Nice hotel, small rooms, even for NYC
Hotel was in nice location, few blocks from Times Square. The rooms were small but managed to seem more quaint than cramped. Dinner in the restuarant was hugely disappointing, very subpar food. We asked the waiter for bread (@!) as there was a bread plate, but he said they were "out." in a rather grumpy manner. Still left 20 percent tip but honestly it was a huge zero, food was average at best, service not great either. I guessed the server was disappointed that we did not order any wine/booze.

don't eat in the hotel restaurant. NYC has great dining all over the city--don't waste a meal here.

Hurricane Irene in New York at Algonquin Hotel---UGH!
Well, once Hurricane Irene struck the city, all transportation was shut down. Our reservations at the hotel ended Saturday night/check out Sunday morning. Of course our flight was cancelled for the return to Florida since the airports were all shut down. We asked the front desk person about additional nights until our next available flight home since we were still in the middle of the storm and the NYC mayor had told people to stay inside. The answer we got was "sorry, we are full--you will have to leave" There was no offer of assistance to find another room (within walking distance since no transportation was available, nor within any distance for that matter) We were left on our own, to find a place not knowing the city, we ended up finding a place on our own after hours of searching the net, had to walk to it in the middle of the storm carrying all of our bags. The hotel staff offered no help at all. I would recommend sleeping on a park bench before I would recommend the Algonquin hotel to anyone. By the way, the staff wasn't even smart enough to figure out that they probably weren't going to be full because all flights into NY were also cancelled due to the storm. At any rate we had to move between two more hotels before leaving NYC, both of which were nicer hotels and had Friendly Courteous Staff. I would definitely recommend both the "Element" on 39th street and "Districkt" on 40th street. However, our first hotel the "Algonquin" on 44th street definitely sucked overall and made a trip that had many issues due to an unexpected hurricane even worse.

Pricey but fabulous and well worth it!
We had the best time at the Algonquin, a truly classic experience in midtown Manhattan. These were some of the quietest rooms I can imagine just off Times Square. The staff is impeccable and very helpful. I was with kids and would have loved a pool, but who had time, really? We loved the "literary" style and history at the hotel. The complimentary bottles of water in our room every day, the free coffee service in the am and afternoon and the iced tea at 4 pm in the lobby were a nice bonus. When our suite had to be changed to two full sized guest rooms, complimentary cocktails and full breakfasts MORE than made up for any surprise. I think, honestly, we liked it even more! I would definitely go back.

If you are planning on taking more than 4 round trip subway trips on your stay, buy a week long pass for $29. You will use it. You go to so many more places if you know you can hop on and off all subways and buses in the 5 boroughs!

Definitely coming back!
Perfect location at a great price. Beautiful lobby and decent sized rooms for New York City. Very comfortable bed. Very accommodating staff...made a few special requests and they didn't blink an eye to help us. One of our bags accidentally got left behind at checkout and they even paid for a private cab to bring it to us at the airport.

Fantastic family/friends getaway!
The Algonquin was the perfect location for us! We were within walking distance to dining, shopping and TImes Square! We walked to the subway and hopped on to the tip of Manhatten to enjoy the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. We Walked to the MoMA and Rockefeller Center and strolled blocks back home to the hotel, as we enjoyed shopping and food along the way. Our suite was awesome and provided privacy for all of us. The staff was extremely helpful at all times. I can't say enough good things about the Algonquin!! Thank you for insuring our delightful time in New York City!!

Short walk from hotel
Make sure to compare yellow taxi fares to other means of transportation from hotel to airport. Yellow taxi ended up being the most economic way for four of us to transport back to the airport. The Algonquin was a perfect walking distance to shopping, dining and TIMES SQUARE!

Great Stay!
This was our first trip to New York and the location was great. A couple blocks from Time Square, could walk to our Broadway show and right around the corner from good shopping. The staff were all friendly and the room, while not large, was nice and had everything we needed. We were six floors up and could still hear lots of noises from the street at night, but I hear that's not unusual. We didn't eat at the hotel because it was a little pricey, but tons of good places to eat within easy walking distance. Would stay here again and recommend it.

You just have to keep them honest!
Paid for a King room [...]. Checked in, unpacked and noticed that the bed was a smaller than a queen. Called the front desk and was told that they were sorry but they were all out of the king rooms due to faulty AC units. So they tried to sneak us into a smaller standard room and hoped we wouldn't notice? The offered us breakfast and drinks for the inconvenience. After a half hour I realized that the room wasn't getting cooler, despite the (in window) AC unit turned up for max cooling.Went downstairs to ask if they could look at it. They assured me that they would, and my wife & I went out for a late lunch. When we arrived 2 hours I asked at the desk if the AC was fixed, the clerk told me that maintenance didn't put in for a service call, so the AC should be working fine. The room was uncomfortably warm at this point. I went back down to demand that we be switched in to a room with a working AC. And they made the switch.Other than that our stay was fine. Of course they only served us half the breakfast we ordered despite repeated requests for our toast and side of fruit, but since it was "free" we didn't get upset.I'm guessing that this place has had a long slide downhill (and lost much standing) since Marriott took over.

Algonquin Did Not Disappoint
We stayed at the hotel for two nights to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. We selected the hotel for its history, inviting lobby and close proximity to Times Square, Rockefeller Center, etc. The location proved to be great and the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. For example, we arrived after 10:00 pm due to our plane being diverted and delayed, and the woman at reception recommended a great italian restaurant, Trattoria Dopo Teatro, in our price range just a few doors away. The hotel staff seemed to remember us over the course of our three days there. In two nights and three days, we saw a Broadway Play, attended a comedy club, had two great dinners, did a bit of shopping on fifth avenue, and utilized the subway. Very memorable trip.
