For a good start to your day, have a great, inexpensive breakfast right next door at a diner called The Red Flame. Great food, prompt service and great price.

Bucket list filler!

The Algonquin Hotel made our trip a wonderful experience! The history and class of this place are second to none. Location is great, we walked to a Broadway Musical, jazz club, Time Square and several great restaurants! The best part of the Algonquin was the way the staff treated us! Doomy and Patrick were hosts that welcomed us "home" to the Lounge each night! They remembered our names and treated us like special guests! Thank you!

Not Worth 4 Stars

This hotel has a 4-star rating, but the room was one-two stars. There was peeling paint and damp mould above the window. The carpet was torn and worn. The toilet-paper holder was broken. None of these things occurred overnight. This is quite disgusting for a hotel that markets itself as being classy.

Venerable, remodeled Algonquin -- worth a visit

Look, it's an old (though just recently remodeled) hotel in a prime location in New York. So you know it won't be cheap, and you know the rooms will be small. Neither factor bothered me. Remodeling included all new fixtures, ceramic, and marble in the baths; comfy new beds and furniture (remember, the rooms are small, so when I say furniture, think a small desk and chair and one stuffed chair) and flat-screen TVs, and new carpeting, trim work, and paint; redone lobby ("homey" -- stuffed with sofas, chairs, and tables -- no room here for expansive open space); and remodeled Blue Bar (all lighting is blue; I heard a woman complain it made her look ghostly, but I think it's sorta cool). Matilda, the house cat, remains a fixture, having fought off Mayor Bloomberg's attempt to ban her. The front desk, like everything else, is compact, but staffed with competent, friendly people. The two elevators (yes, they're small) can be slow, but not unacceptably so. Nice exercise room (small, natch) on the second floor, along with desks, printers, and 24-hour coffee. The "Round Table" (the restaurant off the lobby famous as a literary hangout in the early-mid 20th century) is overpriced, even by New York standards, and unremarkable. You can do better at dozens of places within an easy stroll. I recommend the Algonquin for a single person on a business trip, or a couple who intends to shop, go to restaurants, theaters, and museums. Not recommended for kids -- rooms are too small, and there's not much in the hotel to keep the kiddies interested. If traffic noise bothers you, consider asking for a room on a higher floor.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

The #1 attraction is the location. 44th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues, and between, and a short walk to, Times Square and Grand Central -- fortunately, 44th is considerable quieter than 42nd, the main corridor between the two. Left out of the front door takes you to 5th Avenue; take another left on 5th and you'll quickly be in the middle of the famous retail names. Right out the front door, and you're on 6th (also known as Avenue of the Americas), a major corporate office locus.
