Voodoo in the air at this Off-Strip Carnival, starring Penn & Teller

What began at Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino as a tribute to South America's Carnival has expanded to a full off-Strip resort with many assets. Rooms in two towers are all suite-sized with plenty of space to party. Entertainment includes the legendary Penn & Teller magic duo, the sexy "Show In the Sky" parade, Chippendales male revue, DJs at the rooftop VooDoo Lounge and revolving acts at the Crown Theater. Take the one-minute and 10-second VooDoo Skyline zip ride that provides an exciting way to have 360-degree views of The Strip. The seasonal VooDoo beach includes several pools, a waterfall and sandy beach, flair bartenders and cabanas (fees apply).

Highlights
  • VooDoo Skyline zip ride
  • Live shows starring master magicians Penn & Teller, the Bad Boys of Magic
  • Home of the World Series of Poker tournaments
  • Meatballs at Café Martarano and breathtaking views at the rooftop Voodoo Lounge and Steak
  • The impressive 11,000 square-foot Crown Theater and Nightclub
Rooms
Big is the word at Rio, with standard suites at 600 square feet -- almost double some standard rooms in Las Vegas. Smart cream and gold decor accented by dark wood colors the suites, which also feature floor-to-ceiling views that can be enjoyed from spacious sitting areas as well as the king and double queen beds.  A large vanity and dressing area leads to the bathroom. There are several suite upgrades available at Rio All Suite Hotel with spa tubs, marble accents, plasma TVs and even more space. Wi-Fi Internet access is available for a fee. The Rio is also pet-friendly with restrictions.
Features
Amenities at Rio include 14 dining options, a full spa and salon, two wedding chapels, hot entertainment, VooDoo Skyline zip ride and five pools with a lagoon and sand beach. Both I-bar and McFadden's are popular drinking spots. Guests can stroll two floors of retail shops at Masquerade Village, and Motley Crue fans won't want to miss the Vince Neil Ink tattoo parlor. Ladies can't resist The Show featuring 12 Chippendales dancers in the new Chippendales Theater, complete with a Sky Lounge, Gossip Pit and the new Flirt Lounge. At 100,000 square-feet, the Rio Casino boasts popular games, a Keno lounge, a race and sports book, and also honors the Harrah's Total Rewards Card. Free self- and valet parking is available.
Dining
Known for its meatballs, Café Martarano Las Vegas serves classic East Coast Italian food in a high-energy, 7,000 square-foot room that features wide screen TVs playing scenes from mob movies. Venture to the rooftop for Cajun-inspired steaks and the hypnotic view at VooDoo Lounge and Steak. Other restaurant choices at Rio include Buzio seafood, Gaylord Indian, McFadden's Irish Pub, Hamada Japanese, Village Seafood Buffet, a Starbucks and more. Star the day with breakfast and flair at the Carnival World Buffet or Sao Paulo Cafe.

Just wrong.

We were not advised at front desk upon check in that the seafood buffet was not open all week. This is after we were told at check in how great it was! The Rio show was not happening that week and several other restaurants and buffets were closed. Management was not helpful other than "sorry". The Carinval dinner buffet was a horrendous wait. Breakfast buffet was empty and quite good. Towels in the room were dirty, took two phone calls and several hours to obtain replacements.Stains in bedding and carpet. In room refrigerator was set to to the coldest setting, ran constantly, freezing contents. Suprisingly, Planet Hollywood had the best buffet and decor.

Avoid the Rio Hotel if you have a choice

The lamp on nightstand was broken when we checked in. I called and asked for it to be repaired/replaced as I like to read before bed. After 24 hours no one responded. I called again and someone came to the room within 20 minutes and removed the lamp and said they return with a replacement. I called the following day to inquire about the missing lamp, none appeared. We stayed a total of 5 nights and we never got a replacement lamp. The hotel is in desperate need of an upgrade. the rooms are generally run down. Service was really slow at the front desk and restaurants. This hotel is located off the strip and not close to anything. There are better choices.

Eh - just okay

To be fair, my last 3 trips to Vegas we stayed at Venetian, Palazzo, Bellagio so I'm used to higher standards. Stayed at Rio this time for the Star Trek Convention. The hotel itself isn't on the strip, so slightly inconvenient, but they do provide a free shuttle to either Harrahs or Ballys. But have to wait for shuttle, the lines are disorganized, shuttles are packed. The room was blah. It was nicer than the Luxor, where I stayed 4 years ago and that was a total dump. I'd say it was in the range of Holiday Inn/Best Western. Just a plain room, nothing outstanding about it at all. Did have a small fridge, that was the only bonus. The Casino is very nice, very attractive and there are some super nice shops and boutiques. Our room was quite far from the convention area and it was a very long walk - and we walked it several times. The staff were pleasant and nice, just one cashier at the buffet was rather snotty and rude. As for their buffet, it was impressive just from the mere size of it. You can't see one end from the other! They did have a huge assortment of food, many different ethnic varieties - but the food itself is made for quantity, not quality. Typical cafeteria food, nothing great about it at all. The line to get in the buffet was extremely long. We bought the 24 hour Buffet pass and did pay and extra $10 at dinner to bypass the line and use the VIP entrance. Nice perk, but it just adds to the cost of an average quality buffet. Would I stay here again? Probably not, but I wouldn't count it out totally as I did the Luxor. Personally, I'd rather pay more and have the luxury of the higher-end places.

Time-saving tip: In Hotel

If the line at the buffet is longer than perhaps 30-50 people, pay the extra $10 for the VIP entrance - unless you enjoy standing in lines for long amounts of time!
