Okay Hotel in Power and Light District
BBQ queen Oct 26, 2009
The best thing about this hotel was the staff. [...] at the front desk was very helpful. Printed the directions to the ... Waterfire event that was taking place that night. The hotel does not deserve a four star. Although the hotel did try to update their rooms, it does not compare to the four stars hotels we have stayed at. The rooms and bathrooms were very small. No refrigerator. Overall, felt more like a three star hotel. Location is okay if you are going to Kansas City for the theater but the best place to stay if you are a tourist is probably near Country Club Plaza which has the shopping and the food.

Don't Believe the Hype - It's only so-so
SmoknBobJD May 3, 2009
I was in Kansas City for a weekend trip to celebrate a friend's wedding. I stayed at the Phillips, because of the strong ... reviews here on Orbitz; however, my experience was not great.Although many of the hotel staff were friendly, The Hotel Phillips exhibited incompetence in various areas. For example, there was a stack of DIRTY TOWELS sitting on a chair when I checked into the room. Also, my friends had left a goodie bag for me at the front desk before I checked in, and despite a clear notation on the computer (which was confirmed later), I did not receive the bag until the following day (my friends realized I had not been given it at check-in). These should be no-brainers for a hotel, but the Hotel Phillips managed to screw them up.WARNING TO SMOKERS: A Hotel Phillips staffer named [...] told me that if you book directly with the Hotel Phillips you can reserve smoking accommodations, but they are not held for Orbitz customers. The hotel has a limited (small) number of smoking rooms, and I was informed that they tend to be entirely booked by people who do not use travel agencies, but book directly with the hotel (those folks get priority). Accordingly, IF YOU ARE A SMOKER AND NEED TO STAY AT THE HOTEL PHILLIPS, DO NOT BOOK THROUGH ORBITZ OR ANY OTHER TRAVEL AGENCY.A NOTE ABOUT THE ROOMS: This is an older hotel, but the rooms are in good shape. The standard rooms (which they naturally call deluxe or premium or something) are adequately sized. Their larger room (corner upgrade from the standard) is oddly arranged, with a pull out sofa but no coffee table. (This lack of attention to detail seemed to be the theme of my stay at the Hotel Phillips). End tables were cluttered, and the provided desk was as well (it served as the place for the coffee maker) - so the missing coffee table was definitely an oversight that was noticed. Additionally, the bathroom sink has an aesthetically interesting, but functionally limited faucet system. The thing looks and functions like a pitcher spout that pours water into the basin (picture a porcelain open channel that the water flows over to enter the sink's basin). This is interesting, but if you are a man who shaves over the sink (or travel with one), you may want to take note that this faucet system quickly becomes a place where hair, shaving cream, and anything else you use collects, and once it does - all of the water you get is flowing through that debris. The sink represents form over function in an unnecessarily unsanitary way.Despite positive reviews, I found the place to be adequate at best. Its location is its greatest strength. Its weakness is - a lack of attention to the details that can make or break a stay.

For BBQ the Jack Stack at the Freight House is very good in an upscale atmosphere. If you want your socks knocked off, and a good reason to move to Kansas City, check out Oklahoma Joe's (a locals favorite - so good you can't believe you're eating in a gas station).

Upsetting
Paul Aug 31, 2008
I knew going in that this hotel had a retro feel. I thought it would be nice to take a step back in time. From the torn up ... sidewalk in front that forced you to enter through the restaurant to the 70s style bright orange vacuum sitting right in front of our room upon arrival, I was definitely not satisfied!!! The room was very small and plain. The bathroom was outdated. Considering I stayed at the Chateau Avalon (a beautiful theme hotel that I would recommend to all that would listen) for nearly the same price, this hotel was ridiculously priced for what you received. I will never stay at this hotel again, nor will I recommend it to anyone.

rooms were redone, but the old flavor of the hotel was preserved well...made the rooms smaller by modern standards, and the ... bathroom was not as luxurious. A little pricey for the location , unless you were intending a downtown destination. parking was expensive. very nostalgic, enjoyable experience , overall.

A most comfortable room
Catherine Sep 23, 2007
My first time at this hotel, and I was pleasantly surprised at the hospitality of the staff. I only stayed overnight, but was ... made to feel welcome by the staff. It was a lovely oasis in the midst of chaos outside its doors. The downtown area of K.C. is being renovated, and the streets and sidewalks are torn up. The room was a nice size, well appointed bathroom, and sumptuous linens on the bed. I did have drinks and snacks at the bar in the hotel and enjoyed an evening of jazz and good food. I'd go back!

Romantic Old Hotel
Michael Aug 12, 2007
The Hotel Phillips is a renovated older hotel with all the charm and granduer that used to be the standard. The hotel ... interior lobbies and public areas are absolutely classic. If staying here, take a walk around the back side of the hotel for all the marble, plaster, and such. The room was large and well maintained. The bathrooms in most hotels leave something to be desired, this was not the case at this hotel. The bathroom was clean, modern, and sleek. The shower had great water pressure, which is also a shortcoming of most hotels. The neighborhood is pretty safe, there aren't a lot of restaurants in walking distance, and the hotel restaurants are a little pricey. The 12 Baltimore restaurant had a good breakfast selection, including a brunch buffet. There are several dining options within a short drive to the South, such as the freighthouse district and the Country Club Plaza. The Westport area has more casual fare. Great Hotel. Good location. Great style and comfortable rooms. Weekend rates are cheaper, and it's a relaxing way to spend a couple of days. I live in KC and did a weekend get away at the Hotel. I'll be doing it again soon.

Lydia's Italy has the best food in the city. They are a little pricey but well worth it. They have a awesome Sunday Brunch. Jackstack BBQ is a KC staple (next to Lydia's). For better BBQ with less atmosphere, go to Overland Park to get ribs at Wyandotte BBQ on 75th and Metcalf. (No atmosphere, just great ribs!)

Hotel staff were very accomodating as we needed a quick check-in to make it to out to the ballpark in time for the game. ... Unfortunately I became very ill the next day and spent the entire day in bed. Staff made sure I had what I needed, and I rested quite comfortably. That night I needed something to eat and all I really wanted was a baked potato. Even though the restaurant in the hotel didn't serve baked potatoes they made one up for me. I was most appreciative. The hotel was beautiful, very comfortable, and the staff very attentive. We will return for another visit.
