Across the street from the beach and Asbury Park boardwalk, this is a basic hotel with no amenities. Windows and TV reception ... can be an issue. Good restaurants and bars within walking distance.

While we did enjoy our stay, the hotel was lacking in many ways. The pool was closed for the 4 days we were there. ... Considering there was a hurricane and we were not allowed in the ocean, a pool would have been nice. Beach passes were not comped in return. The staff was not very helpful and could not even authorize a late check-out without a manager's say-so. TV had no movie or pay channels and reception was fuzzy. However, for the price it was ok. Good location, very close to the beach and the boardwalk. The rooms were very clean and comfortable.

For the price, this is a decent hotel. It has an interesting history and it's really the only place worth considering staying ... in asbury park if you dont want to risk scabies. It could however, use some improvements...those including, but are not limited to : more than one working ice machine in the hotel, more parking (the current situation is a mess), and some finishing touches on the actual construction itself. (a lot of the windows dont have screens on them, a some of the walls have unfinished ares of wallpapering). But if you dont mind overlooking charasmatic detail, this isn't a bad hotel, and the location is exceptional.

Acceptable but not great
dissatisfied guest Sep 15, 2009
Our room looked out onto the roof of part of the building below, and had broken glass on it that appeared to be from a ... window. The carbon monoxide detector in the room had no batteries. It seemed as though the updating of the hotel was done half-way. The room was sufficient enough just to sleep in but not to spend any time in it. We wouldn't go back.

Good for the Money
Ryan Sep 11, 2009
I stayed at the Berkeley Oceanfront with my girlfriend for just one night near the end of August. It was just a get away for ... a night and we went to the beach in the morning. Out of the 3 elevators, only 1 was in service. The pool was also shut down for the weekend we were there. Overall, the room was up to date and the hotel is across the street from the beach, so thats good, but for any more than 130 a night, I would have been very dissapointed.

Great location, great deal
Ab Fab Mom Sep 8, 2009
The Berkeley is a newly renovated hotel right on the Asbury Park boardwalk. I love the modern design they've given this ... classy old hotel. The absolute best thing about the hotel is how quiet it is in the rooms. They don't make them like they used too -- and the thick walls between the rooms and the high ceilings means you'll never hear your neighbors. The price is also unbelievable as well as the location. You really can't find a better deal in Asbury!

Irishmom Sep 7, 2009
We were with a large family party, and the rooms were neat and clean, and definitely the most affordable we saw, especially ... for something with such a great location right across from the boardwalk. The rooms varied in size, from some that were definitely adequate, to others which were quite spacious. While we found the surrounding area quite safe, it seems like a place no longer in its heyday, although it does looks like it might be on the rebound. There were a few minor glitches (light bulbs which needed replacement, e.g.) but the staff was very quick to respond to any complaints. Breakfast options were limited, but satisfactory. Good croissants.

Shadows of old grandeur
Jul Esq. Sep 7, 2009
Some thirty years ago this hotel may have been grand. Unfortunately, nothing has changed ever since. The great wide ... hallways and zebra decor are underscored by dirty carpets, and windows so dim with dirt & scum that you have to turn on the lights in the broad daylight. The rooms are big, and are still decorated in that modern 70-s scheme. The international staff is unfriendly and smile-free, conversing lazily in some nicely carribean dialect in the corners. Please do not expect your rooms to be serviced before noon. Breakfast is minimal, but it is there. No other dining options are there. Pro: Location, Big Rooms, GLBT friendly Con: Unfriendly staff, Dirty, Musty
