Nothing Special
There is nothing that would prevent me from staying in this hotel again, but it would definitely be further down on my list. The best thing about the hotel is the great views from a high level room and from the top level restaurant. Everything else needs work. The rooms were a good size and of average comfort for a cheap hotel. Old tube TV, electrical outlets were intermittent, and no WiFi to be found in the rooms. You have to connect a LAN line to use their very slow internet, but on the bright side it's completely free. Calling their room with a cheap treadmill and elliptical machine a fitness center is a bit of a stretch. If you like to get in a morning workout, plan on running outside or finding a local gym. The lobby had a nauseating smell the second day of my stay, fortunately it seemed to dissipate by the time I was leaving on the third day. The staff was helpful and courteous, and there are a couple nice bars right near the hotel. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this hotel, but if you get a good deal I wouldn't try to stop someone from staying there. It suffices for a short stay.

Super Location
Had a great getaway weekend. This property has a fantastic location with scores of nearby restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Just blocks from museums and an easy walk to the concert hall and arts center. This is a typical downtown motel with average amenities. We enjoyed the free internet and free garage parking with easy access to the elevators. If you are not expecting luxury, you'll be happy.

Dumpy, loud hotel
I stayed at this hotel as it was a part of a wedding block. I would not return. The bed was uncomfortable, the rooms were loud (you could hear any time someone open or closed a door, not to mention everyone's conversations). On a positive note, it was in a good location, easily walkable to restaurants.

Follow-up on Oct. 9 Review
I contacted the organizers of my conference and they heard back from the hotel, even if I never did. It turns out that the Raleigh-Durham Airport controls taxi prices on trips leaving the airport, but not on those arriving. So it's a free market, and naturally it's more expensive for the customer. No hanky-panky.

Some strange goings-on
The room itself was fine and clean. There were three problems: 1. The wifi in the rooms is by an overloaded cable modem. When I tried to use it in the early evening, about 2/3 of my connections timed out, and this was for reading pages, not downloading files. 2. The hotel is close to the railroad lines, and there are regular audible train whistles, even on the 11th floor and with the window closed. I like train sounds, other people might not. Related: there was a very loud party next door around midnight, but staff came up, and they were quiet afterwards. 3. I feel I might have been scammed after I checked out. All the information for my conference (and the experience of my friends) was that a cab to RDU was $30. The desk person who called a cab for me (on a Saturday around 10am) insisted it was about $45, and wouldn't you know it, the taximeter on the cab read $46.95 when I got there. I don't know if the taximeter was tricked or a poor route was taken. I do know there was no meaningful traffic.

Lacking
I traveled to Raleigh to finish some research and booked this room thinking a Clarion hotel would be ideal for a business traveler. I was disappointed. The staff was friendly, and the room was clean. I ran into problems though when I discovered that there was no mini fridge or wifi! I've stayed at much more modest hotels which at least provide those two amenities!

Noisy
We went down to Raleigh for the World Beer Festival and only wanted a hotel room as a place to sleep. Unfortunately, Clarion is not the place for that. It is unbelievably noisy. We were on the 15th floor but could still hear traffic noise clearly. We could hear people flush toilets from the rooms on either side of ours and from the room above us. We could also hear people simply walk in the room above us. We often travel to Raleigh and we will never stay there again. (On the plus side, the rooftop brunch buffet was delicious).
