The Stratosphere Casino Hotel and Tower is often the first glimpse travelers get of the vibrant city of Las Vegas, since it can be seen clearly not only from McCarran International Airport (LAS), but from the seclusion of Red Rock Canyon some 20 miles away. Stay at 'The Strat' for an 80,000-square-foot casino, complete with a wide range of table games and video slots, a revolving restaurant, adrenaline-pumping thrill rides and a wedding chapel for the rapturously impulsive.  And whether it's dining at Zagat-rated restaurants, taking a dip in the crystal clear pools, or even shopping at the on-site magic store with dreams of emulating Las Vegas' magicians Penn & Teller, no traveler could get bored in this mini metropolis.

Neighborhood
Situated roughly halfway between the hustle and bustle of 'new' Vegas, with state-of-the-art complexes such as CityCenter, and classic 'old' Vegas - the city from the Bugsy Siegel era - the Stratosphere provides guests with the best of both worlds. Mix the glamor of 'The Strip' with the old-time romance of Fremont Street, and witness an amazing, overhead, free light show occurring every evening.
Hints and tips
Stratosphere's Air Bar is currently the highest bar in the city - at 800 feet - and offers views across the infamous Vegas skyline, but you will require a reservation, because access can be tricky on busy nights. If a rebellious alternative is more your thing, why not simply drop down just one floor to the Level 107 Lounge? Enjoy the same vista over 'bright light city' without the crowds.
Policies and Fees

The property charges a Resort Fee of $17.99 USD plus 12% tax per room, per night for a total of $20.15 USD. Amenities include unlimited admission for up to 4 guests per room to the Stratosphere Tower's indoor and outdoor observation decks, use of the fitness centre and seasonal pool and parking (valet or covered self-park available).

This is not a comprehensive list of fees. Any amounts listed above may not include taxes and are subject to change.

Decent hotel but questionable location

The Stratosphere is on the far north end of the Las Vegas "Strip" and we were thankful we had a rental car, otherwise, it would be too far to walk (in 90 plus degrees) just to get to where everything else is and taxi cabs are pricey (They charge by the 1/13th of a mile). The neighborhood/streets around the hotel are filthy and wouldn't feel safe to walk by at nite unlike the central areas of the strip, but the hotel itself is decent. We stayed on the recently renovated non-smoking 15th floor, however many other patrons did not pay attention to the no-smoking part, so there was nasty cigarette smoke in the vents. The hotel does not have internet access unless you want to pay $11.99 a day. There is no refrigerator, no microwave, no coffee maker, so we had to buy everything. The thermostat in the room does not go below 68 which was OK. The pool on the 8th floor was nice and clean and not too crowded, however you can't bring any kind of your own drink (not a bottle of water or soda and certainly no alcohol) as they want you to buy everything from the pricey pool bar. With our room, we had unlimited trips to the top of the Stratosphere (which saves $16 per person each trip), which was fabulous at nite to take in the city view but inconvenient (for early risers)that it didn't open until 10 AM. The breakfast/brunch buffet was fantastic, the fresh fruit was some of the best we'd ever tasted. They also had huge crab legs. At $19.95 a person, it's reasonable, especially for what you have to choose from. All in all, it was decent, but if you're looking to come to Vegas and see all the big resorts and hotels, I wouldn't recommend the Stratosphere as it's too far north and in a dingey neighborhood, which limits what you get to see/do. It's more of a place to visit, but not a great place to stay.

Dining tip: In Hotel

The $19.95 per adult brunch in the hotel was good food/value, as was the $10 Stratosphere-shaped yard of Strawberry Daiquiries.

Stratosphere not so Stratospheric

When we arrived there was no record of our reservation. This took over half an hour to resolve. Room was very average, and despite being a non-smoking room, it wreaked of smoke!

Stratosphere Las Vegas

We stayed in a newly remodeled room, which was not all that impressive. For being newly remodeled it had a feel of the late 80's. It wasn't horrible, just didn't make us feel luxurious. The restaurants in the hotel were the most disappointing. They were way over priced and / or poor quality. The buffet was the best but way to expensive. The restaurant in the tower, (On top of the world, i think it was,) blah. Finally it's just a huge pain to get anywhere you want to be, and the Stratosphere is no where near anyplace you want to be in Vegas. I guess we got what we paid for. I wouldn't call it a bargain as much as I would call it being cheap.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Ride the Deuce (City Bus), you can ride the bus for $7 per person for 24 hours. We spent only $28 (two people two days) dollars in traveling the whole strip, and our longest wait at the bus stop was 20mins, most the time we waited less then 5. Way cheaper then a cab. Plus it goes all the way from Mandala Bay to the Golden Nugget.

Upgrade your room or regrett it.

If you are booking at the Stratosphere, pay a little more for the Stratosphere Select room. I did not and regretted it. The room was small and very plain. There was no coffee maker in the room, you have to walk down to the starbucks in the lobby and buy coffee every morning. No seating other than two straight back chairs at a very small table. The TV was big, but the speakers were blown out and the remote barely worked. Besides the room the Stratosphere is a decent hotel. The restaurants and buffet are fine. The lobby and casino are modern and sleek but lack the pizazz of the other big casino hotels on the strip.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Take the Deuce. The Stratosphere is pretty far north on the strip. Too far to walk to the heart of the strip. The Deuce bus line stops right out front, costs only $7 for 24 hours, and can take you anywhere on the strip.
