Good place for quick stay.

This hotel is under construction outside so it was a little hard to find. Once we got in they could not locate my reservation. It took so long that I had to leave and come back. When we finally got checked in the put us in the wrong room. When we finally got to the correct room tit was nice but very small. Decor is awesome and everything looks new. Luckily we only had to stay overnight. Valet parking is $40 a day and it takes 40 mins to retrieve vehicle.

Not ready for guests

This hotel is undergoing renovation. Some hotels manage to successfully renovate while also renting rooms to paying guests. Not this one. It should not be taking paying guests. Upon arrival at the Gershwin, you're not quite sure you've arrived. The only sign for the hotel, partially hidden beneath scaffolding, is a very small, makeshift panel on a metal stand. We had to get out of the cab in the rain to verify we'd found it. Looking through the double glass door into the lobby, the first thing you notice is the gigantic crack running the entire length of the terrazzo floor from the front door to the rear. At the back of the nearly empty lobby is a long table a few chairs. A lone guest was seated at that table with his laptop, working under the flourescent lights. About six feet away, in the rear right corner, was a huge pile of construction materials who someone tried to "hide" with a couple of tiny folding screens. The entire scene was pathetic. The desk clerk could use some training. He was neither welcoming nor helpful. Asked about room service, he replied, "we don't have it." Asked if there was water in the rooms, he said "nope." Given the general state of affairs, he might have said, "Gosh, we're sure sorry for the inconvenience, let us get you a bottle of water and bring it to your room." Fat chance. There was one working elevator for the entire hotel, so we waited nearly 10 minutes for the elevator to arrive. In this time, we saw some guy hanging out at the front desk reading the paper, apparently dressed in a dirty hotel uniform. However, since he never opened a door for a guest, got anyone a cab or lifted a bag, it was hard to tell who he was. In fact, it was a little creepy. I was glad there were a lot of other guests waiting with me for the elevator. Once in the room, things improved a bit although it was quite cold as the heat had not been turned on and the rooms do not have double paned glass. The hotel website makes the rooms look lovely, and they were freshly painted, but otherwise sort of empty and average. The floor, under our bare feet, felt a dirty. Gross. The sheets were soft and the bed comfortable, but we barely slept a wink because even on the 10th floor the noise in the street was just terrible. Yelling and garbage trucks and doors slamming and loud music until around 4 a.m., resuming around 6 a.m. In fairness, we did notice immediately that the room was noisy. We could have asked for another room at the back of the hotel. But, frankly, at 10 p.m. and tired, we could not face a potential 20-minute round trip elevator ride and a surly desk clerk who had not been able to come up with a glass water for us. What was the chance of his coming up with a more comfortable room? There was free, reliable WiFi. That was nice. Everything else had a makeshift, bare bones, grubby feel. Needless to say at this point, NOT recommended.

Good Value

Lovely hotel. The room was very nice and had a unique style. For a small space, the room felt very comfortable. The lobby looks off putting at first glance but thats mostly due to the on-going renovations. Close to everything downtown as well as the subway for other locals. Would book again.

Value for money near madison square

Staff is very friendly and rooms are new and perfect, location is great near underground, restaurants and jazz clubs. A jazz trio was playing in the lobby when we arrived . Was great. But the hotel is under reconstruction so looks not nice from the oudoor and there is only one lift for customers , the second one is for the workers. Quiet during the night , some noise during the day but we were not in New York for staying in a bedroom all day long !

Friendly Staff

The staff all were extremely nice and helpful. As soon as arriving in your room they give a complementary call to ensure that all is well. The only complaint was that they were renovating the hotel at the time of our stay making it a bit noisy within the hotel, but judging by the floors that had already been done this will improve the aesthetics of the hotel greatly.

in new York City for a night

I now live 100 miles north of NYC (after living almost 50 years in Manhattan) and come into the city a few times a month. I have stayed at a number of hotels I booked through this site - always at a highly reduced rate, of course!! The Gershwin is a bit on the shabby side, but the things they've done to make it more "upscale" are very intelligent, like removing the rugs and not using bedspreads, just a crisp white duvet cover on the blanket. Since rugs and bedspreads are two things people generally feel a bit uneasy about in not so great hotels, this was quite brilliant of them!! All in all, for the price I paid, it was more than fine. Good location, in the somewhat trendy Flaitiron district. Check out Madison Square Park a few blocks south - a small and very pretty park and not a place most tourists would generally think to go. Back to the hotel: the single elevator made getting to my room a bit slow, but that's not something that particularly bothered me.

Location Location Location - Excellent Staff

Stayed for St Patricks weekend. The hotel is in a superb location seconds from 5th ave so is ideal for Times Sq, Shopping etc etc. The hotel itself has the bare essentials but the location is so good everything is within seconds of the hotel. The room (double-double) was spacious and comfortable however the bathroom is in need of updating. This is being done as renovations are ongoing did not really bother us much. Look you get what you pay for but with regard comfort and location it is a great hotel and worth visiting. Finally, the staff at reception and door were absolutely fantastic. Always with a smile on their faces and they were very helpful with any questions we had.. Would return..

HMMMM

- Staff was very courteous and good. - THe Room was average - I doubt the window AC would do any good in summers - did not use it. They have a steam heater (right next to the bed)- which makes a lot of noice - plenty of heat though. - Hotel is still under construction.. lot of noice. - Elevators are a long wait.. ended up taking stairs most of the times. - Free Wifi is fast and good. - King bed was comfortable.

Good Value, Fabulous Staff and Location

I had stayed at the Gershwin about 8 years ago, perhaps under different ownership, so I was at first disappointed to not find the same colorfully bright walls filled with art as last time. The rooms are clean, beds decent, showers are strong and hot, but manage your expectations--it's old and a bit dumpy--paint was peeling from the trim in our room, but to be fair, they are in the process of renovating. The mid-town location is very convenient both for going up to Broadway and downtown. A++ to the staff. They really stood out in terms of attentiveness, professionalism, and friendliness. And--it was well staffed in terms of numbers, too. There was always someone readily available. Look beyond the renovations and age of the building, because the price can't be beat. A good value and a great experience.
