Much better than expected
My midwestern friend was very doubtful when I told her we would be sharing a bathroom but the cleanliness and convenience of Hotel 17 won her over. Luckily our comfortable room was right across from the bathroom so we could easily access its availability and yet hallway noises were not a problem. I couldn't have been more pleased but my late-rising daughter experienced a cold shower or two. We met lots of interesting international visitors in the quaint elevator, too. I'll stay again.

Money-saving tip:
Short walk from hotel
There are many thrifty breakfast spots on the way to Union Square and from there you can take the subway anywhere. We bought the $29 7-day limitless subway pass and travelled the town.

can't beat the price in this location
The location in the Gramercy district is unbeatable, within walking distance of so much of the best of lower Manhattan. The hotel is quite old (it's a vintage hotel in NYC) but is fairly well kept and has its charms - some rooms have been updated more recently than others, but all are clean. There was never any wait for the shared bathrooms. There was an unfortunate incident with the gas supply to the building, which meant a cold shower was all that was available the day I was there. That was really the only issue from the stay, and the price can't be beat, especially for the location.

Great value for a NY city hotel
I came to New York for the 5 Boros Bike Tour this May. I didn't need a fancy hotel with a big lobby ,marble floors and staff running all over the place. What I did need was a hotel in a good location, that is clean,in a neighborhood that I feel safe in, and at a reasonable price. My room was spotless. The building is well kept and has character. The staff at Hotel 17 delivered all that for me.

First visit to NYC
It was unique. The hotel was unusual for me, as I had never stayed in a European style hotel before, with a shared bathroom. But it wasn't what I thought it would be. The shared, or I would sa ycommon, bathrooms on the hall were not like communal showers and bathrooms, like in a colllege dorm. That is what I was expecrting. They were like your own bathroom at home, so you could have complete privacy. Its location turned out to be really great for my needs. I was able to walk to a subway station within a few minutes. It also had a couple of rather nice local eateries on the same block. I will probably stay there on my next visit, whenever that might be.

There are a couple of good places to eat, and not too badly priced either, The Gramercy Cafe and Mumbles. I would recommend them both.

Only Location
the only thing that really bothered me was the service! they were rude and they didn't value you as a customer or a guest. the way the act is as they do not want you to be there and they are doing you a favor by having you stay at their old and ugly hotel !

Nice place.
It's a nice looking place. For what I paid in NYC, I'm completely satisfied. (I had only a shared bathroom, but this was not a problem.)

Nothing fancy but clean, safe and in an excellent location plus competent staff
The best thing about this hotel is the excellent location in a nice neighborhood of historic rowhouses. It's within easy walking distance to an ecclectic variety of cafe's and good restaurants--especially Pete's Tavern and Bar Jamon. If you are taking the Bolt or MegaBus this is within walking distance or a short cab ride away. However, this is definitely not a fancy or trendy hotel--there are no high thread count sheets or modern decor. It's also an old building so the room configurations are peculiar and all different --I've stayed 3 times and never had the same looking room. There is also a dizzying array of mismatched patterned wallpaper and dark wood trim . However the rooms and shared bathrooms are clean and well maintained and the staff is competent. An excellent choice for a trip to NYC.
