Nightlife tip: Short walk from hotel

Shops near the hotel close at 10 p.m. but further downtown and east of the hotel (within walking distance) are medium budget restaurants & bars.,

Simple elegance

This is a very clean hotel with a helpfull staff. There arent many thrills and the rooms are small but it is a nice place in a great location. The rooftop garden is a good place to meet before going out. or unwind at the end of the evening. This hotel had one of the best prices and it is worth more. The room size would be an issue if you bring a LOT of luggage for a longer stay.

The front desk helped me find a parking garage 1.5 blocks away. It cost $40 for a 24 hour stay. This is the regular rate in NYC. It makes it easier to bring your car when you know parking is close.

A little oasis

I stayed at the GEM for one night during a business trip. The room was great - it even had a view of the Empire State Building. The staff was wonderful. The entire hotel - lobby, hallways, rooms - had a very soothing feel to it. Once you stepped in, you stepped out of the NYC craze, and that was really nice. I expected a very small room based on other reviews and while it was small, it wasn't any smaller than any other hotel I've stayed in in New York. The neighborhood was fantastic. I wish I'd had more time to enjoy it. I would definitely stay here again.

mini-room

The hotel itself seemed secure and lobby and services were professional. However, the room seemed made for a midget. The room was much too small and the shelf-sized desk, wardrobe closet and amenities were squeezed into the space. There was no bathtub-only a shower and the hair dryer was hanging in a labeled bag from the bathroom wall. I felt lucky this was a short stay.

well-located, clean, & safe

GEM Hotel was modern, clean, and well-located. The lobby's dark and the room's are small (but who cares, really?) just pack your conditioner - the hotel only supplies a 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner.

GEM in NY

Small but adequate room. Wonderful location. Easy on street parking in the area, no need to pay for garage parking over the weekend. Very good deal for the price.

NYC for Christmas 2010

The hotel is very clean and nice. Perfect for a single person traveling. The rooms are small but for just sleeping while enjoying the city it was perfect. Price was excellent. Location was great, one block for the subway, made it easy to get around the city. Went to the Guggenheim, saw some Broadway and Off-Broadway Shows. Caught a holiday cabaret show. Dinner with friends in the city. Overall a great 4 day stay.
