Post-Family-Vacation Vacation

What a breath of fresh air. Although the room is "the size of a postage stamp" (description from the front desk), they provide a bottle of water, smiles and plenty of directions and assistance. Rooms aren't huge, but the location is great. We did lots of walking, ate great food, had some great drinks at some local watering holes, and caught a show in the Theatre District. Phew. A lot for 72 hours. A great value.

Pretty terrible

Overall, the GEM-SoHo was incredibly expensive and utterly not worth the price. The staff during check in and check out seemed overwhelmed and aloof. Our room was not ready for check-in time (3pm) and we had to wait in an awkward, small lobby area with three other parties, who were also waiting for their rooms. Once we got into the room, it was smelly, small, and not impressive. The heat was on full blast (very uncomfortable) and the sheets smelled like body odor. The bathroom towels were stained and not well folded. To make matters worse, the location is not SoHo. It really is in the Lower East Side. Overall, this was not the "boutique" hotel advertised and I would never stay here again.

Perfect Location, average comfort

The reason to stay at this hotel is the Lower East Side location. Otherwise, the hotel is no Gem. The staff at reception is friendly, but not efficient. The room is adequate, but could use much improvement in style and comfort. It also tend to be a bit noisy from the street traffic so bring your ear plugs. That said, I would stay here again. its still great for the value in NYC.

If you need to work out during your stay, go to the YWCA around the corner on Bowery and Houston, and get a day pass for $20.

Just not up to snuff

I was just expecting a more polished experience here. The lobby, elevator, and hallways were not well cleaned and didn't smell fresh. The staff, however, were very nice and accommodating, and did everything they could to make us feel welcome and comfortable. The location was very convenient for me to entertain some out-of-town guests in Chinatown and get to a friend's party in the East Village (which is why I chose this spot). I don't think I will go back though, as this hotel was just not up to snuff.

If you like dim sum, take your friends to Jing Fong in Chinatown. Just walk west on Houston to Elizabeth St and turn left. It's about a 10-minute walk and a nice tour of Nolita.

Great location!

Perfect place to stay for a weekend. The location. Was great. Lots of cool bars and restaurants near the hotel. Even though the room was super small, it was extremely clean. My fiends and I had an awesome time.

Clean and Convenient

I stayed here 3 nights on a business trip. The location was very convenient with lots of dining and entertainment options within steps. There was a theater right next door which I unfortunately didn't have time to check out. The room was small as you except in Manhattan. I wouldn't recommend more than 2 travelers/room. Everything was clean and sort of base minimum that I'd expect. I was on the second floor which was barely above street level but despite all the sirens, I slept well. I did run the fan all night for some white noise. Defining this hotel as "boutique" does seem like a stretch but they offered free ipod checkouts with walking tours which was a neat perk. I definitely wish I'd had time to try one out. I wouldn't say it's a must-stay but I'd stay there again so long as the price was right.

Inexpensive but nothing special...

This is an inexpensive hotel and decent for the business traveler. Honestly I was expecting a little bit more modern boutique flair from the pictures and a name like the GEM... However it was perfectly acceptable for the price. Would I stay here again? If the price is right - maybe, but I prefer others...

Good place to sleep

I had a very good experience here, just needed somewhere to sleep for a night, and this provided that in a great location. The room was small though, so not much room for anything besides the bed. Wouldn't want to stay here if I needed to sit down and do some work or something like that.

Great Location & Good Value

The hotel is very well located. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Rooms were neat and clean and fairly well appointed. The only thing that could be improved would be the size of the bath (for bigger than average people).
