Very nice hotel in an excellent location on the Upper West Side, away from the crowds of Midtown, but only a few subway stops ... or a short bus ride away. Restaurants and shops on Columbus, Amsterdam and Broadway are numerous and uniformly very good.

THE EXCELSIOR IS IN A NICE NEIGHBORHOOD LOCATION AND IS QUIET AND RESTFUL. THE SUBWAY IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER OR YOU CAN ... CATCH THE BUS JUST DOWN THE BLOCK. THE VIEW OF THE PARK WAS LOVELY. THE STAFF WERE ALL BUSINESS AND DID NOT LAUGH AND JOKE LIKE WE DID BUT WE WERE NOT OFFENDED BY THAT - WE JUST THOUGHT IT ODD THAT THEY DIDN'T RESPOND TO ANYTHING FUNNY. THERE IS A RESTAURANT IN THE HOTEL BUT WE LIKED TO GO DOWNTOWN TO MINGLE WITH THE NEW YORK CROWDS. WE WERE VERY PLEASED WITH THE HOTEL AND WOULD GO BACK.

Lovely Upper West Side Delight
Visiting College Mom Nov 9, 2009
I was visiting my daughter at College. I was a bit familiar with midtown, but found this hotel and thought I'd try the Upper ... West Side. What a wonderful experience. I had my 70 y/o Mother with me and she was in heaven. We had a suite for the same price as a room anywhere else. The staff was dear and we loved the area. You could get anywhere because the subway was less than a block away. Natural Histoy museum was a few steps away and we had a great afternoon there listening to my daughter show off all she has been learning in school!! There is an adorable park accross the street and the people we met were the nicest I have ever encountered travelling. The Excelsior is a fantastic option.

Try the fabulous vegan and regular fare at Josie's at Amsterdam and 74th. Great drinks and my sister the food writer loved it. Citron Bistro has awesome Mussels and turf. Subway less than a block away--but you may not want to leave the neighborhood. The hotel's restaraunt Eighty-One was low key and delicious. All whom we met in the area were just the best!Starbucks less than a block away.

We love to eat at the Central Park Boathouse. If it's crowded and you can't get into the dining room, order food at the counter in the room to the right of the bar and sit in back of the regular dining room. The roast beef sandwich and fries are very good, and you still get that great view.

I don't know what the bell-hop was for, between two people we had 4 suitcases all the bell-hop did was put our luggage on a ... luggage dolly inside the hotel and left, we had to take the rest to our room. When my husband and I got to our room there were 2 double beds instead of the queen bed I thought I was paying for. When I called the front desk she said when reserving a room from anywhere but at the hotel the bed type is merely just a suggestion and that all the other queen beds were taken. The heater worked too well in our room, in that it would not shut off and was incredibly loud. Also the cable was spliced between hotel rooms so most channels were very fuzzy that is if they came in at all. The second day we stayed there my husband took a very cold shower because they seemed to have run out of hot water that morning. The hotel was the worst part of the trip thankfully we spent little time there. The only good thing about this hotel was that it was within walking distance of everything without having to be in the middle of it all.

Our favorite NY hotel
Kasey Nov 8, 2009
Because we love Central Park and the UWS, the location is perfect for us. Subway stops and good restaurants are close by, ... but it's a quiet and classy area. We like to walk, so the location is not too far north for us to walk to the theater, although perhaps not many would want to do that. Our room was not large, but so cozy and comfortable, with a great view of Theodore Roosevelt Park; we loved coming home to it at night. The room and bathroom (great shower, comfortable beds) are beautifully decorated--and spotlessly maintained. The guy at check-in wasn't too friendly, but everyone else was. We visit NYC every year and have stayed in many hotels which were fine, but this was our favorite and we hope to stay there on our next trips to the city.

From the moment we arrived late Friday night and were upgraded to a suite (sweet!), I knew that the Excelsior was a hotel ... treasure. The staff recommendations for breakfasts and dinner very good. I even forgot my iPhone cord at the hotel and they're shipping it to me! The location is excellent. Quiet, but so close to everything. I'd stay here again - anytime.

College BFF Sep 22, 2009
Great location for seeing the Upper West side and for enjoying/exploring Central Park. Very convenient to public ... transportation and easy walk to Columbus Circle and Times Square. great neighborhood restaurants and incredibly quiet at night, very different from Hell's Kitchen/Broadway/Mid town hotels. Room was exquisitely outfitted, service was exception. Will definitely stay here again on future visits and will recommend to friends/family.

wedding guest Sep 20, 2009
I'm not sure what the original room would have been because we were given a complimentary upgrade to the most elegant NYC ... room we'd ever seen--two huge rooms! Large living room with hide-a-bed and huge bed room. The bed was not the best we'd ever slept on but it was certainly good enough and the location, mostly the charm of an older but perfectly kept up and immaculate hotel with a nice enough restaurant (the breakfast is overpriced but there are so many others near by that it matters not at all) were just too wonderful to be true in NYC for such a reasonable price. It was wonderful!! one of the highlights of our son's wedding weekend! Incredibly comfortable and pleasant.

