Charming
Laurie Nov 16, 2009
The Mayfair is a charming old world hotel with an excellent location! The room was very small but perfectly adequate for the ... small amount of time we actually spent in it. It was very clean, charmingly decorated in a style that took you back to the 30 and 40s. The bathroom was equally small but the shower a masterpiece, with a strong spray and shower heads on opposite walls to relax the sorest muscles after a long day exploring the city. You couldn't possibly ask for a better location, just a half a block off Broadway in the center of Times Square! This hotel is for people who are looking for a wonderful bargain, tons of charm, and just the basics. The only problem we had was the room was very warm. We visited in the middle of an unseasonably warm November. The heat was turned on in the building and the air handlers couldn't manage to cool the room. If I could make one suggestion to the hotel it would be to offer coffee and tea in the lobby. There are many conveniently located coffee shops very close to the hotel but it would have been nice to run to the lobby in the morning without braving the outdoors at an early hour.

A flop house....
Luv2TravelLisa Nov 4, 2009
I cannot believe that this is promoted as a "charming, European-style hotel" It is a filthy disgusting flop house. The one ... decrepit elevator smelled terrible. The one double bed took up the ENTIRE ROOM with about six inches on either side of the bed. I stayed long enough to call and find another hotel and couldn't even turn my suitcase around in either the room or the teensy "hallway" to bolt out of there. I did not stay there either night, as I reported in an e-mail immediately that day to [...] Thank you.

Stayed @ Mayfair the night before a seminar @ Jacob Javits. We wanted to make the most of the few hours we had in the city ... without spending a lot. The Mayfair offers a great location, charming rooms for great value. I will say the room termperature was pretty warm and uncomfortable. The room was pretty small but the charm & quaintness made up for this.

Missed international connection, so had to over-night in NYC between JFK and LaGuardia. Excellent Location and exactly what ... you'd expect for a 3-star boutique hotel. No perks, but none needed between 11 pm and 6 am. Coffee pot in room would be nice, though. Rack rate at Hotel for king bed $165 (on guest sign-in form). Paid $205 + taxes through website.

Great location but really small
Cindy Oct 10, 2009
Was in NYC for business and wanted to stay in the city. The price was very competitive, so I booked it. Don't expect the ... typical business class hotel experience - you won't get it. People were nice, rooms were extremely small but clean, TV was 12", bed was okay and bigger than the twin advertised. The hair dryer had problems, I had to get my room key recharged each day, computer access very limited (I needed to print a boarding pass at 7:30 am and the little computer space was locked and not available. The staff let me use their computer). The location was perfect. Starbucks, restaurants, theaters all within a block.

Consider saving money by having breakfast on Times Square from the street carts rather than the expensive restaurants. A cooked while you wait egg and cheese begal with coffee was $4.75 rather than $16 or more from the sit down restaurants.
--Jim, Denver, CO Sep 28, 2009
At the present time - Sept. 09 - the South Ferry subway station is closed for renovations, so that to reach Battery Park from the 49th St area you need to take Line 1 from 50th St., change at Times Sq. to Line 2 or 3, then exit at Chambers St. and take a free shuttle bus. We were lucky the train we were on had an announcer who spoke very clearly so we knew what to do, but on the trains we changed to this was not the case and the drivers spoke too quietly, too quickly, or mumbled.
