Voodoo in the air at this Off-Strip Carnival, starring Penn & Teller

What began at Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino as a tribute to South America's Carnival has expanded to a full off-Strip resort with many assets. Rooms in two towers are all suite-sized with plenty of space to party. Entertainment includes the legendary Penn & Teller magic duo, the sexy "Show In the Sky" parade, Chippendales male revue, DJs at the rooftop VooDoo Lounge and revolving acts at the Crown Theater. Take the one-minute and 10-second VooDoo Skyline zip ride that provides an exciting way to have 360-degree views of The Strip. The seasonal VooDoo beach includes several pools, a waterfall and sandy beach, flair bartenders and cabanas (fees apply).

Highlights
  • VooDoo Skyline zip ride
  • Live shows starring master magicians Penn & Teller, the Bad Boys of Magic
  • Home of the World Series of Poker tournaments
  • Meatballs at Café Martarano and breathtaking views at the rooftop Voodoo Lounge and Steak
  • The impressive 11,000 square-foot Crown Theater and Nightclub
Rooms
Big is the word at Rio, with standard suites at 600 square feet -- almost double some standard rooms in Las Vegas. Smart cream and gold decor accented by dark wood colors the suites, which also feature floor-to-ceiling views that can be enjoyed from spacious sitting areas as well as the king and double queen beds.  A large vanity and dressing area leads to the bathroom. There are several suite upgrades available at Rio All Suite Hotel with spa tubs, marble accents, plasma TVs and even more space. Wi-Fi Internet access is available for a fee. The Rio is also pet-friendly with restrictions.
Features
Amenities at Rio include 14 dining options, a full spa and salon, two wedding chapels, hot entertainment, VooDoo Skyline zip ride and five pools with a lagoon and sand beach. Both I-bar and McFadden's are popular drinking spots. Guests can stroll two floors of retail shops at Masquerade Village, and Motley Crue fans won't want to miss the Vince Neil Ink tattoo parlor. Ladies can't resist The Show featuring 12 Chippendales dancers in the new Chippendales Theater, complete with a Sky Lounge, Gossip Pit and the new Flirt Lounge. At 100,000 square-feet, the Rio Casino boasts popular games, a Keno lounge, a race and sports book, and also honors the Harrah's Total Rewards Card. Free self- and valet parking is available.
Dining
Known for its meatballs, Café Martarano Las Vegas serves classic East Coast Italian food in a high-energy, 7,000 square-foot room that features wide screen TVs playing scenes from mob movies. Venture to the rooftop for Cajun-inspired steaks and the hypnotic view at VooDoo Lounge and Steak. Other restaurant choices at Rio include Buzio seafood, Gaylord Indian, McFadden's Irish Pub, Hamada Japanese, Village Seafood Buffet, a Starbucks and more. Star the day with breakfast and flair at the Carnival World Buffet or Sao Paulo Cafe.

Nice place, but being off the strip hurts...

Pros: Large, clean rooms, good food choices, nice casino. Cons: Somewhat lethargic employees, not set up for first time visitors (no helpful map), never found exercise room. Biggest issue is distance from strip - shuttle works but schedule is a victim of traffic, no convenience stores within reach to make suite worthwhile. A nice place but only if you drive or plan to stay only at that resort, in my opinion. Recommendation is with that caveat.

Friend getaway

Everything was fine, room was very nice. Only thing that I was mad about was the fact that they left a flyer outside the door saying to be carful that a lot of people were getting the stomach flu, and because of that my boyfriend got it, so I ask, are they not sanatizing the sheets and pillows? They also said people were getting the stomach flu from the buffet!

Would stay there again

We had a great time and enjoyed the facility and amenities. Only disappointment was minor in that the Sao Paolo restaurant had limited hours and menu since last stay at the Rio. Could be time of the season? Staff was extremely friendly, however, I didn't appreciate the dealer at black jack one evening allowing a player to continually drop the F bomb without dealing with the situation. He must have been more interested in tips as the woman was obviously wealthy.

Everything was good except...

The hotel was nice, the location was off the Strip but the hotel provided a free shuttle to and from the Strip which made up for the fact that the eating establishments in the hotel closed early. There was no 24 hour eating unless you ordered room service. What stood out more than anything was the lack of customer service at the concierge desk during the daytime. I hate it when I spending my money and I'm made to feel like I'm inconveniencing someone whose job it is to make sure that all my needs are met and with a smile. My motto is if you're not a people-person don't get a job in any type of customer service field.

Money-saving tip: Short drive from hotel

Even though Rio is off the Strip, you can get on the Strip using their free shuttle and get to all the shopping outlets and downtown (Old Las Vegas) for much less than cab fair if you take the Deuce or the RTC. We saved about $50 per trip by forgoing the cab and taking the hotel shuttle to the strip and catching the bus to the outlet malls.

VIP UPGRADE

I BOOKED A STAND ROOM BUT I WAS UPGRADED TO A VIP SUITE WHEN I CHECKED IN. IM SURE THIS DOESNT HAPPEN ALL THE DAY BUT THE ROOM WAS AMAZING. EVERYTHING ABOUT THE ROOM WAS AWESOME. THE PRICE FOR THE STANDARD WAS VERY REASONABLE. THE UPGRADE WAS JUST A HUGE BONUS. THE HOTEL IS FUN AND HAS A GOOD ATOMSPHERE. MY ONY DOWNSIDE IS ITS LOCATION. IT IS NOT ON THE STRIP, BUT FOR THE MONEY IT IS A GOOD VALUE.

Better than the first time

We stayed at the Rio for the second time because the Super Nat kart races were hosted here. I was pleasantly surprised the second time around where we stayed in the Ipanema Towers. The suites here are more modern than the other side which really shows its age. It was a comfortable place especially with our toddler. And the most important part of all was that we slept well. Neither of us woke with a sore or stiff back. For the price, the place is just right. We will probably be booking at the Rio regularly. Our only complaint is the darn resort fees!!! It's $20/night PLUS they tax that, so it comes out to $22.40 per night. Ridiculous! We didn't use any amenities at all! It's too cold to swim and the internet is still not free on top of that! They charge $13/day for internet. TOTALLY ridiculous. Unfortunately all hotels on the strip (and many other states we've visited) are charging absurd resort fees.

Room was spacious.

Both sinks were clogged upon arrival very late night. Plumber arrived promptly; however, they should not have been clogged. Confirmed a non-smoking, king room. However, was told at check-in, the bed size wasn't guaranteed. Had to take a smoking room to get a king bed. Couldn't sleep due to smoke smell. We were told we were upgraded to a room with a view, which was also a room with alot of street noise. They did switch the room the second day, and gave us a credit for a portion of the resort fee, but our trip really started off on the wrong foot. The Voodoo Steak Restaurant was fantastic with a great view. Penn and Teller show as good.

Rio Hotel

Rates were reasonable and the room was very clean. There were some unexpected charges that I did not realize, but I still need to call them. I would stay there again but I might stay at different property with Total Rewards next time just to switch it up a bit.
