Nice Condo, Bad Hotel
The "hotel" was in a good location in relation to the downtown and Duke campus area, however I can't say it was much of a hotel. The check-in desk area was closed at about 9pm when we arrived and there was a number to call to check in. Luckily somoene had already called and had been waiting 10 minutes when I arrived so a few more minutes wasn't too bad on my end at least. There was pretty much nothing hotel oriented about the place. Self serve breakfast, no one on the premise to help if needed, no shampoo in the room, no cleaning or turn down service. On a positive note, the rooms were very large with seperate living/kitchen room, bedroom and bathroom, 2 TV's, clean hotel, real nice courtyard and outdoor ambiance. I highly recommend this for a family gathering or graduation where the space will be accomodating, however as far as a hotel for a couple, this one was nothing special.

Charming, no frills, all around solid.
Duke Tower proved to be an excellent value. The staff was mostly hands off but responsive when I reached out to them. The main hotel/condo building doesn't match the elegance and beauty of the namesake tower -- preserved from a 19th century mill that used to occupy the site -- but the rooms are all (I think) condo style with a small living room and kitchen in addition to the bedroom. Just enough space to not feel cramped but by no means a traditional suite. It's obvious the hotel spends a great deal of time and money on landscaping as the grounds are impressive. They have a great pool to relax by and cool off at the end of a long hot day, as well as recreational spaces for shuffle board, life-sized chess and checkers, and a picnic/grill area that I saw several guests taking advantage of. Not only did the hotel patrons enjoy the grounds, but so did several species of birds. They regularly visited the bird feeders and filled the courtyard with their chirps and songs. I like that Duke Tower practiced several sustainability measures such as including recycling bins in the rooms and utilizing rain barrels for irrigating the lush landscape. All in all, this place is a great value. If you want a traditional hotel experience with a lobby and concierge, and luggage porter than this is not your place. On the other hand, if you want to stay at a place that's nicer than the highway off ramp chains in a convenient, relaxing location then don't hesitate the spend the little bit extra at Duke Tower.

Sightseeing tip:
Short drive from hotel
Visit Sarah P. Duke Gardens on the campus of Duke University. It's a great combination of a park and a botanical garden. Good for a stroll around the grounds or a nap under one of the many majestic magnolia trees. There is no admission fee and even parking is free during certain hours.
