OK for a quick stay

The hotel was decent and clean enough for a quick stay. The hotel was right off the highway and next to a cemetery. We picked to stay here because there was a parking lot but the parking lot was much smaller than expected. It was impossible to get a spot in the parking lot on most days and the staff told us to find street parking...kind of defeating the purpose of staying there. We only saw one person working the front desk the whole time.

Good low-budget option

Before listing any complaints, I must say that we would stay there again because it was acceptably clean and had a good location. The price we paid would get us a 4-star hotel in the area we live, but this was NYC. The room smelled like a combination of stale smoke and mold. The breakfast was OK but the area was much too small. There were 5 tables for a 3-story hotel. They ran out of some items, but it was possible to get toast or a bagel if everything else was gone. The staff had poor customer service skills. We waited over 45 minutes in an un-air conditioned lobby to check in. One person ahead of us asked about parking and was told that she could just "Drive around a look for a place like everyone else." Another person had only euros, not dollars, and was told, "That's not my fault." A third complaint was answered by reminding the person that this was a cheap hotel. We personally had no problems at all. It's important to remember that even though the prices are high, this is a 2-star hotel and you have to expect 2-star facilities and service. The free shuttle to the airport was an example of 2-star service. When we arrived, we called for a pickup from the subway station and were told that they no longer picked up. There was supposedly a schedule for rides to the station, but anyone wanting a ride had to wait for the driver to be located. Drivers had other duties at the hotel, so taking someone to the subway interrupted their work. In summary, this is a good place to stay if you realize the amenities are available only if you're lucky enough to get there in time. Parking is inadequate and you may have to find a place on the street. Breakfast is not worth the fight unless you get up early enough to avoid the crowds and before they run out of some food items. Be prepared to walk to the subway station because the shuttle doesn't really run on a schedule. Think of it as a safe, reasonably clean place to sleep. For the price, I don't think we could do any better. We could leave the hotel, walk to the subway, and be at Times Square within a half hour.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Buy an unlimited-ride pass for the subway. We paid $30 each for a 7-day pass and traveled throughout all the burroughs.

Nice stay

It was nice staying here, the staff is nice and polite, it took me about 20 minutes to get to Times Square driving. They have complementary breakfast until 9:30am which is great!

Time-saving tip: In Hotel

Sometimes their parking lot gets full, so they have spaces around the building where travelers can park on the street. Don't remember exactly but their parking lot fits about 30 cars.

good basic place to sleep

A clean, good, safe place to sleep if you are visiting NYC. Close enough to walk to subway, but with a shuttle. Safe neighborhood to walk in. Nice staff, clean rooms.

not bad for short stay

I stayed in this hotel two times (3 and 1 nights) with my wife and son during our NY visit. The hotel seems pretty old, however everything was clean, nice and in working condition. Staff was friendly, they helped us with orientation in the area and provided us with maps and guides for our trips to NY. Subway station (line 7, 40th street) is just 7-10 min walk; direct 15-20 min ride to Times Square. The neighborhood looked safe and quiet (at least during our stay). Nice view to the cemetery :)

front desk

The employee that was at the front desk was extremely rude. I stood at the register for about 10 minutes she kept on looking at us but she decided her conversation was better then helping the guest. When I finally called her over she ask what room we were checking out of in a rude manner. Will not stay there again.

good for short trip

We stayed two nights during a short vacation to see NYC. Hotel was 10-15 minute walk to local Metro station that goes right into Time Square (7 line) so for us this was very convenient. Neighborhood you walk through is fine, urban residential with some stores and a nice diner. Hotel was very clean, had a good price.. Housekeeping was very nice, front staff were fine. My only complaint was minor, we forgot our hairbrush and front desk did not have any free (cheap) combs. Parking at hotel is limited, we had the last spot and left our car for the stay.

Definitely a 1 to 2 star hotel

Subway is the 40 St-Lowery station on the 7 train which is about 8 blocks away (15-20 minute walk) with no elevators, so hard to get your luggage up and down the two flights of stairs. It is a local stop so make sure you don't get on the 7 express train: take the 7 local train. Cab was about $7 pre-tip from the subway station to the hotel. The transit time is about 20 minutes to Times Square so by the time you walk to the subway, wait a bit for the train, it could take you up to 45 minutes. You get what you pay for, but if I were you, I would pay more and stay elsewhere.

Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

Buy a 7 day Metro Pass for $30. It's worth it because every subway/bus trip you take is $2.50. The hotel offers a van and driver to drive you to the subway once an hour until 7 pm, but let the desk clerk know ahead of time so that she can have someone waiting for you and you can reserve your spot.
