Not a good place to stay

This hotel was in a neighborhood near nothing of interest. It was terribly maintained: the there was no a.c. in my bedroom, light bulbs were missing, the tv was located in a cabinet that did not face the bed--you couldn't look at it from the bed and there was no chair. The next day I moved to another room. Again, missing or burned out light bulbs and a lamps stand disconnected from the plug, which was behind the bed and inaccessible until a maintenance man came up and moved the bed; the public TV channel was blurred and filled with lines. Also, wireless connectivity cost $19.95 a night, and was the only access available to Internet. The rooms were dingy; the bathtub so used looking I didn't want to use it. I found the dishwasher in the kitchenette running at 6 a.m., stuck on Dry, and I hadn't even turned it on--and the dishes in it were still wet so it wasn't even drying! When I wrote a note that the dishwasher wasn't working and gave it to the man at the front desk, he couldn't have seemed less interested, and it was still sitting there on the counter 15 minutes later. I would NEVER go to this hotel again.

Run Down Hotel

The hotel was poorly run and basically check in was slow and inefficient. The rooms were poorly maintained (Air Conditioning did not work, so they had a large portable unit put in a small room with no room to walk in. The manager did upgrade me to a room that was barely adequate, but only after my insistence that the room was neither clean nor adequate to stay in. Her explanation was that this hotel is old and is in need of repair.

HORRIBLE!

I DID NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL AFTER SEEING THE CONDITION OF THE ROOM, WHICH WAS NOT ACCEPTABLE! THE PULL OUT TWIN SIZED SOFA IN OUR "SUITE" WOULD NOT HAVE ACCOMMODATED A DOG! IT WAS STAINED AND FALLING APART AND WE HAD FOUR PEOPLE TO ACCOMMODATE, WHICH WAS NOT HAPPENING HERE! CALLED ORBITZ AND CANCELLED HOTEL AND FOUND MY OWN! WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT COMPARED TO THE PICTURES I LOOKED AT ON THE WEBSITE. I ALSO HAD CHECKED WITH THE HOTEL BEFORE ARRIVAL AND THEY SAID ALL THE SLEEPER SOFAS WERE NEW....NOT TRUE!

Great location, run down and not clean hotel

The Beekman hotel has a great location, close to the UN and within walking distance to MOMA. The bar roof terrace has great views, although the drinks are expensive (you pay for the view), and the food mediocre at best. However the apartment was not very clean, there was trash under the bed (a forgotten book, used tissues, bits of candy wraps), and dust all over the furniture. The bathrooms and the kitchen cleaning seemed to have been done with the same sponge/cloth, as there was hair everywhere when we first got to the room, and after the next morning cleaning. Stuff is friendly and courteous, but the hotel seems run down and in need of renovation(the bathroom ceiling, tub, walls had mold).

My review of Beekman Tower Hotel

The hotel is older and not near alot of the hot spots in New York. I walked to TImes Sq. and the hotel was about sevenor eight blocks away. During the day it was fine but at night I would not risk it. The room smelled as if someone had been smoking and the air conditioner only works in the front of the suite. The hotel dinner was closed in the evening so I found a place across the street to eat. The staff was fine and the price was the lowest I could find but I got what I paid for.

Tired Hotel, Inconvenient Location

I've come to trust the user evaluations of hotels much more than the "star" rating. In this case, however, I was disappointed. The Beekman Tower is an architecturally interesting property but hasn't been updated since the '60's or '70's. I didn't mind the dated appearance so much but the carpet was stained and the bed was AWFUL. The location, near the UN, is somewhat inconvenient for business as it's a 15-20 minute walk to Park Avenue/Grand Central and there isn't much in the way of obvious restaurant alternatives. It appears that the hotel is a sister property to The Surrey, which has been marvelously updated, so perhaps there's hope.

Faded glory

I arrived at the hotel to find the lobby a little out dated - the deco era shine is worn thin. The front desk staff was very nice, and greeted me warmly. Unfortunately when I got off the elevator the smell of cigarette smoke was over powering, and the hallway was dingy, e.g. faded paint, threadbare carpet, dusty. The room wasn't much better. Although I escaped the smell of smoke, my green carpeted room was depressing. Large enough, with a pantry kitchen, but really it needs an overhaul. For a quick, one night in town with meetings just around the block, the hotel served its purpose - just. Next time I would stay much further away and travel to meeting so as not to stay at the Beekman Tower.

Average for NYC

Hotels in NYC are expensive, and they don't offer much in return. This hotel cost us about $215 per night (for 3 people), yet it is barely a two-star hotel. The rooms are not particularly clean, have some old tainted furniture, there is neither breakfast nor wifi included. But that's how the hotels in NYC are. Anywhere else, for the same price you would be staying in a 4-star or 5-star hotel. It is not because the rooms are more expensive in NYC - this hotel has 26 floors. Rather, it is because they can charge you all that money and you really don't have many other options. I wouldn't stay there again - it was too expensive for the quality. You can find similar quality for about 150 dollars in smaller hotels, and you can rent a small apartment for the same money (about $150 per day). But, it is not the worst option either, so if they give you a nice room on a higher floor you may end up with an excellent view of the city...

Three stars is right!

We definitely had a three star experience at this hotel. It was clean and had a decent price, and we were hardly there as we were out sight seeing every day. It was a 10-15 dollar cab ride to get anywhere in the vacinity we needed to go which was nice. The rooms are a bit out dated but we didn't really care about that. Had a bad plumbing experience and got a little surprise from our neighboring room which was a bit gross. Kitchen came with a fridge and a stove which was convenient. Maid came and tried to open our door several times each morning...annoying. The upstairs restaurant had a great view but was outrageously priced, even for New York standards. When we were leaving, the hotel offered a flat rate coach car to the airport which was great, and said tip was included. When the lady dropped us off, she told us tip was not included so we had to tip her just to make sure so someone wasn't telling up the correct information. Overall, for a place to crash while sightseeing its in a decent location, close to alot, and in a safe neighborhood. Hotel staff was friendly as well.

Money-saving tip: Long walk from hotel

Walking will save you money! Follow the street the hotel is on all the way to the heart of the city, (1 or 2 miles) and you are in the heart of most of the action. Walking to your destination while you have the energy will save you alot of money as cab rides tend to add up!
