You Get What You Pay For

The room was cheap, but the hotel feels a little too "old school". The room was very average and somewhat dirty. We had to take luke-warm showers. Hotel staff was notified about the hot water problem and we were told it would get hotter later. It didn't. I should have used the money I lost there to get a better place.

Cheap sleep

The Bellmen were awesome and very quick when it came to handling our luggage. The staff overall was very nice. If you want good food do not order room service. The hot water never gave out it was wonderful. For the price you really can't beat it; but you do get what you pay for.

Regrettable rest stop in Reno

The hotel was ok, my main problem was sound insulation. I could hear every conversation in the hallway and outside. Didn't get a good sleep. Internet was an additional 10 dollars. Staff were helpful, breakfast at mel's was cheap and tasty.

You Get What You Pay For

Sands has an aged appearance with the basic of amenities. The gambling area is relatively small and musty but people are friendly. It is decent with large rooms but does not have the bells & whistles that a well-traveled guest might expect. Can't complain because it didn't cost an arm and a leg. This is an an acceptable hotel for the thrifty traveler. Would stay here again if other hotels were asking too much (they had a Wildlife convention in Reno so other hotels were either full or asking a hefty price for their accommodations). This is more for adults......can't see children staying here.....

Other hotels (Circus Circus, Silver Legacy, Eldorado) are nearby and offer more gambling, restaurants and entertainment....if you want to venture outside.

About What You'd Expect

Stayed at the Sands for one night during cross-country trip. Primary reason for being there was not to gamble. It appears that this hotel, like Reno's casino hotels in general, are more "blue collar" than the tonier ones in Vegas or Tahoe, so expectations should not be too high. The furniture, decor and fixtures in our room were old, worn and dated but still functional. There was no free internet (wireless or otherwise), which all but the lower end hotels have now and would be expected for this hotel. The price was good, so one could overlook these negatives.

Sightseeing tip: Not Applicable

The casinos/hotels in Reno we visited catered to a less affluent type of visitor. If that's not an issue for you, Reno can be a good value. If not, better go to Vegas or South Tahoe.

Everything fine but...

The room was nice and clean, but we were unable to sleep. One inch gaps under the doors to the hallway and ajoining room made for bright light and loud noise all night and all morning. This was not a private, restful getaway.

Going downhill

I've stayed at the Sands before and had a nice stay. The water pressure is not good and the tub in our room drained very slow. Taking a shower, you had standing water in the tub. They did come up and clear up but wouldn't you think the housekeepers would notice and report before someone got into the room? Sands casino is small but I like it and they're the only casino in Reno with Bingo. Their players comps are good compared to other casinos and the Mexican restaurant is okay.

A little yucky but the price is right

I stayed here for 2 nights not to gamble but because I needed a budget option while staying in Reno. The Sands fit the bill on that count. The room - and staff - were really a mixed bag. The room was pretty shabby and stained, but the bed was quite comfortable, and I had a great view out the window. Some of the staff were real sweetie pies, in particular the shuttle drivers and bell hops and one of the wait staff, but some of the other staff were cold and jaded, and one staff person in the restaurant gave me the wrong change - not mistakenly, it appeared. The housekeepers forgot to make my bed although I requested it. It was difficult to access drinking water as the machines were not accepting dollar bills. A treat this isn't. But a tolerable and cheap housing option perhaps.