It was very nice. However, when we arrived the room was hot. I turned the AC on, but the knob was broken. My wife figured it ... out. The AC was on when the knob was in off position. Afterwards, the climate control was adequate. We loved our stay and would return to same hotel when back in NYC as long as price is reasonable.

The hotel was close to Central Park and had easy access to the subway. We enjoyed walking across the street to the Museum of ... Natural History. There are several nice restaurants within a 5 minute walk. Across from the Museum of Natural History is a bus stop for a sightseeing tour which was a great way to see all of Manhattan. The hotel is situated directly across the from the Museum of Natural History and you can use their parking. Be sure to get ... it validated by the hotel. The hotel suited our needs which was a place to lay our heads. We hardly stayed in our room because we were having lots of fun in Manhattan which was a quick subway ride. The subway is nearby. Very convenient. The tour bus was nearby too. Breakfast and lunch was all within 1 block. There is no kitchen in the hotel. I got this hotel for the low price and away from all the city noise.

We were upgraded to a suite for our family of 4 which proved to make the stay in this hotel even better. The hotel is located ... across from the park that surrounds the Museum of Natural History so this was a wonderful view to take in every day. Left one-half block away is Central Park with a playground at its entrance as well as an easy walk to the MET and the rest of Museum row.

We were upgraded to a 1-bedroom suite which was very helpful with two children and two adults! This is a very kid-friendly ... neighbourhood; close to Central Park (lots of play areas) and across the street from the Museum of Natural History; subway station is a block away and we walked through the park -- played in Belvadere Castle -- to get to The Met Museum of Art. Never did find a good cheap breakfast place close by; this hotel would be perfect if it had a good, cheap breakfast. Cab rides are under well under $10 from Times Square/MoMA/5th Ave shopping and Lincoln Center is a long but doable walk away. We were walking in this neighbourhood quite late at night and felt very safe. Room was great; quiet with windows closed and air-conditioning worked like a dream (and was programmable!).

This hotel was excellent. The staff greeted us with ope arms and really took care of us. They had no problem taking ... pictures of us and everything. The decor of the lobby was gorgeous. The rooms were great as well. The view wasn't too great but they have a city view and a view of Central Park. We were facing apartments and houses in the back. It's a great experience. The rooms were clean and they straightened up the rooms well. Nothing was out of place. The bathrooms were very clean as well. As far as the location, Central Park is right in front of you. None of the cab rides were expensive. It's in a great location near just about everything. There are plenty of restaurants and diners in the area. Rockefeller Plaza wasn't far at all. Central Park Zoo is pretty small but is nearby and is a great quick spot to visit. PLEASE VISIT this spot!!!

Farm Boy Aug 5, 2009
Hotel is in a great location between Central Park West and Columbus. Cental Park was just a block away and is a beautiful ... park...better than a botanical garden and great waling paths! Location is a wonderful upper westside neighborhood with great restaurants and brownstones. We had a queen bed with an extra sitting area including a pull out couch so was a much bigger space than expected. Bath was small but very clean and quaint with all tile walls and nice touches amd great water pressure in the shower! Room did not have a view but after sightseeing all day did not matter! Staff was efficient but not that friendly...did not make you feel welcome or give you any details about the hotel or the neighborhood. Loved NYC!

Excelsior Hotel and Area
Jeanne from Philly Aug 3, 2009
I booked this hotel based solely on the previous reviews I had read and was not disappointed. A friend and I stayed here not ... really being familiar with the location and were pleasantly surprised to find it was located directly across the street from the Museum of Natural Science and close to Central Park. The room was small with two twin beds but was clean as was the bathroom. We were only there for one night but found the staff that we interacted with to be polite and helpful. We ate breakfast at EJs as another reviewer had recommended and were not disappointed! Would also recommend eating at Sarabeth's and Nonna's in the neighborhood. Overall we had a great time in NY and would recommend the Excelsior Hotel. We would stay there again in the future.

We were able to park for about 24 hours in the Museum of Natural History's underground parking garage for about $26 - you need to show your parking stub at the time of checkout to get a sticker but it saved us about $12! Well worth it.
