450-acre resort is old world Santa Fe with new world spa

Bishop's Lodge Ranch dates back over 100 years in northern New Mexico history. As the hideaway for the Santa Fe archbishop, buildings were carefully nestled into the mountainside for an ideal balance of nature and cityscape. Downtown is surprisingly close -- only a five minute shuttle ride down the hill. A renowned spa, kid-friendly activities and the largest outdoor pool in Santa Fe are highlights.

Highlights
  • Historic Hotel of America
  • Tucked in the private Tesuque Valley of the Sangre de Cristos mountains just north of downtown Santa Fe
  • Pet-friendly (fees apply)
  • Full-service ShaNah spa
  • The 2009 film "Crazy Heart" was filmed here
Rooms

Expect stylish southwestern guestrooms ranging from intimate rustic interiors to upgraded contemporary three-bedroom townhomes complete with full kitchens and sweeping view patios. Standard amenities consistent across all 15 buildings include handmade wood furniture, original art, Mexican tile bathrooms, Wi-Fi (fees apply), mini refrigerators, robes, in-room safes and coffee-makers. Many rooms have kiva fireplaces. All 111 rooms are non-smoking.

Features

The guest experience at Bishops Lodge Ranch has a close relationship with the surrounding mountains. Warm months are spent horseback riding, playing tennis, sunning by the largest outdoor swimming pool in Santa Fe and hilltop barbecue cookouts. A summer kids camp has a sports, nature and art focus.

Winter retreats are best with a yoga session or an authentic Native American healing massage at award-winning full-service ShaNah Spa & Wellness Center, followed by a cup of herbal tea. Skeet and trap shooting, cooking demonstrations, art tours, and an up-to-date fitness center are available (all activities are included in the resort fee).

Dining

Kick back at Las Fuentes Restaurant & Bar, an indoor-outdoor restaurant built for optimal sunset views. Sink into fresh Southwestern fare and refreshing margaritas throughout the day on the fireside patio, in-room or by the pool.

disappointing

Expected higher quality. Deferred maintenance evident. Did not care for dinner quality or presentation. Foul smell in dining room. Breakfast on terrace was delightful. No outlets in room to plug in chargers or laptop power without moving furniture. WiFi connectivity problems & cel phone connectivity was intermittent. Neighbors were loud and walls were 'thin'; could here every word. I thought the setting was beautiful but, would not stay there again.

Santa Fe Experience

Very good hotel if you will use all the facilities offered. The restaurant is "First Class". The hotel rooms are a bit outdated i.e. small tube TVs, furniture in need of repair and the shower heads are the cheapest on the market.. The location is fantastic and the complex is quiet and very relaxing.

Great Escape!

My wife and I had a wonderful time at Bishop's Lodge. We brought our German Shepherd along for the trip and she absolutely loved the grounds and the staff couldn't be more welcoming. Santa Fe was such a charming little town filled with excellent restaurants and incredibly friendly people. Also, when we got back to the hotel there were miles upon miles of trails for our dog to run and play. My wife and I truly had an amazing experience on this entire vacation. Fortunately we even had to spend an extra day due to the weather and the staff at bishop's lodge were completely accommodating, honoring our discounted rate for the extra night. We even had a chance to go ski half a day becuase of our extended stay! Highly recommend this hotel.

Misleading Location and Dirty

Extremely disappointed! I booked this hotel for the location advertised on Orbitz (0.6m from center of Santa Fe ). Good thing I had a rental car, as it was NOT walking distance to the heart of Santa Fe! Also, based on the price I paid and the description, I was expecting a beautiful place. I must have been in an old room as it was defnitely very dated and dirty feeling. I am all for charm, but this was not charm. I would not stay here again.

a winner every time

The location is beautiful. Id you are going to Santa Fe there is no need if you have a car to stay near the plaza. It is far more relaxing to be here. I used to go here when my kids were young too and this is ideal for any age group. There were elderly as well as little tots. We got the cheapest rooms and they were large. Perhaps a new coat of paint in the halls would be good, but the room is fine and there is a fridge too and outside table and chair. You can walk, swim, take yoga classes, skeet shoot, horseback ride, book the spa...well worth the extra fee per day.

Bishop's Lodge in Santa Fe March 2011

We went to primarily go skiing in Ski Santa Fe and to also tour the Santa Fe Plaza. The room's heating system was bothersome. The heater emits heat even while turned off, so the room became quite warm. Also, we were on the 2nd floor of a two-story unit, so likely the heat from the bottom units migrated up. The horses were all booked up when we wanted to check it out, and the "heated" pool was only heated to the mid 70's in temperature, and the pool could have been cleaner (lots of leaves in the pool). The beds were also not comfortable. The fold-out bed was not useable.

Time-saving tip: Short drive from hotel

If you go to Ski Santa Fe during busy season, it's a good idea to rent your equipment prior to arriving at the slopes, as the rental area will be quite crowded.

If you don't want RUSTIC, don't stay!

One of the most important things to note is that you have to hike to your room, carrying your luggage up hills, in snow. This is a beautiful setting, but you must be in the market for a rustic experience! The room that was reserved [...] was in the oldest (94yrs) building on site. The room was not impressive; it was old, less than desireable, rather depressing and the whole biulding smelled bad. There was a tray of used food and dishes in front of the door when we checked in at 4:30pm. The front desk staff could not have been more helpful and courtious. She happily offered to upgrade our room with no additional charge. We looked at the other rooms availabe. (Still a hike to get to) the first room smelled like a skunk was litterally under the floor boards and the second room smelled like cigarette smoke and the tub was dirty & stained. We chose not to stay here[...]

Bishops Lodge Resort and Spa

We had an excellent visit at Bishop's Lodge. The enviornment was truly restorative, the formal dining room lovely but the terrace for drinks and light suppers sitting by the outside fireplace was memory making. Staff most accommodating and I would highly recommend it to others!
