Great Tourist Location

Rooms are small but clean and quiet. Staff very helpful. Great location for a New York visit. Accross from Museum of Nat. History and Central Park; subway and bus stops on corne; lots of neighborhood restaurants; coffee shops and a deli on every corner. This was our first visit to New York and we were very pleased with the Excelsior

Visiting Columbia University

Our family was visiting Columbia University. Despite our unexpected late arrival, the staff was helpful and courteous. The room was nicer than I had hoped and the neighborhood was a perfect place to stay; safe to walk around at night. At the last moment, my daughter was able to join us, and the staff found a room larger. They did this quickly and cheerfully. The Excelsior was also a great buy. Finally,I am overly concerned with cleanliness when stay in a hotel and the Excelsior was immaculate. We will absolutely stay here again.

Pretty hotel in great location

Even though the tiny twin-bedded room I shared with my daughter was expensive, and the location is great: on the Upper West Side around the corner from the Museum of Natural History and just a block from Central Park. The room was immaculate, and it looks like the entire hotel has recently been redone. The bath featured sparkling new ceramic tile and nice toiletries, and the beds had four (!) pillows each, two of which were luxurious linens. You can barely get around one of the beds to get to the good-sized closet which had a safe and plenty of hangers. The TV armoire had several drawers for storage. There is an ominous sign on the mini-bar which warns that you will be charged if you touch anything for more than 20 seconds, so no food storage in that refrigerator! One complaint is that there is no coffee pot in the room, and the continental breakfast is expensive, although I found out that you can purchase a cup of coffee for $2. The independent restaurant 81 and bar in the hotel are wonderful with delicious and imaginative food, much of which is organic or locally sourced, attentive service and a happening bar. The concierge is helpful and very friendly. There is a great craft fair in the park across the street from the hotel in the summer.

Just west of the hotel, Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues are filled with boutiques of all kinds and a wide variety of small restaurants and bars. It is fun to just walk around and explore.

My review of Excelsior Hotel

The Excelsior Hotel in New York City was very comfortable, clean well maintained. Located within a five-ten minute, safe, walking distance from subways, buses, Central Park, and several eating and drinking places. Parking is a major problem, the hotel has none. Parking is across the street at a major museum at a discount, 25.00 per day, and no in and out. My only complaint is with the desk staff. Mainly the afternoon male. He is not friendly and acts like he is king. We asked a couple of questions and direction and it was like, who are you to ask me questions. He was snooty and almost rude to the point we did not deal with the desk staff again. The doorman was great and helpful.

You don,t need a car. Public transportation can take you anywhere and cabs are used mostly. Subways are safe and efficient.

Great hotel on t he Upper West Side

The Excelsior on W 81st Street near Central Park is ideal. Great neighborhood with wonderful shops and restaurants and very convenient to everything. I took a cab to 44th Street for a Broadway show and it only took a few minutes to get there. Walking in Central Park is a treat and it's fast easy to cut through to the East side and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The hotel is small and elegant. The rooms are average-sized but very nicely appointed. If you want a great hotel in a wonderful, convenient and non touristy location, the Excelsior is for you. This one is a keeper!

Pleasant surprise

I was very surprised by the size of the room, considering it was in NYC (typically tiny and cramped)The room was clean, the beds comfortable, the bathroom large, light and well stocked with toiletries. I wish the windows had screens and there had been one of those handy small grocery stores that one usually finds around the corner. The food in the dining room was excellent but rather pricey. However, the location was great, right across from the park, a short walk to the subway and Natural History Museum. The staff was very helpful and the lobby, very inviting and comfortable. I would definitely stay at the Excelsior again.

Natural History was a few minutes away. It may be my new favorite museum in NYC. We went on a tour and had the best docent I've encountered. Central Park is right across the street and there were many small shops in the area.

Location Location

We were quite pleased with our stay at the Excelsior. It was half a block from Central Park and the subway. It was very easy to reach other destinations on the subway or by taxi. There were dining options nearby (especially Sarabeth's). The staff were cordial and efficient. The room was of adequate size and comfortable. The bedspread was too heavy and could readily be replaced with a lighter but as warm down comforter. All things considered, we had a great 5 day visit to New York and the Excelsior was a major factor in making our visit memorable.
