Winter West Yellowstone Hotel that Works
Pros: not crowded, awesome waterslide, free breakfast (real sitdown, not continental), and spacious rooms. Cons: Seemed to be more spendy than normal for area and breakfast tasted old if you had it late in the morning. Overall it was a positive experience.

Go to Bud Lilly's to rent snowshoes. Cheap and the owner is very helpful. Looks to be a solid fly fishing store as well.

W.Yellowstone Days Inn
Staff was very friendly and helpful. Motel was VERY closet to the west entrance to the park, and was quite convenient. The motel has an "interesting" layout, with an outer corridor between the rooms and the outside (to protect the rooms from bad weather?). The result is that the room was darker than we would like it to be - the room needs more or brighter lights. Other than that, our three night stay at this motel was fine. We'd go there again.

Pet hostile
We brought a 2 lb. puppy with us and the hotel manager screamed at me in the hallway about how they are not a pet-friendly hotel. I said that that information wasn't available anywhere during the time of the booking and had I known that, I would have spent my $300 for two rooms elsewhere. She offered me to move out or pay the fine. Because the town was booked out, we ended up staying and had to let our puppy sleep in the car. You can imagine how that impacted our two-day vacation in Yellowstone.

nice service but...
It was the best choice for the money $89/day for two queen bed room which had ample room. Hot breakfast was free with coupon at the Trappers Restaurant. Due to heavy snow we had to cancel our first night in the hotel and was given refund for that. How nice! But after that had to talk with 3 different people including a rude manager to re-book remaining 3 days.
