Historic, European-style hotel in Uptown Charlotte since 1929

The genteel look and feel of The Dunhill Hotel has welcomed Uptown Charlotte guests for 80 years. Its 10 stories are a rare historic landmark from that period, renowned for elegant accommodations. Formal but not stuffy, the hotel teems with 18-century European furnishings and hand-sewn draperies. Cozy rooms charm with four-poster beds. Periodic restorations have kept the Dunhill a favorite for nice, quiet rooms within walking distance to downtown Charlotte attractions. Look for its flourish of neo-classical architecture amid the city skyline.

Highlights

  • Uptown boutique hotel in the heart of the arts and culture district
  • Elegant rooms, some with four-poster beds
  • Convenient to shops, businesses and nightlife, plus light rail line and free trolley
  • On-site restaurant and lounge provides 24-hour room service
  • Transportation in a London Taxi available by appointment within a two-mile radius

Location
In the heart of the arts and cultural district, Discovery Place science museum, the Mint Museum, Spirit Square Center for the Arts and Blumenthal Performing Arts Center are all within walking distance of The Dunhill Hotel. Charlotte banking and financial headquarters are conveniently close for those on business. Also nearby are the Time Warner Cable Arena, Bank of America Stadium, NASCAR Hall of Fame and Charlotte Convention Center.
Rooms
Intimate rooms reflect the bygone era of the 18th century with a writing desk, antique and classic accents and an armoire. Modern conveniences, discreetly infused into the traditional atmosphere, include flat-screen televisions with satellite channels, CD players or iPod docking stations, voicemail, free Wi-FI, refrigerators stocked with complimentary beverages, and marble bathrooms with lavish bath amenities and bathrobes. Drift off on a new pillow-top mattress with hypo-allergenic bedding after turndown service leaves signature chocolates. Wedding-night couples who reserve the lavish Penthouse Suite love photos on the balcony.
Features

Designed by architect Louis Asbury- Sr., The Dunhill Hotel opened in 1929 as the fashionable Mayfair Manor apartment hotel. With permanent wealthy tenants renting half of the original rooms, the hotel thrived even during the Great Depression. Designated a Historic Hotel of America by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, this authentic and understated retreat is a class act. It's also Charlotte's only member of Historic Hotels of America. Enjoy valet parking (fees apply), fresh coffee in the lobby and the oft-recognized adjacent Harvest Moon Grille open all day. No wonder Paul McCartney, Morgan Fairchild, Sinbad, and Tony Bennett have booked the Penthouse Suite.

Awesome location for the money!!

We needed a room uptown close to the new Amphitheater for the Shinedown concert. This was the closest that had a room available for Saturday night. We couldn't believe the location for the room cost we paid..right in the middle of everything basically. It was clean..classy...and very helpful friendly staff. We WILL stay there again.

Excellent

I was treating my husband for his 50th birthday and it was very relaxing. I expecially liked having the restraurant downstairs and the food was very good. I don't think I would take my children there as they would not appreciate the atmosphere. I love history and it has much to offer in that respect. Heavy molding, marble bathrooms, some antiques.

good and bad

The staff and room and location were first class. The reason I use hotels is because I like to sleep on a bed. It had the worst bed I have ever slept in. It was concave, so we both kept rolling to the middle. It really was brutal.

Very Nice, Great Service

I initially booked this hotel because of the convenience of the location (was attending a concert at a nearby venue). I also liked that it was a historic place that had an interesting past. Upon arrival, I was informed that their computer system had crashed earlier in the day. Subsequently, they had overbooked for the type of room I had reserved. No worries though. They upgraded my room at no cost. Later, I requested an extra blanket. It was delivered in a prompt and very courteous manner. I thought the staff was first class all the way. It was my first stay at this hotel but definitely not my last. I'm already looking forward to my next trip to Charlotte so I can stay at The Dunhill Hotel again!

Throw hotel chains in Charlotte out the door!!

It will be the ONLY hotel we stay in in Charlotte NC--First, the parking garage is adjacent to the hotel and can be accessed from it ($10/day--Entering the hotel from the main entrance sports a cute/small bar to the right with a piano (and yes, a great lady played the nite we were there)and entrance to the quaint/small dining room on the left--straight ahead and up a few steps is registration---talk about a great bunch of people--speedy and kind!!--our room was two full sz beds--upon entry our son saw the HUGE flat screen tv and grabbed the bed closest to it!!--no pictures on the walls, how great i thought because the wallpaper had that sutle shaded pattern thru it making it a wall its own muriel--the draperies were nice and the blinds were wooden shades, nice wooden shades!--the bathroom had marble flooring like the site said and the tile around the bath/shower was marble also--We threw our bags down and just stared--I don't know about anyone else but we have stayed in hotels that were more than this one and got a whole lot less--And the location?--Oh my, for us it was the best--everything was within walking distance for us--great food places, starbucks just a few doors down--expensive and non expensive restaurants--you name it, it was within walking reach and walking to the stadium was the best!!--thre is a great sports bar on the street behind the hotel--while we did not eat dinner at the hotel restaurant, we did have breakfast there and I don't know about anyone else that has stayed there but IT WAS THE BEST!!!!--when we return to Charlotte, we plan on having our dinner there--the dining room is small and cozy and just plain neat!--Does it all sound to good to be true?--Well, here were our pitfalls: One robe was in the room with three people, maybe we could have called for more, we did not attempt--the desk/table had been marred over time from drink rings and such in one area--dust had accumulated over time on the ledge of the tile on the floor--the sink drain was sluggish (but we did not report it) and our room overlooked the air conditioning units--not as noisy as I thought it was going to be--and we altered the view by fixing those great wooden blinds where they were closed on the bottom half--DO NOT let my pitfalls discourage you, this is a place worth staying in and giving it a try--I know this is the only place for us--Oh, back to the staff: I had to wonder if they were genuine (way too nice!!) but in the brief period we were there and having chats with them, we found them to be the best--They were full of conversation and a joy to be around!!

Great location

We stayed at the Dunhill for just one night - we found the location to be second to none. It was right next to Discovery Place, and an easy walk from all of uptown's locations (Bobcat arena, panthers stadium, lots of nightlife). The actual room was nice - it is a historic hotel so I would say the room was a little on the small size, and the bathroom was small as well - but certainly functional. We had a great view from our room of the skyline, but I did not find it too noisy (we were there on a Monday night). Parking was $10 a night, but you could come and go and this rate is pretty standard for a downtown lot. I would stay here again. They have complimentary beverages in the room, turn down service and chocolates - and the check out time was a very generous noon.

Not quite what we expected

The Dunhill Hotel was in a great location for exploring Charlotte, but it did not quite provide the romatic setting we were looking for in celebrating our anniversary. First of all, every time we have had someone stay there, the Dunhill has had turn-down service and chocolate-dipped strawberries in the evening. There was no sign of that, and there was no bottled water in the room, something you expect at a hotel of this price. Furthermore, they are remodeling the hotel, and the noise on Sunday morning was anything but relaxing. The restaurant is very enjoyable.

1. There are a plethora of good restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. I would recommend Blue, Luce, or Zink. 2. The Dunhill's restaurant, Monticello, is the best place for breakfast in uptown Charlotte.
