Like being in the military again...

...except not as clean and with one toilet and one shower for an entire floor of women. It wasn't easy having to hustle to the elevator in the middle of the night to use the bathroom because some girl was tying up the ONE bathroom on my floor seemingly endlessly. Having a female's bathroom the size of a closet for an entire floor is ridiculous, especially when the men's restroom looked to accommodate more than one person at a time. I believe I paid about $80 a night, which seems a little outrageous considering I've paid less than $20 a night at a hostel in Europe that was cleaner and with better facilities.

Needs a lot of improvement

It needs a lot of maintainance and renovations. There needs to be more private bathrooms and regular room service.

Great for people who are not millionairs

The Harlem YMCA was a good & somewhat affordable place to crash for a few nights. It's a 3 minute walk to the subway station (134 st?) It's also right near an IHOP for breakfasts. My room was on the 135th St side, so was a tad noisy at night. For a quiter room, next time I'd ask to be on the back end of the building. That would put you above a secondary road instead, The a/c was still in the window so it was drafty. If I didn't have back issues, I probably would have yanked it out. I was chilly at night due to the cold air coming in. The room supplied sheets & a light weight blanket, but I was still cold. The bathrooms were fine, always kept nice & clean. I had plenty of hot water for showering. around 9am orso. It's a little daunting to see a dispenser for used needles though. However, we're not in Kansas anymore Dorothy! I found the staff to be great, they all made my stay enjoyable. There is a room for free wifi if your interested. They also offer computers for those like me who are technologically challened. It costs $2 for like 20 minutes or something. That worked out well. All in all it was a good place to stay in NYC for around $80 a night. I didn't get a chance to see the health club side. There is just too much to cram into a weekend in the Big Apple. I will stay there again, as It would be cool to see more of Harlem in general.

Harlem YMCA

This is a hostel, not a hotel, but I was happy with my experience there. It's true that you must share bathroom/shower facilities, and the rooms are very basic, but the price can't be beat. My floor had 3 bathrooms which each had a shower, toilet, and sink. One person in each at a time. Cleanliness of the showers and toilets depends on who happens to be on your floor. Mine was decently clean. The water pressure and heat could have been better, but it was adequate. Every day I got a fresh towel and they made my bed. Each room has a fridge, a/c, desk, chair, trash can, and bed with thin blanket, sheets and basic pillow. My floor had a soda vending machine and microwave. The staff was extraordinarily friendly. One of them even called me by my first name every day. Someone is at the security desk monitoring the building's surveillance videos 24/7. The exercise facilities are surprisingly nice, much nicer than the room accommodations would suggest. There's a computer lab with a dozen or so PC's running windows, though Flash was not available which limited the browsing of some websites (not a big deal, just no google maps street view). The YMCA is half a block from the 2 and 3 subway lines (walk east to Lennox/Macolm X Blvd), and 3 blocks from the A, B, and C (walk west to St Nicholas Ave). For La Guardia airport access, the M60 bus stops at 125 and Lennox which is an easy walk to the YMCA during the day, even with luggage on wheels. But if you like, you can take the subway between 125 and 135 which would take about the same amount of time as walking. Your subway pass will work on the buses, or you can pay in quarters ($2.25 for the M60 to/from La Guardia). The streets near the YMCA are very busy during the day, so safety is not a huge concern, though things may be different at night. Still, it's NYC, and anything could happen. (I almost got mugged in an expensive neighborhood, but never had any problems in Harlem.) Just keep to yourself and try not to appear like a tourist. If I had more money, I'd choose to stay at a hotel in a nicer neighborhood, but on my current budget, the Harlem YMCA suited my needs perfectly.

Very good experience

After booking for the 1st time we were very very skeptical about the cleanliness and the location. But the area was very safe and the rooms and bathrooms were very clean. We were very surprised. The Staff was very friendly and helpful! I would recommend the YMCA to any travelers that are on a budget and don't mind sharing a bathroom.

unpleasant

I did not like this hotel at all. Everything looks very dirty and old, a lot of things broken, the hallways smell bad. It was a terrible time there, I wish I had never been there. 0% recommendable.
