Nice hotel in a bad location

Location of hotel was good during the day but after dark we felt uncomfortable walking around the area. There were very few places to eat other than in the hotel itself.

Overall good

Everything for this hotel is good. Free shuttle, breakfast, internet are big plus. Only thing which I found bad is front desk representative at night. He was very rude whenever I called him to pick up from aiport or train station.

Just Okay

This hotel is an older hotel, the rooms need updating but you get a continental breakfast with your stay. The breakfast room is really nice, but they don't tell you about the breakfast or where the room is when you check in (it's on the garage level). The toilet in the bathroom was really weird, has a plunger handle like the public restrooms and you can't flush it unless the lid is down. Overall, the hotel wasn't too bad, it is very close to Penn station which is where you need to go if you are going to NY. The hotel has a 24 hr shuttle to take you to and from Penn station. A direct train ride to NY (from Penn Station Newark to Penn Station Madison Square Gardens) will cost you $10 round trip per person. The parking at the hotel sucks, it's free but extremely limited. The underground garage connected to the hotel is not owned by the hotel so if you are not careful and park there by accident you will have to pay. This was my first trip to NY and if you stay here, park your car and take public transit. The traffic in NY and the surrounding areas is insane. The only bad thing was that I wasn't too sure about how safe the neighborhood was. The train station is close enough to walk (only a few blocks away) but I opted to take the shuttle because I wasn't sure about the neighborhood. On our way home, I noticed that there was a 24 hr Subway restaurant a few blocks over so the neighborhood can't be too bad, but better safe than sorry. I would probably stay there again. A decent price, you get what you pay for in that area.

Take the train to Penn Station in NYC and leave your car at the hotel. Don't bother driving through NY.

Did the Trick

The Best Western Plus is a good location when you don't want to spend Manhattan bucks but would like to have the option of going into the city. We visited Newark to go to a Red Bulls soccer match, it's within walking distance to the stadium. The room was updated but we were given a handicap accessible room and I don't think the bathroom had been upgraded - just the sleeping area. Overall an OK stay that included breakfast (although it was very busy on Sunday morning).

Good for the price, close to airport

We wanted to be close to the airport. The Treat hotel is about a 10-minute shuttle ride. The pros: free 24-hour shuttle, price, and reasonable walking distance to Penn Station. Cons: outdated decor, trash on the floors, and we had to wait for our room to be cleaned upon check-in. Suggestion: stay in Hoboken or some other happening city if you have the time.

Location based

The hotel was used for location to Newark Penn Station to and from Manhattan. For that, it is very good with just a few blocks walk to the station. The room itself was nice, beds, desk, tv, refrigerator, etc.... However, the restroom was not updated and was bare bones. It sufficed. The staff was pleasant and tried to help when needed. The Wifi in the room works poorly, and when asked about it, I was informed the weather sometimes knocks it out. On clear days it is still poor. I was provided a cable to hookup at the desk in my room. It was a fix, but I would have preferred to have the Wifi work properly. The restaurant (Maize) was not that impressive. After traveling, or a night in the city, you would like a small bite to eat. Unfortunately, you have the choice of the dinning room or the bar, neither of which has food priced appropriately. I would recommend taking your business elsewhere. A funny story with the separation of dining and the bar. The room is a rectangle, with no walls separating the bar. My group of four sat down in the dining area and asked for the specials which were on the board. We were informed that you have to sit in the bar for them, and rather rudely, informed that is why they are called bar specials. With no seats at the bar itself, merely 20 feet from our table, we were moved one table over between pillars. Kind of silly, especially with the place being empty. I presume the bar and the dinning area are run separately. Again, if you are looking for a place to stay to visit Manhattan and take the train, it does the trick. If you are looking for a halfway decent hotel with some food, go elsewhere.

Niz Sushi, off of Central Avenue, is a few blocks away and a great value. The staff was pleasant, they provided complimentary mussels, the food was great, and once inside, you forget the drab surroundings of the neighborhood.
