Great cheap weekend getaway!

The hotel staff here were in general AMAZING. They do everything they can to make your stay and experience great! The hotel is also amazingly located just a 10-20 minute walk from all the best parts of Manhattan! The building itself is very old, so the water in the rooms is quite weak and not very warm... and the elevators are quite slow! Other than that, the hotel is great for a cheap weekend getaway!

Great Location but Hotel Under Construction

This hotel has the potential to be great but we stayed during the renovation so it is really difficult to review it fairy. There was only one elevator working, no lobby to speak of, no coffee shop, and one day no hot water. Despite all of that, we actually had a decent time. The staff is friendly, the rooms clean (though small), and the location cannot be beat. I would maybe stay again but not during renovation.

work trip

As for a place to stay the rooms are a bit like a dorm. However when in nyc why would you stay in your room? The lobby resturant and location are all fantastic.

A great stay at a lovely hotel

We (a small family of three) stayed at the Evelyn for two nights. This hotel was still in the process of renovating so the lobby wasn't quite ready but it was already quite charming. We booked a room with king-sized bed and we really liked how the room was decorated. It was elegant yet modern. I especially loved the shower. The size of the room is okay for NYC standard. Overall a wonderful stay. I'd recommend this little hotel. As for the location, this hotel is great. It's minutes of walking to Subway stations, Flatiron building, the Empire State building, and many little cafes nearby.

Good place for quick stay.

This hotel is under construction outside so it was a little hard to find. Once we got in they could not locate my reservation. It took so long that I had to leave and come back. When we finally got checked in the put us in the wrong room. When we finally got to the correct room tit was nice but very small. Decor is awesome and everything looks new. Luckily we only had to stay overnight. Valet parking is $40 a day and it takes 40 mins to retrieve vehicle.

Not ready for guests

This hotel is undergoing renovation. Some hotels manage to successfully renovate while also renting rooms to paying guests. Not this one. It should not be taking paying guests. Upon arrival at the Gershwin, you're not quite sure you've arrived. The only sign for the hotel, partially hidden beneath scaffolding, is a very small, makeshift panel on a metal stand. We had to get out of the cab in the rain to verify we'd found it. Looking through the double glass door into the lobby, the first thing you notice is the gigantic crack running the entire length of the terrazzo floor from the front door to the rear. At the back of the nearly empty lobby is a long table a few chairs. A lone guest was seated at that table with his laptop, working under the flourescent lights. About six feet away, in the rear right corner, was a huge pile of construction materials who someone tried to "hide" with a couple of tiny folding screens. The entire scene was pathetic. The desk clerk could use some training. He was neither welcoming nor helpful. Asked about room service, he replied, "we don't have it." Asked if there was water in the rooms, he said "nope." Given the general state of affairs, he might have said, "Gosh, we're sure sorry for the inconvenience, let us get you a bottle of water and bring it to your room." Fat chance. There was one working elevator for the entire hotel, so we waited nearly 10 minutes for the elevator to arrive. In this time, we saw some guy hanging out at the front desk reading the paper, apparently dressed in a dirty hotel uniform. However, since he never opened a door for a guest, got anyone a cab or lifted a bag, it was hard to tell who he was. In fact, it was a little creepy. I was glad there were a lot of other guests waiting with me for the elevator. Once in the room, things improved a bit although it was quite cold as the heat had not been turned on and the rooms do not have double paned glass. The hotel website makes the rooms look lovely, and they were freshly painted, but otherwise sort of empty and average. The floor, under our bare feet, felt a dirty. Gross. The sheets were soft and the bed comfortable, but we barely slept a wink because even on the 10th floor the noise in the street was just terrible. Yelling and garbage trucks and doors slamming and loud music until around 4 a.m., resuming around 6 a.m. In fairness, we did notice immediately that the room was noisy. We could have asked for another room at the back of the hotel. But, frankly, at 10 p.m. and tired, we could not face a potential 20-minute round trip elevator ride and a surly desk clerk who had not been able to come up with a glass water for us. What was the chance of his coming up with a more comfortable room? There was free, reliable WiFi. That was nice. Everything else had a makeshift, bare bones, grubby feel. Needless to say at this point, NOT recommended.

Good Value

Lovely hotel. The room was very nice and had a unique style. For a small space, the room felt very comfortable. The lobby looks off putting at first glance but thats mostly due to the on-going renovations. Close to everything downtown as well as the subway for other locals. Would book again.
