A MISERABLE NIGHT AT AFFINIA 50

We are very pleased to have the opportunity to tell you about our stay at the Affinia 50 Hotel in NYC. It was a nightmare. Starting with the little things: the hotel is under renovation, inside and out and the entire front of it is closed off with scaffolding and hanging tarps (so we have no idea what the hotel looks like). There is also construction and renovation going on inside the hotel. The hotel did not tell us about this in advance nor offer any reduced price for the inconvenience and unattractive setting. The air conditioning is apparently being redesigned (the standard unit in our room was non-functional, but there was a temporary unit installed high up on the wall and one could use a remote to regulate it, so that, we felt, was a minor problem. When we checked in at 3:00, we were in our room just 10 minutes to change clothes for our afternoon and evening activities with friends. During those few minutes we were surprised that a) the room had no window except 3 small panes across the top of the 10 or 12 foot high wall, so we could not see out. We decided not to complain about that, but we were not impressed. We also thought the air conditioner was making a lot of noise, and at dinner we reminded eachother that we would have to figure out how to turn it off with the remote when we got back to our room. When we did return (at 11:30 p.m.), we quickly realized that the noise was not from our air conditioner; instead the windowless wall was windowless because we were right up against the huge outdoor unit that is, we assume, the heating/cooling unit for the entire hotel. The noise was terrific, with a continuous roar. We didn't want to complain at 11:30 and we were tired, so we tried to tough it out. That roar was accompanied by a baning in our room unit that occured approximately every 12 minutes: bang, bang, bang, lasting about 3 minutes each time, adding much noise to the alreadky very noisy outdoor unit. In short, we did not get to sleep until 3:00 a.m., and had to get up at 6:00 a.m., so it was a really miserable night. When we went down to the desk to file a complaint about the noise and inconvenience, we began by telling the man behind the desk, that we did not want to express our anger to him but rather needed to talk to the manager. He said he was the manager, and so we filed our complaint with him, trying very hard to be polite. He responded by sahying we should have complained when we checked in and there was nothing he could do about it now. We suggested that we should receive a partial refund (note we did not ask for a full refund), and he said he would think about it. We told him that if his thinking about it resulted in no satisfaction for us, that we would write a very negative review of the hotel; we noted that we did not want to do that and assumed he didn't either. He responded by saying that if we were going to threaten him he would do nothing. In the end, wkhen we checked out at 10:00 a.m. he gave us a card for an upgrade on our next stay (which of course we would never do, since we will never return there, so the upgrade is useless to us) and said he would not/could not give us a partial refund. Subsequently, we called the hotel to tell them that one of us had left an expensive pair of shoes in the room (in our haste to get out of the closed in, loud room, we forgot the shoes) and we left a message asking for a return call; no such call was forthcoming. In all, then, this was a miserable experience with a rude manager (we can supply his name), and an untenable sleeping arrangement. We give the hotel a failing grade and our stay there an expensive, very unpleasant experience.

Affinian 50 Worst Stay ever

My friend and I arrived at the Affinia 50 for our NYC trip. The cab driver could not find the hotel as the entrance was a construction site. After making several calls, we found the hotel. Our room had a view of the construction workers who were nose to nose with us on the tenth floor. Also the room adjacent to ours was were the construction site office. Loud drilling noise started at 8 and proceeded until 5. The hotel would not accommodate a change, saying the noise could be heard throughout the hotel, so it would not be worth moving. No upgrades were offered for our inconvienience. DO NOT GO TO THIS HOTEL!

Great location

I was a bit apprehensive after booking this hotel, as the website noted it was being renovated. I went ahead with the booking, thinking we wouldn't be spending much time in the room anyway. (I traveled to NYC on a sightseeing trip with my teen/preteen kids.) We booked a studio suite, which didn't give us enough room for a rollaway as I had hoped, but nonetheless the room was spacious, and with two queen beds, we made it work. The kitchenette was compact but perfect for what we needed--just space to put breakfast items and leftovers. Renovation noises started about 8am, which turned out to be a good prompt for me to make it to the fitness center. Great equipment there, and never crowded. The room/hotel ended up being fine for what we needed--just a home base for our daily explorations. What really made the difference was the friendliness of the staff. Everyone was extremely pleasant, welcoming, and helpful. Kudos to a great team.

Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

We bought 7-day unlimited subway passes for $30 each and they were well worth the money. We never thought twice about hopping on the trains to go somewhere, and we saved a ton over the individual trip fees.

Great friendly hotel

We had a great week at the Affinia 50. It was comfortable, warm, quiet and relaxing. The staff were lovely and friendly and were always a help. The room was a good size and well equipped. I suppose the only negative ( and that is if I have to be really picky ) was that the fittings eg kitchen and bathroom and now a little tired. But overall would recommend this hotel for anybody.

Wonderful stay with family

This hotel has a wonderful location and is always so friendly. I'm a tough recommender so my score is a 4/5 due to the fact that there was no one there during the complimentary wine hour.

I hate to speak too highly of it due to fear of its growing popularity...but this hotel is amazing. My family and I, and now my fiancé and I, always have and always will stay here when in New York. It just doesn't get any better. Perfect location, easy access to subway and close proximity to amazing restaurants and shopping. Love love love. Also allows pets!

Just okay...

Arrived to a "double room, twin queen, suite" reservation. Got a single room, twin queen efficiency. When I asked about it the desk, since the dynamics of the visit were that the two of us sleep separately, I was informed that I did not understand booking terminology. Any changes would be " much more expense. Pro: room was okay, the beds very comfortable, plenty of hot water, incidental bar overly stocked. Con: long very brunette hairs in the bathroom, on the carpet and in the only chair ( double room?). Old dirty metal cabinets in tiny, poorly ventilated kitchen ( smell of natural gas) and the old cooking utensils sealed the deal on all meals out. Desk staff functional. No more. Door staff slightly and falsely over friendly. Tipping made them go away.

Affordable, Fabulous and Spacious - YES, in NYC

I always enjoy my stay at the Affinia's. It's like home away from home. You're greeted and welcomed at the door. Staff is friendly. The only sad part on this stay was opening the door to my room and not hearing my kids scream "daddy's home." But that's not Affinia's fault. Next time will be different. The room was huge and I had two flat screen t.v's. I am bringing the family next time - plenty of space.
