Good service & Friendly Staff

Hotel Staff was friendly and received good service. Guest room noise level from next room was little bit of problem but not too significant. The bath room was clean but was lack of towels. Other than that, everythingelse was good.

Great weekend getaway

At the drop of a dime I reserved a room for the night for me and my kids at the Cal Neva. We had a beautiful view from our room and for the price we paid the room was large and comfortable. The staff was very nice and the area around the hotel was very nice. I will definetely go back again.

Legendary Hotel, Amazing Location, Good Value

The CalNeva has a storied history and it would be worth visiting for the location, history, and architecture alone. On top of that, the staff is friendly, the rooms clean and somewhat modern (that's not a jab -- it's an old hotel that they have worked to bring closer up to date), and the value fantastic. The only gripe I have is with the heating: it's effective, forced-air heat. But even on the lowest setting it's too hot after an hour or two. With the heat off, in a Tahoe winter, the room is too cold. So you are forced to run the heat and open the window to try and find the sweet spot, which is *very* difficult to find. I think this could be fixed if they just configured the low heat setting to be a bit cooler.

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

If you haven't skied Diamond Peak or Mt. Rose, check them out. Mt. Rose's superior elevation means more snow and more cold in these drier years. Diamond Peak is literally 10 minutes away, and Mt. Rose around 25.

Need to call for Hot Water and be weary of Concerts until 4am

Lower floor rooms require that you call 5 minutes ahead if you want to take a hot shower. They allow people to have dogs in their rooms. Peeling wall paper in the bathroom, sheets were patched to fix cigarette burns, bed cover and furnishings were all from the 70s or 80s, last night of stay there was a concert on the main level that went to 4am. Concert goers could be heard loitering outside room window. Spa was broken, pool closed for season, casino is all computerized including the blackjack table.

Run down, but hard to beat price for location

You get what you pay for. If you're just looking for a place to sleep while visiting North Lake Tahoe, then it is hard to beat the price for the location of this hotel. If you're looking for something more (Good casino, good bar, modern amenities, decent bed and furnishings, sound isolation), this place leaves much to be desired. Now that I think of it more, sound isolation was pretty bad. I now think I have an appropriate understanding of what "Paper walls" means.

Money-saving tip: In Hotel

If you have a season pass to any Tahoe-Area hotels, you stay for $45 a night, but you can't make a reservation. They will not honor your season pass if you book through a travel site or their own site.

Perfect for what we needed

We were looking for a last minute MLK snowboarding and ski weekend... but were sort on cash. Staying here we could afford a clean, quiet room with a view of Lake Tahoe. Downstairs there was gambling and arcade games. The bar looked nice, but bring your own ginger ale. Worked for us.

gorgeous tahoe, as always

no snow this winter so tahoe is pretty laid back. all the hotels are nearly empty and begging for you to stay with them. the Cal Neva has great deals going right now and we're glad we took advantage of it. the staff was friendly and helpful - when the heater in our room was noisy, they moved us "instantly" to another room (actually an upgrade). overall, it's a bit run-down but who spends much time in their room when they're at tahoe?!! we'll be back to tahoe, and will probably stay here again.
