if you want your clothes stollen

I turned up really tired (from UK) and was immediately concerned about the safety of my belongings in the 8 person dorm. I expressed this to a member of staff, who reassured me that no baggage had been stolen since he'd been working there. Let me point out - They have no lockers, and no luggage facility!!! well - low and behold! - my clothes were stolen! I was more than upset! The only good thing about the hotel is the location. The staff were unhelpful, the rooms horrible (noisy, dirty, inhabited by rough looking guys in their 50's - and subsequently thieves!!, the wifi was also a waste of time - cutting off every minute). So with that in mind why stay here unless you are an opportunist thief or boarder-line homeless! Just pay more and enjoy staying somewhere safe and secure, I'd think twice staying here for free!:(

Dorms are for students

The Gershwin was a decent price if you're looking for a safe and convenient location. It has a lovely coffee shop where you can get great hot cocoa and a variety of breakfast foods. The hotel staff was pleasant (including when I called the day before my arrival to let them know I'd be checking in quite late at night.) There was a small room for internet access as well as a cute library area that overlooks the coffee shop if you want to hang out with friends/read, etc. I stayed in one of their dorms and sort of knew what to expect based on the reviews but I went for it for the above reasons. I wouldn't do it again. I think the very squeaky bunk beds, thin walls, and the shared bathroom is fine if you're under 25. But I'm not. I'd likely pay more for privacy, a place to sit in my room that's not the bed, amenities like a tv, coffee, towels, etc. The blankets were thin so I was freezing for much of the night despite snagging an extra blanket from an empty bunk. And while there is wi-fi, I wasn't able to get online.

Good location but overpriced dorm room

The location is good and the staff is friendly enough. Good cafe. Stayed in one of the dorm rooms, 4 bunk beds 8 people, expecting only two bunk beds with four people. Obviously, It was crowded when everyone was in the room. However, it was OK for laying my head down for 8 hours and a mid-afternoon nap to get refreshed for the evening. It was overpriced but hey that's the "Big Apple". Also, bring a towel because they charge extra if you want one. Anyhow, it was the best deal available for my weekend getaway to go to some Mets games, a Broadway play and a little nightlife. It served my purpose. Just don't expect too much.

Nice street & farmers market at Madison Square Park which is a couple of blocks south of the hotel. A real taste of old New York.

Good value for student travellers

I was on spring break and wanted to see NY without spending too much on a hotel. I stayed in a dormitory. There were 5 other people with me, mostly European travelers. One bathroom. I think it is a good place to stay in NY if you plan to walk around a lot and not care much about comfort. The staff is helpful.

Dormatory living for a 67 senior handicap individual!

Staff was unable to provide me appropriate accommodations purchased, the single room with a shared bath! Dormitory room provided me was very clean, no closet but nice clean bunk beads, with one large clean bath room. Towels $6.00 extra! International room mates, Germany, Denmark, France, UK, and me, USA. Room mates came in staggered till mid night but very professional and polite and keeping the place clean and organized by placing their back packs under or in bunk beds and short use of bath room keeping it clean. Everyone offered me help running my lifesaving dialysis machine!

recent weekend in NYC

The Gershwin's location is perfect for a weekend getaway - right in the heart of midtown. The lobby and corridors are bursts of color and whimsical art, although the rooms - perhaps meant to soothe - are a fairly basic beige. At least ours was. Spotlessly clean too. The elevators are very slow, which is our only complaint.

Needs Work

Subjectively: The Gershwin is like a love child spawned by an IKEA and a Salvation Army...given up for adoption to be raised by an American art professor. The decor was interesting but slapped together. I didn't mind the experience, but those who are less tolerant should consider the following... Objectively: The water temperature never stayed consistent...and the last day of my visit was TOTALLY OUT. No water in the room or downstairs at the coffee shop. Objectively: The elevator was intermittently functional throughout my visit...but there was always a note saying that assistance was available should it be required. All in all, this place wasn't terrible...but it certainly needed work.
