Great place, nice folks, room is small
Amanda Dec 28, 2009
My husband and I took our first trip to NYC. We had a blast sight seeing and just taking in the city. The hotel was small ... and older but had a friendly and helpful staff. We bought a bottle of wine but forgot to get a wine opener and they let us borrow one. The room was small but that was fine for us, since we weren't in our room a whole lot. There really is no where to put your suitcase, kind of just have to put it on the bed. Not a big deal though. Our trip was four days, three nights and the last day we didn't stay in our room at all. This hotel is in a great location, we walked everywhere-close to Time Square, Rockafeller Center, pretty much every touristy type attraction. We even were able to walk to Central Park but it was about 10 blocks away. We would go back to this hotel. If you're looking for a relaxing room with a view, this is not it. This is a comfortable hotel where you mostly just sleep in. It had a quaint charm about it.

Do not go to Sbarro's pizza when you first get there and you are tired- it is close by the hotel but gross! You would think NY pizza would be good- but this place is in every mall in America and it was bad. I was tired and didn't read the sign right and wanted to get pizza and salad and I didn't realize that the salad bar was $8.99 per pound. I think I paid $18 for my plate alone for bad food! Now don't get me wrong, everything in NYC is expensive, especially in the touristy areas. The guys at the front desk knew of a few places off the hidden path, we asked them towards the end of our stay and wished we would have asked sooner. There's a little italian restaraunt very near the hotel. If you are facing the Mayfair it is just a few places on the left. You walk downstairs to get to it. Little italian statue guy outside. Really good food. Best chicken parm ever! Kinda pricy, about $22 a plate, but well worth it.

Mayfair was perfect for my needs.
Single Working Male Nov 28, 2009
I booked a last second flight and hotel to see the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and picked the Mayfair because I had ... stayed 2 doors down at the much more expensive Time Hotel. I knew the area and new that all I'd be doing in my room was sleeping and showering. The room was tiny but that's NYC for you. It had a nice sized bathroom with a roomy tub. The double bed barely fit it is place but walking around the room was easy. TV,Ironing Board and iron, full length mirror, free Wi-Fi and a window overlooking a "pigeon sanctuary" was all included in the tiny room. What else does a single guy on a job need. !!HOT WATER!! I have never experienced a place with water as hot as the Mayfair. Instantly scalding! Be careful! Shower faucet had a neat thermometer built in and the needle zoomed past 150 degrees! That's illegal, I think. Overall, a good place. For the price. $20-50 more a night I would have been let down. Airfare less than 500 miles and 2 nights stay for $530.

Puttenesca! was a great restaurant. I had my dinner at the bar. I was going to get a Calamari app until the bartender suggested the Octopus Crostini. Unbelievable! The staff there was like a fun loving bunch of friends and it made sitting at the bar alone into a great time. Great wine, bread and Puttenesca too.

The location was worth the run down quality of this oder hotel. The room was clean but quite small. Traveling as a single ... made it do-able. No way to moderate the heat. The bed desperately needed a new matress. Would do again for a one night stay but no more than that.

Charming
Laurie Nov 16, 2009
The Mayfair is a charming old world hotel with an excellent location! The room was very small but perfectly adequate for the ... small amount of time we actually spent in it. It was very clean, charmingly decorated in a style that took you back to the 30 and 40s. The bathroom was equally small but the shower a masterpiece, with a strong spray and shower heads on opposite walls to relax the sorest muscles after a long day exploring the city. You couldn't possibly ask for a better location, just a half a block off Broadway in the center of Times Square! This hotel is for people who are looking for a wonderful bargain, tons of charm, and just the basics. The only problem we had was the room was very warm. We visited in the middle of an unseasonably warm November. The heat was turned on in the building and the air handlers couldn't manage to cool the room. If I could make one suggestion to the hotel it would be to offer coffee and tea in the lobby. There are many conveniently located coffee shops very close to the hotel but it would have been nice to run to the lobby in the morning without braving the outdoors at an early hour.

At the present time - Sept. 09 - the South Ferry subway station is closed for renovations, so that to reach Battery Park from the 49th St area you need to take Line 1 from 50th St., change at Times Sq. to Line 2 or 3, then exit at Chambers St. and take a free shuttle bus. We were lucky the train we were on had an announcer who spoke very clearly so we knew what to do, but on the trains we changed to this was not the case and the drivers spoke too quietly, too quickly, or mumbled.
