Value for Money
Perfect location, if not abit loud but it is in middle of a city that doesn't sleep so to be expected...rooms were clean and cleaned daily, very basic but what else do you need from a budget hotel apart from a bed and bathroom...free wifi which was fully working and staff were always helpful. Food & Drink outlets attached to the hotel and food permitted in the rooms. All in all for the money you pay it's a great hotel, yes it's cheap but we had more money for sightseeing and attractions which to us was more important...Would recommend!

Great Experience at the Hotel Penn
There are a lot of negative reviews on the Web site about the hotel - I don't see why. The staff was extremely helpful and pleasant, the rooms were clean and comfortable, and the location was fantastic. The rooms aren't terrible like others have stated. At worst, I would describe them as "sparsely decorated." One minor complaint: the Web site advertised that the hotel has a heated pool. They do not. They offer a discount to go swimming at the Bally's nearby.

Second Time NYC Tourist
Excellent location at an unbeatable price!
This hotel was the best value we could find. Cheap and in a perfect location. It was very easy to get to and from the airport. We took the air train from JFK to Jamaica Station to Penn Station and then just walked across the street to the hotel...can't beat that convenience. It was also within walking distance to Macy's, Times Square, Rockefeller, St. Patrick's and other places we wanted to see. The staff was friendly and helpful, especially when we had to hail a cab to go to the theatre at night. We had a view of Madison Square Garden from our room and you can also see Macy's from the windows near the elevators. The room is not the biggest and most luxurious room we have ever stayed in, but it does not matter since we were out and about most of the day anyway. As long as we had a clean bed and hot water (which we always did), we were happy!

Cheap room for the location
Room 410 is right next to the elevator shafts....extremely loud alllll night long so there was not much good sleep, even with ear plugs. the room was very run down and dirty, although the bed seemed clean enough. But for the location, the price is fairly low. when in New York City, who spends time in the hotel room anyway?

Location, Location Location
This Hotel is all about the location. It is right opposite Madison Sq gardens and close to the main subway stations. If you just want somewhere to sleep when exploring NYC and not that fussed about the accommodation then this is fine. The hotel is old and the decor is dated, we did have trouble with hot water but if your up early enough this is not an issue (we had an engineer look at it in about 15 min). Bed was a bit small but comfortable, we had a Tv with about 30 channels, and we also had free WifI in our room (level 4, but higher levels might not get it). We did hear a bit of road noise from the avenue below but still slept well as we where very tired from the days events. Overall we did not have any major problems and the staff were always willing to help.

cheap hotel
the one good thing about the hotel was the location close to every thing. hotel its self very tired needs so much to bring it up to a 2 star. the bedding was clean and the towels changed every day. the cleaning staff very pleasent. No trouble booking in but it seams a bit like a railway waiting room as so many people just waiting around. would not go again as looked around area and found very nice hotels much cheaper.bit dissapointd with the whole experance.

no-nonsense, great value, historical hotel
You stay here because 1) you need a clean, comfortable bed in a no-nonsense hotel; 2) you love the history of a hotel built in 1918 with the original internal room doors, it's name in a jazz song and you're amazed it's still going; 3) you can't beat the convenience of the location -- fly into Newark and get the train to the front door for $12.50. You don't stay here if 1) you insist on the latest trendy shampoos in the bathroom, and you object to old (but clean) sanitary ware; 2) you spend a lot of time in your room and you'll find a small room claustrophobic, but then why on earth are you in New York City? 3) you get upset if the electrical sockets are in an inconvenient place and you have to have room service (in which case, please leave New York City and let someone else take your place). This hotel is great value, perfectly pleasant, oozing charm and history and for everything else you need get out into the city and find it.
