Shell Island Beach Resort

I was surprised at how run down this hotel was. The only nice area was the main lobby. The main hallways by the rooms were disgustingly dirty and there were dents and scuffs all over each door. The rooms were run down as well. Ours smelled like stale smoke and the shower head in our bathroom squirted out in all directions other than the shower area. Additonally, there was hair on one of the end tables in our bedroom, things were in poor mechanical shape, and one of the closets in our suite smelled like rotten fish (and that is where the extra linens were kept). The best part of this hotel is the beach view and access.

The location of this hotel was nice--beautiful beach. One of the two elevators was closed so we had to wait a substantial time to get to the 8th floor. Restaurant only served a breakfast buffet--food was cold and disappointing. No real dining room. Was expecting more elegance and amenities for the price.

Great location, very nice staff. The lack of air conditioning in the elevators was a drag. Our only other concern was the smell and taste of the water, not sure if this is a issue or that is the way it is. We did not have that smell when we stayed at the Holiday Inn resort on the same road. Most likely we will stay again if the water is a one time issue. Rooms very nice and food was good.

We were very pleased with our stay at Shell Island Resort. This trip was last minute - and during the July 4th weekend and less than a full week so beach house rentals were out of the question...we were happy to get anything on the beach. All rooms face the beach with a very small balcony - basically room for 2 chairs and a table. The suite consisted of a sitting room/kitchen with floor to ceiling windows facing the ocean. The kitchen consisted of a larger than mini refrig., stove top and oven, microwave, full sink, coffeemaker with dish and silverware. The bedroom faced an outside walkway to the parking ramp and had a view of the sound. Bathroom configuration was one tub-shower, toilet, sink with a connecting door to a second sink and toilet. I believe the sofa in the front room was a pull-out. The room was more than we expected, very clean and hotel style tasteful. The resort is at the northern point of the island (Wrightsville Beach) which made it quiet and provided great beach walks over the tip to look at the sound side. There is public beach access next door, so this insures a lifeguard is on duty and even on a busy weekend, there was ample beach space and no problem with noise. We had a problem with the air conditioning; however, a maintenance person was up within 5 minutes of calling the front desk and the problem was resolved. We did not use the pool - hot tup ammenities; however, pool noise and chlorine smell was not a problem. The beach is wide, sand is white and fine and surf was great. There is a restaurant with room service and an outside bar which is open in the afternoons of which we did not use. We would definately recommend this resort.

We will never return due to price we paid for the hotel and the quality of the place. Standard room with two double beds that was very outdated. Stovetop did not work, not enough chairs for the small dining table, very small rooms, outdated bathrooms that needed repair. Electricity went out twice for the whole resort and there was no back-up generators!! Noise can be heard from other rooms and lots of noise from the parking garage. The bedrooms are located at the front of the room so you hear all noise from the hallway and the parking garage. If there was 10 million worth of renovation they got ripped off!! Staff at front desk was very rude. The one and a half baths are connected to each other, not a good set up. The walls needed painting and the ceramic tile needed to be replaced. Don't let the website's pictures fool you because the rooms do not look like what they show at all!! We paid $2300 for the week and got ripped off!! Very disappointed and would never recommend this place.

Clean, great location and wonderful oceanview. Bedroom was nice size; we had two queens, also liked the fact that the suite had 1 1/2 baths. Only downer was the elevators went out (two in hotel) however, a staff memember was kind enough to escort us using the service elevator because of our bags. Planning to stay here on our next visit.

Great if you like quiet, just enjoying the beach without a lot of noise. Beautiful oceanfront view and surroundings!

Nice getaway to spend time with family and kids who were in college. It is a very quiet side of the beach. Only negative piece was they were testing fire alarms one day we were there and we weren't notified ahead of time of the testing.

This hotel was one of the best values I have had in a very long time. I was worried because I had seen some negative reviews but I believe they were all before a ten million dollar renovation of the hotel. Every room is a suite and they have nice HD Tv, Blue Ray player, small kitchen unit with pots and pans along with mini fridge. The beach is beautiful and the hotel has a nice business center along with indoor and outdoor pool (indoor pool is heated). The hotel only has one restaurant which is the biggest negative because its casual and not the greatest selection but everything else was excellent. I would now pay twice the room rate that I payed because it was really worth it and I will go back again and stay longer next time.

Very friendly staff. Nice rooms and amenities. Beautiful view. Felt very private for a hotel.
