Riviera is good value for your budget

Our stay at the Riviera was very pleasant. The hotel is at the north end of the strip, which allowed us to take advantage of less crowds, and lowest minimum bets at the Blackjack tables. The only issue we had, was a piece of the ceiling was falling off most likely from a leak in the room above us. We walked to the heart of the strip one day and enjoyed visiting most of the other casinos, and then took advantage of the 24 hour bus pass for $7.00 pps.

Nightlife tip: Short drive from hotel

Try to set up a club excursion by bus. You get in the front of the line at the clubs, they have shots on the bus, and some clubs offer two for one drinks as part of the excursion. About $45.00 pps.

fair to good getaway

Knowing that the hotel had a historic past in Vegas, we selected the Riviera. Our arrival was uneventful. The staff at the registration desk were moody and not helpful. Thinking she was having a bad day, I dismissed it. About an hour later I go down to the help desk to inquire about hotel activities and amenities and the person there seemed to be bothered by my questions. However, the third hotel staff person that I ran into was very helpful, eager to help and I felt went above and beyond. In addition, the staff in the coffee shop were all helpful and friendly. The value in the coffee shop was exceptional. The casino had friendly staff and not so friendly staff (depending on time of day). The minimum bet limits at the casino were a bit higher than other casinos. In fact, the Sahara, 5-minute walk, had a bunch of $1 blackjack tables and a $3 Craps table. The one thing that I would have liked is that the hotel do a better job promoting shows and activites within thier hotel. The hotel did a fine job in trying to promote timeshares (which we were not interested in) time and time again. Overall - yes I would stay again.

Time-saving tip: Not Applicable

Use the bus system. $7 = 24 hour bus pass. Easy to use and very reliable. Go from downtown Vegas (Fremont)to the far end of the strip (Mandalay Bay) on the same bus in about 30-minutes. Super-super value!!!!!

Riviera hotel

"Refresh" service is not nearly adequate for daily cleaning. Bathrooms especially require soap-type products when being wiped down, not just water. For myself, my room was otherwise ok but I heard comments about clothes left in bed from previous room occupants and bugs!

Nice hotel for the price

This hotel is pretty good for the price. I'm not sure why others have left poor reviews. This hotel is probably equivelent to a Holiday Inn or Ramada. The rooms had LCD tv's and a cool alarm clock that allowed me to dock (and recharge) my ipod. The room was clean and comfortable. Room to room calling is free. Calling a local # is $1 for the first 3 minutes, then $0.21 for each following minute. Calling international was some crasy price. Inbound calls to your room are free. Internet was available in the rooms for $10/day. There is a McDonalds directly across from the hotel which provided free wifi.

Money-saving tip: Long walk from hotel

If you are travelling to the main area of the strip, purchase an unlimited bus pass for $15 for 3 days. A one way cab ride costs about $9 to the main area of the strip.

LOTS of walking!

The Riviera was quite a walk to the actual strip, and pretty far away from the Sahara and Stratosphere. The person working at the bar was rude. We asked where we could find a soda station. He got us a soda and said "that will be $3.75." We asked if there were any free soda stations (because back home at every casino the soda is free). He rudely replied, "there's nothing free." After that experience we had to wait in line for almost an hour to check in to our hotel. This wasn't because there was a long line of people (there were after a while), but because they didn't want to let us check in until after noon. The check in was done by computer. They saw a line of about 150 people waiting impatiently to check in. Since check in was by computer and not an actual person they should have let us start as soon as the the line started to go outside. There was a lot of construction at the hotel. The pool area was closed and under construction. There was no alternative pool. Our room was quite a walk from the actual casino part. We stayed in the Monaco Tower. For being the new part of the hotel it was just okay. The cleaning service did not clean the room up except for make the bed and take the old towels. Overall I wish I would have payed the extra money to stay at a hotel like The Venetian or something closer to everything. A hotel in the Fairmont area would have probably been better also.I have taken quite a few trips, and this has been one of the worst ones. I knew there would be a lot of walking, but we spent a lot of money on bus passes, and the bus never came on schedule. We waited twice for an hour for it to come, and it was dark out so it was cold! The most expensive thing there was food. We didn't eat a lunch that cost us less than $25 for both of us. We went to see BITE at the Stratosphere. It wasn't more than a few professional dancers dancing like strippers. You could tell how some of them moved that they were ballarinas or gymnists. The dancing was less than perfect for being Vegas. I guess we expected a lot more out of Vegas than we saw. We went to every hotel on the strip. We also went to The Palms and The Rio. Vegas will probably not be on my vacation agenda again. I think that southern Florida fits my lifestyle a lot more.

Dining tip: Long walk from hotel

There are places to eat everywhere. Go to each hotel, monorail station, and discount ticket place and check out the brochures. There are coupons for a lot of places to get dinner. Be prepared to walk or take a bust to get to them though.
