I've stayed here and I would certainly come back again...

Good place to stay
The hotel was perfect for my needs - had to stay in Chelsea for an event and the location was perfect for this. The street felt a little deserted and it was no as convenient to lots of restaurants, at least ones that I wanted to go to. The room was clean, although small, but that is expected for a moderately priced hotel in the city. What made this hotel stand out was the absolutely friendliness and kindness of the staff. They were helpful, cheerful, and made my daughter and I feel very welcome. I would recommend The Gem.

Business stay
My experience at GEM was a total surprise. Not being able to envision where this hotel was located, I meandered along 36th street from 9th avenue. It was a small, neat hotel tucked into the street. The staff was warm and welcoming; the rooms clean and comfortable. The two negative things were beyond the control of the hotel--the view from the window in the room I have (but I was at the office most of the day so it did not matter) and the walk to the hotel along 36th street. If walking, it is safer to walk along 34th street to 10th Avenue then continue to 36th street. GEM hotel was a gem and I would return without hesitation!

Good Deal!
The Gem hotel is located few blocks from Time's Square, and the subway, so, the location is very good. The room was very clean and comfortable, my only suggestion would be to put another mirror at the room, besides the one in the bathroom. The staff is very nice, overall, great deal for staying!

great value, good service
I arrived in a rush, with meetings to get to....left my lap top in the lobby as I jumped into a cab to get to my first meeting.....staff called me to say they had found it and were worried I may need it for me meeting. I was blown away, they were thoughtful and helpful. would definitely go back! Great for business trips and very convenient location.

Adequate - at best
The room was tiny, as is typical in NYC. Relatively clean. TV remote was falling apart. Complimentary bottle of mouthwash was opened. Bathroom was clean. Bed linens needed to be replaced. About 10 channels on TV. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The wifi was slow. In 2011 in NYC this is unacceptable. Overall not bad. Maybe 10 - 15% more than what it should have been in terms of cost. Only stay here if you get a deal. It may be midtown but it may as well be the end of the world over there.
