Enjoyed Our Stay

We just returned from a 5-night stay at the Hotel Belleclaire. We had room 614, which was small (as most NYC hotel rooms are) and had no real view, but was comfortable. We heard no street noise except for the occasional siren. The location is wonderful, and the staff is exceptionally nice. Other than the small size of the room, the only other issue was that we learned on night one that the water takes an extraordinarily long time to run hot in the shower. After a visit and explanation by maintenance, we were told the water must run for quite some time before it gets hot, so we adjusted and started turning it on about 15 minutes before showering. Waste of water, but it worked. We also had no tub, but I take responsibility for the for not asking about it in advance. The hotel is on 77th, and there are subway stations on Broadway at 72nd (has express trains) and 79th, so that was very convenient. $31 gets you an unltd. 7-day ticket. All-in-all, we had a wonderful stay and plan to come back to this hotel and the friendly people who work there!

2 mishaps

Very fine for the price point -- with two exceptions. 1) The A/C unit was much too noisy. We didn't notify the front desk. 2) Around 8:00 am, we lost all power in the room. We had to go down to the lobby to notify the front desk. To the hotel's credit, power was restored within 5 minutes. We might try the hotel again but would not recommend it to a friend based on the problems encountered on this trip.

Ideal for exploring Manhatten

Staff were all friendly and very helpful. Hotel is situated just off Broadway, with Subways running from 72nd and 79th Street close by. If you prefer to walk then Times Square is about 25 mins away. Central Park and the Hudson River can be walked to in 10 mins. Room was a good size, comfortable and kept clean with en-suite facilities. The only thing lacking was the ability to make a hot drink in your room, but there is a good 24 hr cafe with in a minutes walk of the hotel. Air condition unit was effective but noisy, but the room itself was away from external sounds and when the AC unit was off it was largely silent.

Sightseeing tip: Long walk from hotel

We took a tour of the City on cycles. The cycles were hired locally next to the Hudson River and you could have a guide to travel with you to give local knowledge. To see the sights this way was fantastic. If you get the chance to ride over Brooklyn Bridge then do it

Stay of 6 nights

Very disappointed with room allocated to us for the 1st night - very noisy, and the bathroom looked dated. Staff moved us with no problem for the remainder of the stay with a room higher up and on West 77th. Minor niggles with door lock and taps, but these were sorted straight away.

Small rooms, great location

Yes, the rooms are small, but that's NYC. How much time should you be spending in your room, anyway! We got free WiFi, which is fabulous, and you can't beat the location. Very quiet, with a really nice lobby, friendly, accommodating staff. Great value! Would definitely stay here again.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Two places to try within an easy walk of the Bellclaire: Red Farm across the street has amazing dim sum (the soup dumplings are esepcially good!) and Toloni, a global tapas and wine bar on Amsterdam between 79th and 80th. Go! Also, the Westside Market beside the hotel on Broadway has fabulous take out food, etc. for late-night needs and a quick, cheap meal.

Good for Upper West Side

We picked the Belleclaire (as part of a package) because we had things to do on the Upper West Side. We wound up easy walking distance from our destinations, from pretty good restaurants and from Central Park. The room was New York small, with no view, but clean: The staff was uniformly friendly and helpful. If your business is is this part of Manhattan, this is a fine value.
