yin and yang

i was surprised that our room was BEAUTIFUL! they even had bath and body works shampoo and conditioner. the beds were too small. there was a mini fridge which we loved. and a flat screen. our room was GREAT for the price. BUT, in the same hotel, my brother paid the same price for another room on the other side of the hotel and he said it was the ghetto! there was no air conditioner and his neighbors were yelling all night. i'm glad i didnt end up with his room.... i would definately book again with the Riviera.

Entertainment tip: Short drive from hotel

i have booked entertainment for vegas online. it's WAY cheaper to book upon arrival. there are plenty of places to purchase tickets to great shows for roughly 50 dollars less than retail value. how great are the tickets? i dont know. this time we just went to unwind due to a stressful week. maybe in the summer when we go back i can find out how great or awefull the seats are.

Helpful, clean, and perfect location

Although there was a food court, I wish there was more dining options at this hotel. That was the only bad thing about the stay there. [...] The staff with VERY VERY helpful and very nice! The room was super clean, bigger than i thought it was going to be, and suprisingly quiet! Would stay there again anyday!!!!

Impersonal and Dirty at a good price!

Let's face it: The Riviera is an old casino-hotel and her age really shows. [...]The valet stations were closed so I had to use the self-parking, located at the back of the property. Walking towards the entrance to the casino, I was assaulted by the smell of rotting garbage and old cooking grease. The grand doors were dirty and grimy. I strolled through a poorly ventilated, nearly empty casino. At the registration desk were two clerks seated behind a long row of self-serve kiosks (the kind you see at airline check in counters) and neither of the two women broke from their intense personal conversation to greet me so after a minute I stepped forward and followed the easy on-screen directions. I had never checked in to a hotel before using an automated kiosk and when the keys were dispensed from the little machine, I walked up to the clerk - still intent on her conversation - and asked if there was anything else I needed to do. She pulled out a map, made a few lines and circles on it and handed it to me. I tried to engage her in a bit of small talk and commented on how impersonal the kiosks felt and she snapped "well get used to it!" and sent me on my way. I am not a terribly sensitive person but I literally walked away feeling offended.I wondered if hand sanitizer was outside of the hotel's budget, given their disinclination towards housekeeping, but didn't see any. I walked down the hall of the 'non-smoking' 7th floor through the reek of cigarettes and pot. The halls were dimly lit, no doubt to aid in disguising the dirt and grime that covered the walls and carpet. Inside my room however, I found a clean room with the typical layout of a small hotel. The bathroom was tiny but adequate. There were plenty of clean towels and the usual assortment of mini-sized soaps and shampoo stacked on the lid of the toilet (there is no room for counters in this tiny bathroom). The floors were clean with the exception of some random fluff and hairs in the corner behind the toilet. Wide, high windows, streaked with dirt lined the entire back wall, boasting a lovely view of a rooftop below and the back of a building under construction in front of me. But I didn't mind the view. The double curtains were in good repair. The two double beds were lavishly piled with soft downy pillows, a downy comforter and an adequate night stand. In contrast to the dingy hotel, the beds were a haven of comfort and I was delighted that at least I would sleep comfortably if not soundly. I called the front desk to inquire about the UFC event scheduled for that night and where I might go to watch the fight on television. I was transferred to three different people before hearing "I'm sorry ma'am, we don't have a concierge service here at this hotel. Click." I finally used my cell phone to call the MGM Grand and got an answer immediately – several options in fact. About an hour later, I did get a call from someone with information about the fights being televised at the Palms so at least someone worked on my question and got back to me. Better late than never! I did not sleep well. Doors slammed well into the wee hours of the night, people stomped and shouted up and down the hallways and a moderately loud fight broke out briefly in a room near mine. Then again, my stay did coincide with the tail end of Spring Break so I could forgive all the commotion. The next morning I called room service for a half pot of hot coffee ($8.99), which arrived in 30 minutes. The coffee was delivered by a pleasant and courteous fellow. All in all, my stay was unpleasant. If not for the comfortable bed, I would have been hopping mad upon checkout. The bottom line is that for $89 a nite, I expect a pleasant stay in a clean hotel. My recommendation? Don't get sucked in by a good price and stay elsewhere!
