Great Place for a Good Value
I have stayed in this hotel a few times and I have so far enjoyed my stay there. The staff is pretty friendly and helpful. The room is a good size for a hotel in NYC and it is pretty clean as far as I can tell. If however your room faces Jamaica Avanue, then you may have a problem with the constant noise as Jamaica Avenue is pretty busy at all times. The hotel is literally one to two minutes away from the subway. I have read some of the reviews saying the location is unsafe. I think some guests may get that impression because a lot of police cars pass right in front of the hotel, but, as I said, Jamaica Avenue is quite a busy Avenue so it makes sense police cars will drive through it. I have never felt unsafe and in danger in there when I went to order take out at night. My only complaint is the wifi connection. You do get free internet, but it is slow and could certainly be better. The hotel is about 40 minutes away from the city so if you have business in Manhattan, this hotel may not be for you. Considering the rates, the hotel is a great place to stay.

Clarion Jamaica
Good location if you want to take the subway into Manhattan. Neighborhood can be noisy at night. Complimentary breakfast was OK - they ran out of some things 1/2 hour before end of breakfast time.

Convenient for U.S. Open
Walking distance to the train station with easy access to the U.S. Open; However, their Internet was down the entire down and no Office center or printer to be found

OK for thrifty travellers
The hotel is OK, but not recommended for single women because of the sketchy neighborhood. It was perfectly safe, but seems unsavory. However, neither my husband nor I had anything but good interactions with the locals. The subway is very convenient. The hotel itself looks newly remodelled. It was clean, much cleaner than my own home. :-) Our room was nice and quiet for the few hours per night we were there. We were up very early and returned very late. So mostly we were only there in the wee hours of the night. The breakfast was one of the worst hotel breakfasts that we have encountered on 3 continents. If you want donuts, there are three Dunkin Donuts within sight of the hotel. There are also many delicious delis, Wendy's, McDonalds, Subway, etc within a block or so of the hotel. Subway rides to Manhatten are time consuming, but if you are a tourist with plenty of time, it is just fine.

Don't fear the location
While the location may appear seedy (ok - it is seedy!) I found it perfectly safe at all hours. The neighborhood adjacent is working class and the only low-lifes were outside the subway stop and only a couple. The subway (E train) is just a block away and just 15 minutes to midtown Manhattan. The room was business style, nice desk, free WiFi, and in-room refrigerator. Staff was friendly and efficient. Would I stay here again? Sure! I saved over $300/night compared to midtown on my stay mid-week!

With the money you save staying here, you can eat like a king at Mario Batali's "Eataly" in midtown (23rd and 5th) - a don't miss Italian supermarket with dining kiosks throughout!

Great location to the subway (2 min walk) although the neighborhood is not too great. Nice clean rooms, well furnished.

Would stay there again...
The hotel was right off the express way. There were several places to eat right by the hotel. If you have a car, the parking is terrible. Overall the value was pretty good.

Worked for 2 professionals exploring NYC architecture w/o $$$
Pros: firm mattress, clean sheets, clean bath, generous bkft, 1 block from E subway at Jam/Van Wyck, nice staff, cleaning hallway carpeting while we were there, offered toiletries at desk if you forgot something, stores nearby were reasonable for fruit and snacks Cons: DB room very small, bedspread had spots that made us take bedbug precautions when we got home, smelly AC got either too warm or too cold, location near hospital noisy and rough looking, park near one Metro entrance full of homeless, manager rude at first but got nicer. We used a week-long Metro pass to see modern architecture of NYC mostly, so the 40 min ride into NYC gave our feet a rest. Safer to use the hospital Metro entrance at night and a taxi for late night. We saved $100/nt by staying here and people going to JFK will find it handy.

The Time-Warner Building at Columbus Circle (S-W corner of Central Park) has a huge grocery store in the lower level that serves everything at reasonable prices: pizza, salad, hot and cold deli - fabulous!
