Brookstown Inn

Great stay. Enjoyed the suite. Our daughter and her husband visited and the living room area was perfect. We enjoyed wine and cheese on the veranda. Our room had a minor maintenance issue but we were not expecting a 5 star hotel either. The bed needs different sized pillows for those that don't prefer large fully stuffed.

Cozy, Friendly, and Fun

We enjoyed being walking distance to downtown brunch and dinner locations. The staff was friendly and accommodating, and the little extras --such as evening wine and milk and cookies in the lounge were a nice touch.

Like sleeping on a cloud

The Brookstown is absolutely beautiful and full of personality. The staff is always friendly and courteous and the rooms are clean. The bathtubs on the first floor can be used as swimming pools, so if you are a tub person don't forget the bubble bath. The beds are so comfortable all you want to do is just lay on them and never leave your room - unless it's to take a bath in the over-sized tub. The breakfast is nothing to brag about, but Ollie's bakery is almost next door. 1st floor rooms are infinitely more personable than any of the others with the exposed brick and large rooms.

Sightseeing tip: In Hotel

Take time to go to the visitor's center connected to the hotel. There is lots of info and the ladies are so friendly. The courtyard connecting the two bldgs deserves an afternoon drink or snack at the provided tables.

Double - Billed

Although the travel website billed my credit card at booking, the hotel also charged my card. I do nto know whether the fault is with the travel website or the hotel, but I will have to deal with the hassle of getting the error corrected. The experience leaves me with little interest in using either the Big O travel website or the hotel again.

wonderful overnight stay

The place was immaculate. The rooms are huge with over 10 foot ceilings. It has an old country feel inside the rooms. My stay was during a time in which they served free wine and cheese and later that night free homemade cookies and milk. I was a little chilled in the rooms, but one in bed I fell hard asleep. The bathrooms could be modernized a bit. I am definitely staying again.

Quirky, pleasant spot; the opposite of cookie-cutter chains.

Converting this old mill to a hotel must have been a serious challenge. The configuration is exceedingly odd, but everything is comfortable & pleasant. The building has as much character & history as the neighborhood. Staff are friendly & accommodating.

Outstanding Old Inn

This is a quaint, historic inn in a fabulous downtown location close to Historic Old Salem and the ARts District with lots of shops and cafes nearby. The room was huge with exposed brink, old pipes, beams, and joists exposed in the cathedral ceiling. You definitely feel the history of the place. Our room had a super comfortable king bed, faux fireplace, microwave, fridge and 42 inch flat screen TV. The decor was simple, shaker-style but comfortable and appropriate for its historic nature. It was charming, romantic and wonderfully different from any typical hotel room I've ever stayed in. Unfortunately, the staff was not so great. It felt like the starting and second string staff were on vacation and the third string was just there trying to wing it. The room was not ready at the 3:00 check in and when we did finally check in, housekeeping was still at work cleaning and VACUUMING surrounding rooms near dinner time. We did enjoy sitting outside in the beautiful courtyard while we waited and caught up a bit on email/media through the inn's wi-fi. The bathrooms need updating - just new shower curtains and nice toiletries would help alot. The little sliver of soap was barely enough for one shower much less two. The toiletries looked like they might have been bought at an auction of supplies from some 1970's motel. Having said all that, I would definitely stay here again. The atmosphere and location just outweigh the negatives. And there's always the possiblilty they were just having a bad week for whatever reason. :)

Dining tip: Short drive from hotel

I would recommend the Mellow Mushroom restaurant on 4th Street. You can dine out on the sidewalk across from the Stevens Center and A/perture Theatre and the pizza and parmesan pretzels are EXCELLENT. Also for breakfast, BOC (Breakfast of Course) Restaurant on Trade Street is good although be prepared for a 45 minute wait while your meal is being prepared. It also has outside courtyard dining which we really enjoyed in the September weather.
